artichoke dip [Aug. 29th, 2008|10:49 pm]

by request of [info]litebrite3e8, recipe (as far as i remember it) for the spinach artichoke dip i brought to the event tonight:

- 2 cans artichoke hearts (in water)
- 1 bag fresh spinach
- 1 head garlic (yes, i used an entire head)
- 1 packet (1/2 lb?) cream cheese
- 1 lemon's worth of lemon juice
- generous amounts of grated romano (or parmesan) and mozarella
- a few spoonfuls of sour cream
- butter

chop garlic coarsely; saute in butter. add spinach gradually and saute that too (it cooks down a lot). meanwhile, drain and coarsely chop the artichoke hearts (roughly into quarters).

toss the cooked spinach and garlic into a baking dish (or mixing bowl, to be later transfered into a dish); stir in cream cheese and other cheeses (leaving aside some mozarella). add lemon juice and sour cream to taste. add some more cheese when you realize you haven't added enough.

top with a layer of mozarella and bake at 350°F for half and hour.

could probably benefit from fresh cracked pepper, which i meant to add but forgot. and whatever other spices you feel like adding.

serve with whatever things or people you enjoy dipping into hot creamy artichoke goo.

Movie: "In Bruges". Kind of a much less good movie than I thought it was going to be, but I find it hard to actually be disappointed, not least because AB screwed up the sound and gave us all a refund. Not exactly clear to me why it got such fantastic reviews. The characters were interesting and the dialogue had a couple of good moments, but mostly it seemed unnecessarily gory, poorly paced, and full of racist jokes that didn't exactly even make sense.

yesterday there were some sweet graphics/vision and robot talks. i find that those are the only exciting oic talks except for the ones in my field. :P

apparently we flattered the dead-tree-comic gods, because my "full color odds-and-ends" of scott pilgrim arrived, and it is fantastic. also, thanks for all of the suggestions.

went climbing and discovered an enormous mass of cmu people there; had a pretty good time. stayed for quite awhile. green mango was closed when we got out, so we went to harris grill. they make ravioli there that is covered in CURRY SAUCE. best idea ever.

capo 5, kind of bouncy and syncopated, the beat really comes on the second (sixth, tenth, etc.) note rather than the first (fifth, ninth, etc.) so that the high notes sound anticipatory.

given my ever-deepening affection for scott pilgrim (for which i have [info]relaxatorium to thank), i have occasionally thought to myself, "i should find more things like this". you know, comics of the non-web variety. the problem is, i don't really know where to start. i go into comic book stores, pick things up in the indie graphic novel section, flip through them, but never become convinced enough to buy them. so, internets: recommendations? what are your favorites?

a few notes: i know i should read sandman, so don't tell me that. in general, i prefer non-superhero comics. i'm looking more for things with continuity (graphic novels) rather than collections of syndicated strips. i like supporting indie comic artists.

I just found some guy's deviantART gallery of photos he takes of bizarre small creatures. It is pretty much my favorite gallery ever. I'm not just referring to galleries on the internet; I'm having trouble thinking of a museum I like anywhere near as much as this. Aquariums come pretty close, actually, but this guy's camera captures bugs and other small creatures with much higher fidelity than the naked eye possibly could. Aquariums just can't compete with that.

Here are some of my favorite insects in the gallery. Make sure to click on the image to zoom in.
6 Mantid Faces
Looks like Dracula
Looks like Bambi to me
This photo is titled "Shinigami"
Clearly a warrior
Also a warrior
I like the color on this one
Long and thin

He's got plenty of stuff that's not insects. He's even got some photos of people. Check it out, it's really a fantastic gallery.

Ryan's moved out of his room; I started moving my things in so that [info]gwillen can occupy an actual room instead of sleeping on the futon.

Fixed a bug where not even the simple types of terms were agreeing in HLF type inference; now it's down to fiddly deBruijn problems. It's extremely irritating that I have one view of the system which has only world variables, and another view from which I have term and world variables interleaved, and I keep mixing them up.

Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl... [Aug. 26th, 2008|02:44 am]

[music |The Beatles - Her Majesty]

Happy birthday Clee! I hope it's a good one, in all the brightest shades of green and yellow.

