Anyone want a bike? [Oct. 7th, 2008|05:00 pm]

puskunk
MY blue motorcycle is officially for sale, I've listed on all the message boards I frequent. It's a screaming deal, $3000 for a 4 yr old bike that will still outrun any car on the road.

What's cooking? [Oct. 7th, 2008|09:26 pm]

Ah, Jamie's Ministry of Food, in which TV chef Jamie Oliver's trying to get everyone in Rotherham to cook, by teaching several people different recipes, and then getting them to pass those on to 2 other people, getting those people to pass 'em on to 2 more, etc. Like a pyramid scheme of cookery.

Jamie's got some big, burly men smashing chicken fillets (with cheese and bacon) with frying pans - a move that I think is quite clever, because even I would like to repeatedly whack irresponsible bankers / repressive cultural introjects something with a frying pan lately. And then he's got 'em frying the fillets up with asparagus.

You know what is sexy?

People who can cook = sexy.
People who will cook = sexy.

Why? Read more... )

Piccie time... [Oct. 7th, 2008|01:54 pm]

abbagirl
[mood | lethargic]

Since I have accumulated a backlog of NYC pics here - some of which I already resized and uploaded, some of which are still on my camera, even! - I thought maybe I'd go ahead and finally get around to doing another piccie post...so here goes!

You like cathedrals? You got it! )

On the life-update front, a few things:

- Tomorrow I've got to return to Planned Parenthood in the Bronx for the results of my colposcopy (well, the three biopsies)...here's hoping for the best!!

- Tomorrow I also have a job interview, for the Araca Group (the theatrical management company that does "Wicked," among other shows)! Tis for an internship, and it's a spring one so not till Dec or Jan I think...also dunno yet what their "small stipend" might be, so, I dunno if it'd even be something I could really afford to do, but hey, I'm not gonna miss the opportunity to interview with Araca!! I pray that something might come of it... *fingers crossed*

- I won two tickets from Joe's Pub, for the Jill Sobule concert there this Sat night, wahoo!! :D I'd entered their contest for free tix to their various anniversary shows this weekend; I didn't win tix for the cast of "Hair" be-in show, alas, but they did say they're gonna do standby tix, hmm...anyway, at first the site said I'd won tix for the "Stew Songbook" show, with John Cameron Mitchell and Michael Cerveris among others, which was surprising cuz I thought I hadn't picked that one among my choices for entering? But it turned out JP had made a mistake and screwed up the random drawing for everyone, so they redid it, and I got Jill. Which I'm pretty happy about, cuz I love JCM and Michael, but dunno if I like the music of Stew, and I reeally wanted to see Jill again cuz it's been YEEARS since I saw/met her at the Ark (like, back in the late 90's I think?!). And I asked [info]charmedgirl along cuz I know she likes Jill too (and has never seen her live!), so yay. She's a Jill as well, lol.

- I lurve my new cable OnDemand, which has allowed me to catch up on all of Season 4 of "Weeds" (woo!), the season of "True Blood" thus far (I am officially addicted!!), and even see all of Season 1 (just 8 eps) of "The Secret Diary of a Call Girl" or whatever it's called (not as good as the book it's based on, imho, by the infamous "Belle de Jour"). Next on my agenda will be Season 2 of "The Tudors," yaay!! Maybe one of these days I can even finally check out "Californication" or "Dexter" for the first time...oddly, however, they don't seem to have any "L Word" reruns on Showtime OnDemand, wtf?? (Or "Big Love" on HBO OnDemand?)

- I am finally, officially, in the NYC voter registration database, and got my confirmation in the mail and everything. I cannot WAIT to get my first chance to vote for Obama (since he wasn't on the ticket in the MI primaries) next month!! I have Obama and Obama/Biden stickers all over my room right now; I'd have a lawn sign up somewhere if only I had a place for one...gonna watch the debate tonight, although I dunno if it'll be quite as fun without Caribou Barbie bringing the crazy...I missed the first Obama/McCain debate, alas! (Not sure if I even had TV then?)

ETA: Oh, and re: my previous entry? I ended up going to the second of the two readings on Fri night, at Bluestockings, and also ended up fainting in the middle of it (and hitting my forehead, between the eyes, on a bookshelf as I went down. :( I still have a small bruise/bump), ughh, so embarrassing!! I prolly shoulda gone to the kundalini one, lol...oh well. Now I'm gonna feel like a dork going to Bluestockings again, just like I did going to Shaman Drum after having fainted (and also hit my head!) during their Fast Food Nation reading...

Halloween costume countdown, day 7 [Oct. 7th, 2008|01:47 pm]

All right, if you're a little bored of TV characters, I can't say as I blame you, so am I. Let's move on to movie characters. We'll start with the ultimate classic: STAR WARS.

You could be Yoda!
Photobucket

Or Darth Vader!
Photobucket

Or...some guy who attacks a droid with a breadstick?

Photobucket

Or an Ewok!

Photobucket

Or a Stormtrooper!

Photobucket

Or a chipmunk!

(I think George Lucas is starting to slip, honestly.)

Or you can just be a nerd:

Your tax dollars at work. [Oct. 7th, 2008|06:46 pm]

Executives at bailed-out AIG stayed at $500 a night Californian resort. A week earlier the Federal Reserve had to extend a huge credit line to AIG to keep the troubled firm from collapsing.

The world's largest insurance company, AIG, spent $440,000 (£250,000) on a lavish corporate retreat at one of California's top beachside resorts just a week after accepting an $85bn emergency loan from the US government to stave off bankruptcy.

Details of the getaway emerged at a congressional hearing today where lawmakers expressed outrage at AIG executives "wining and dining" at the height of a financial crisis.

An invoice from the St Regis resort in Monarch Beach, south of Los Angeles, shows that AIG spent $139,375 on rooms, $147,301 on "banquets", $23,380 on spa treatments and $6,939 on golf at an eight-day company event which began on September 22.

A week earlier, on September 17, the Federal Reserve had to extend a huge credit line to AIG to keep the troubled firm from collapsing due to vast liabilities on risky financial insurance policies.

Tomorrow off then to work again for two days, must finish home mork for thursday which is easy.
Nice to settle back into normal life, or as normal as my life gets.

Best to you all.

I went for my first run in Seattle since the move; 87 minutes of exploring the neighborhood. Given how hilly it is here I can see why some of the best ultrarunners are from San Francisco and Seattle. There's really nothing flat in this neighborhood -- even 28th St which is along a ridge line is gentle up then gentle down.

Returned box actually managed to return! [Oct. 7th, 2008|12:20 pm]

kass_rants
Some of you may remember that I had a wholesale customer who wanted a refund on a shipment I sent her in the beginning of April. Remember how it went to her old address (because she didn't tell me her new address) and, even though the postman and the realtor called and left messages that she had a package, she did not pick it up. I mailed it on the 10th of April, it arrived at her old address on 16 April, and it was reported unclaimed on 13 May. Supposedly it was being returned to me, but by mid-August, I still hadn't seen it.

My customer had been complaining that she was going to report me to the FBI *snort* if I didn't refund her payment. But I told her that I had no package so there could be no refund until I did.

Well, this morning the postman brought a box to my door, announcing that it had returned from a far away land. Surprising, no? I guess those little buggers walked it here!

It was a little beaten up (I would be too if I spend May through October in transit!), but none of the contents were damaged. So I decided that I could now refund my customer's payment.

Around 10am I got on PayPal and refunded the cost of the patterns to the customer.

Let's see what happens now.
