LOL ART is a new series of work based on internet memes, phenomena, and e-celebrities - started by Amber Walden. The goals of this project are:
a.) to investigate the new phenomena of internet memes
b.) to see how the average art viewer, who is not familiar with these memes, reacts to the imagery, jokes and ideas presented in the memes
c.) to explore the idea of the internet being the new portal for the art world
All of this may sound pretentious and lame, but the overall, real goal here is just to have fun with this art form, since that's what most memes were originally intended for, amirite?
In this community, I will post my own LOL ART, as well as invite other artists on LiveJournal to contribute their own LOL ART. So what exactly is LOL ART???
Internet memes, phenomena and e-celebs presented in traditional art or craft forms, such as painting, sculptures, craft-work, and any other media that would be considered for a traditional gallery art show. But instead of presenting these works in a gallery, the idea is to spread them back through in the internet in its new form, through image macros, icons or any other form of web-transmission; thus creating new meme out of old meme. =]
Along with submissions artists come up with on their own, themes and contests will be held, where either a specific meme is presented that artists should translate into their own form of LOL ART, or a specific media is requested, and the artist may choose whatever meme he or she wants to translate.