There are 6 kittens living under our hot tub building here at home, and they are ADORABLE. And young; their eyes are still the most georgous type of blue. The mother either abandonded them or got hit by a car or something, because we haven't seen her in at least a week, and they were hungry when we took them milk and kitten chow. Three of the six have warmed up to us, but the other three are still terrified and are only now starting to come entirely out of the hole when one of us big tall scary things are around, and even then they come no where near us and are extremely skittish. But we have hope. The runt is a tiny little grey tigerstriped thing, and she is fearless. She climbs all over me when I'm sitting on the ground, and explores everything. There's also a little girl who looks somewhat like my current cat, and a little grey and white boy. (We think. They're still so small that we're not 100% sure on the genders.) Two of the shy ones are twins, so much so that we didn't realize there were six instead of five of them until today. The other shy one is black and white, and has a scratch or something under its right eye. We were rather worried about it, as it looked pretty sickly at first, but it appears to be healing now that it's getting some nutrition. I will post pictures as soon as I get Mom to email them to me.

So, if anyone who lives near me needs a kitten, or knows someone trustworthy who does, please let me know. I love them all dearly but there's no way we can keep any of them.

A 16-year-old Qatari boy died in England yesterday after what appears to be an unprovoked, racially motivated attack by a local gang.

Mohammed Al Majed was five weeks into a six-week summer exchange program to work on his English and study British culture when he and his friends were attacked while leaving a kebab house in Hastings.

I've been trying to come up with a comment to make, but I'm at a loss.

Article from the Daily Mail, which is more forthcoming than the BBC.

As a cultural/language note, the title of this post is a verse from Qur'an frequently recited when Muslims receive news of a death; it means something like "Indeed we are God's, and we are returning to him." It's pronounced Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.

Wrestling with type inference still. Found some motivating examples for my alternate unification algorithm; though it looks like it may not be enough.

New job title [Aug. 24th, 2008|09:56 pm]

As the director of a university tutoring center I get assigned lots of interesting tasks: hiring and training dozens of course assistants and peer tutors each semester, working with faculty to develop new methods of supporting courses, researching predictors of student success, presenting at conferences in exciting locations.... But today was the first day my job also involved playing rat-catcher.

Ever since we moved into the new building there's been a tiny beige mouse-like thing running (and more often hopping) around the ARC. Today one of my coworkers cornered it, but it escaped from the container she trapped it in. Luckily, I have many years' experience corralling pet rats, so I led an effort to coax it into a trash can.

It was an awfully cute little thing, like a little kangaroo rat, with enormous back legs and front legs so small they're barely visible. My coworker says it's a jerboa (although it doesn't have a tufted tail?). I desperately wanted to keep it, but I know taming wild rodents isn't very smart, so I released it outside.

This is not a very large trash can; the jerboa is tiny!A coworker put this on my door after the escapade.

For additional rodent yumminess, click here for a video of me squeeing over the mouse while my coworker tries to feed it an oatmeal cookie. (It did eventually calm down enough to eat some.)

Where to put the workers? [Aug. 24th, 2008|09:54 am]

qatar
[Tags|, ]

According to today's Pensinsula headline -- Housewives quiver as blue-collar workforce pitches tents in al Wakra -- local women are reporting they are unable to leave the house because there are poor people out there. Oh noes!

In all seriousness, the burgeoning migrant labor population is a big issue. Yesterday's Peninsula rather astonishingly reported that Qatar had 18% population growth in the first half of this year, which would represent an influx of nearly a quarter million workers in the course of six months. How do you accommodate a quarter million new people? Either you cram even more of them into already-crowded labor camps, or you expand worker accomodations into other areas, like the unlucky one in Al Wakra. Or both.

Then, of course, there's the question of what to do with your million-plus migrant laborers during their day off. It turns out that after you ban them from the normal gathering places, other, less reputable gathering places spring up.

Relatedly, CMU is holding a small conference on issues of migrant labor, so I'll be spending part of my week at that. On Tuesday, our undergraduate research project will be presenting some preliminary findings from our survey of low-paid laborers. Exciting times!

Movie: "Man on Wire", about this dude who along with several friends sneaked into the WTC in the mid '70s just after they were built, ran a 450lb cable between the two towers, and walked across it several times. Pretty amazing story, and a decent documentary of it.

Processing is cute. Made this thing:

Keys 0-9 affect the neighbor-relation between the boxes. Mouse clicks change the region that is "heated". Other keys "shake the etch-a-sketch" a little bit.
