Statement of Purpose
Welcome to [info]ljspeaks!

Recently, I've been reading comment after comment, post after post about how people are unhappy with the direction LJ has been taking. Things are changing in ways nobody wants, and no-one from management seems to be listening. We have promises that they'll listen, soon... but we've heard that before. We need a place to speak, and feel like we're being heard.

And here it is.

Up until now, expressing our concerns has been limited to random statements or posting haphazard links to a variety of personal journals. Each clearly states issues that all users feel, but they're all posted in different places. There is nowhere to bring it all together. Instead of thousands of users saying the same thing differently, we can all direct LJ to the same post, in one place: here.

I created this community so that users could come together to state and discuss these issues calmly. Not to say the angered mob of [info]news comments doesn't get anything done, but it only goes as far as getting their attention. When we happen to get the ear of LJ, we need to point them somewhere, to the problems we want addressed.

Also, since LJ has started spreading their information over a number of communities, I felt people might want a place where they could bring it all together. Too often, there has been information given by LJ staff members hidden deep in a 200 comment thread. These are things users need to know, and yet few will ever read. But if just one user catches that, and posts it here, that can change.

Remember, though: diplomacy is key. There are to be no attacks made in this community; leave that behind in the [info]news comment threads. This community is to be civil and informative, to both its members and the LJ staff which I hope will come to read these posts. If we rant and rave, we get written off as irrational. But if we clearly state our issues, politely and forcefully... we cannot be ignored.

For Our LiveJournal!

I like the idea of this community. Thanks for making it. :)

People may also be interested in [info]no_lj_ads, which used to be a community for campaigning against ads, but has evolved over time to become more of a community like this one - a calm community for discussing these things. LJ staff can be seen commenting in its threads. I think its main focus is still ads, though, so having another community is by no means a bad thing. :D

is what I was going to say.

@ [info]imaria, the success of that comm, with the high level of staff involvement, is in no small part due to the very strict mod policy that [info]foxfirefey enforces, and it's a good model to follow.

For the most part, staff and volunteers are happy to be involved with feedback comms, but if all they get is abuse they'll go away again, and unfortunately we've seen that too many people with a legit point can't seem to make it without either being abusive or bringing it up again and again and again in completely OT threads.

I'm glad this is here.

Umm... I hope that if I do stuff that counts as "attacks," someone will warn me rather than just throwing me out. I'm prone to skirting the edge of what's acceptable in "no personal attacks" communities. I don't mind backing down, but I like knowing exactly where the line is.

However, I'm not prone to getting outraged and spewing off a pile of insults; I do tend to keep it to the subject rather than the person. But I'm really good at goading people by making subtle implications in my comments, and I'm aware that I do it. (And I don't intend to stop. It's a very effective debate tactic, and one that occasionally brings up aspects that more gentle methods would never reach.)

I have no idea if you've seen any of my debates before the recent stuff, so I don't know how controversial my approach would be.

I've joined. I've seen lj go downhill over the last three years, and the recent developments relating to censorship are astounding me. I'm glad that there's a place we can discuss this sensibly.

We need an animated version of your icon. Same logo, but in one frame it would say 'our journal' (the icon you have now), and in the next it was say 'our voice'.

Like elfwreck, I'll try to remain diplomatic, but as I tend to be extremely blunt...some folk find that a bit more than they can handle. But yes, I do understand being asked to back down.

I can do that! I'll comment back here when it's done, and I'll stick it on the community and info page.

Just remember, we're trying to convince people that have shown they are fully capable of ignoring us. So we have to be pretty bloody convincing, and you have to be diplomatic for that ;]

Oh, I can be extremely diplomatic, but folk tend to get very upset when you tell them things they really don't want to hear.

And thank you for the icon. I shall add it to my set (with cred) as soon as you put it up.

I'd like to invite you on to [info]talk_show to help publicize this community and to discuss the topics and situations that inspired all of this. I ha invited members of [info]theljstaff to do the same, but they have, unsurprisingly, ignored me. I hope you will consider chatting with me about this. Thanks!

Thanks for all the LJ'ers who formed this community.

I just joined, and am interested to find out what may follow.

I don't want to leave Lj, I am comfortable here, and enjoy it. I hope the LJstaff also take a look here, and listen, learn, and hopefully act/react in a positive way.

I learned about this community from [info]no_lj_ads, and while I'm mostly a lurker and you'll probably never hear from me, I really like reading the discussions and POVs of the various people here. So consider me joined and keep up the good work!

You may want to implement moderation for new entries to this community, to avoid the problem of people posting stuff that's not appropriate in the first place.

+1. Seriously. If you want this community to be as good as [info]no_lj_ads and similar, this is pretty much necessary.
