Banned Interest Terms
I'm told this is done by "substring search"--so certain root words are blocked, and every derivative that includes them. There are two categories: blocked words, and blocked combinations. If you search for one of the blocked terms, you get a message that says:
Errorinstead of the the normal list of comms & journals, or note that nobody has this interest, but you could start a comm with it or add it to your journal.
Sorry, we're unable to help you find users matching the interests you've provided.
The combinations seem to attempt to address child/incest sexuality issues; the others seem selected to address racism and certain WWII issues.
The intent: Block the objectionable terms, and new interests people make that attach the objectionable terms to a new word.
The result: Hundreds of innocuous interests are blocked from search.
Among the blocked terms are:
crackerjacks, doo-wop music, hospices, baby grapes, Rollercoaster Tycoon, wharfage, suspicions, unisex baby clothes, beaneries, despicable liars, pedagogics, pachinko games, spice girls, gobbledegook.
Intentionally blocked are:
child rape, sex with little girls, kiddie porn, niggers, kikes, god hates fags, gook killers, ragheads, fucking your mother, heil hitler, stupid gooks, kkk.
I'm sure you immediately see how List B causes List A, right? Me neither. Had to do a lot of searching to sort out the connections.
Minor detail: Interests on LJ can include up to 4 words (i.e. 3 spaces), but any number of underlines; they can be a maximum of 50 characters.
Save the Children: These filters operate as an "if A & B" function, where A is "child, underage, kid..." and B is "porn, sex, rape, pervert...". This renders interests such as alsdksexijsodfchildsa unsearchable.

Because of this set, the following terms are unsearchable:
asexual motherhood, baby grapes, baby skinks, baby talcum powder, children's choral music, circumcising little boys, draper family, ecumenical schools, family of coral, family morals, family morality, jaunty drapes, moral brotherhood, porgy's grandma, scumbag dads, spanking in schools, stripping the gauntlet, sussex county virginia, unisex baby clothes, young grapefruit, young mayoral candidates.
This means "prepubescent sexuality" is blocked, even to academic students; so is "baby sextuplets" and "erotic mothers" and "torture my sister." And since it's done by stemming, it blocks all variants on these terms. "Bad Motherfuckers" is blocked. So is "Snakes Onna Motherfucking Plane."
YSexy mothers, virgin aunt, transexual kids, young riddick fans, sister-city skyscrapers. (Not that I expect any of these are common terms.)
It also blocks the "anti" versions... anti child porn, anti child molestation, anti brother-sister rape--all unsearchable.
However, there are some substantially similar terms that are not blocked.

This means it's perfectly possible to search for "raping babies," even though "baby rape" is blocked. And "child killing" and "mama fucking" and "kiddie pr0n" are still usable terms. And the "1337" spellings are all still available (although as far as I can tell, currently unused)... ch1ld pr0n is searchable. So is badwrongdirtydaddy!pr0n.
And, as someone noticed, gender-neutral incest is okay: parentfucking is searchable; daddyfucking is not.
Suggestions of new entertaining blocked terms are welcomed. Depraved unblocked terms also welcome, but don't go overboard... it's always been possible to search for "naked baby mutilation," and it remains possible, and it remains a less-than-trendy interest.
No Bigots Allowed: These terms are often associated with hate crimes. And they're all single terms with stemming blocked; this includes racist and, umm, "orientationist" (?) terms.

Note that some of these are everyday words on their own and, because of word stemming, many innocuous terms are unsearchable:
COON: tycoon, raccoon, butterfly cocoons, coon hound, coonskin hat.
CRACKER: Cracker barrel, cracker jacks, crackerjacks, cheese and crackers, saltine crackers, wisecracker, firecracker, christmas crackers. "Baby crackers" is doubly blocked.
DAGO: Pedagog, solidago, dagoba
SPIC: Spicy food. Spice girls. Perspicacity. Aspic. Allspice. Jeff Spicoli. Hospice workers. Despicable, auspices, conspicuous, suspicions, sugar and spice.
FAG: Fagin, fagus, fagioli, leafage, wharfage (and this is assuming "fag hag" is not an "innocuous" term; "anti fag bashing" is also blocked.)
WOP: Doo-wop music, swop meet, twopence

Godwin's Killfile: While some of these are also associated with racism, they're more commonly associated with the ideals of the Nazi party in WWII. Some of these are not "epithets" or insults, but groups or ideals.

This means "Armenian genocide" and "genocide awareness" and "anti-genocide" are all blocked.

And now I'm... tired, and my kids are bugging me, and I think it's more important to post this than to make witty and insightful commentary. Someone who understands the politics better can explain those, and find more of the unblocked WWII etc. terms.
