| About: | After reading Barbara Kingsolver's latest book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, I decided to be more mindful of my consumer habits. Toward that end, I decided to attempt to find 75% of whatever I need from local sources. That means food, toiletries, sundries...everything. Perhaps later, my goal might increase to another percentage, but I thought it best to start with a number I felt I could achieve. I am self-aware enough to know that there are a few things that I can't get locally and I can't quite give up, i.e. limes and green olives. In this day and age of gas prices climbing to the $4.00 mark, any way that I can reduce my consumption of carbon fuels is important to me. Also, supporting my community while improving my health...well, who could argue with either of those things? I am located in Durham, NC but I named this community locavore_world because I want all the members to share their locavore efforts, no matter where they are located. The local produce is going to be very different from region to region, country to country, and we can all learn from each other. So join this group if you are interested in reducing your carbon footprint, if you are interested in eating healthier, tastier foods, if you want to support your local businesses with your hard-earned money.
