7 Weeks Update - My not so new newborn.

  • Dec. 18th, 2009 at 3:52 AM
My baby smiles!
Seven weeks isn't typically a long period of time.

In fact, more often than not, it passes in a wink of an eye.

And, thus, in this timeframe, my lil gal has moved on from being the sleepy doe eyed bub to one that is rather curious about her surroundings.

Her lil munkee friend

She doesn't like to be left alone. Usually I leave her on the bed or her cot whilst I try to do some stuff around the house. After 10 minutes or so, I would hear a pitiful sounding cry coming from where I left her.

Jakey doing the milk shift

She loves nothing more than being cuddled by anyone. When we are out for a meal, she will make small noises pleading to be released from her prison of a pram and be carried to the dinner table. And then when she's carried out, she will just perk her eyes open and check out the environment. =)

Cheeks overhang

At this point, she sleeps in till about mid day and then wakes up crying for a feed. Mostly, she has her last big feed at 3 in the morn and then sneaks in a few lil feeds in between.

Yes. I am my daughter's 24 hour portable snack bar. =)

The thing I love most about her is how cheeky she can be. She loves it when people talk to her in a singsong tune. And if she likes it enough, she will break out into a lil cheeky grin.

Sleeping on the swing. *best invention ever!*

Lately, she has been cutting down on her sleeping time and catching up on everything that she is missing on this world. Her favorite position is when we hold her upright and then turning her lil head around to check out the surroundings.

She's also realised who's her mommy. When I am out of her sight, she would make lil noises to see if I'd respond. And if I am busy doing other things, she will then use her lil complaining tone to let me know that she is not happy. Too cute, I'd say!

Mommy thinks I look like Kayden Kor Kor

She's now trying to do a lil flip so we're keeping our eyes out for that to happen soon!

Seven weeks has gone too soon, hunni. Dun grow up too quickly! Mommy loves cuddling you heaps!

ecstacy...

  • Dec. 17th, 2009 at 3:28 PM
comes in the form of many things. For me it is waking this morning and realising Marissa slept through the night...for the ENTIRE MONTH!

Maybe it was all those long talks with her, telling her to feel free to sleep through the night, and that Mummy might throw herself under a bus if she didn't consider it soon. Whatever did the trick, I am ecstatic. I’m not the sort of mum who says, "I’m exhausted, my baby can go wake up with someone else today."

For the first time in a long time, I feel chirpy on rising. She is, settling quickly now at bedtime. Baby steps I guess. If she doesn’t I will get her sleeping through by Christmas even if it kills me! I don't want to be traipsing about the house at 2am. At least I know she can do it now.

Are you listening, Marissa?? You’re 8 months old! Isn’t it about time??

We’re moving

In the midst of the madness that is Christmas, and then a week later, the start of a new school year, the Augustins are moving house.

I am freaking out.

I alternate between “aiyah just let the movers come and pack everything lah” to “gosh we can save so much if we pack ourselves” and “why do we have so much clutter?? throwthrowthrow!!”

So no open house this time, not til Chinese New Year.

I think I need to get a cage "P

I am contemplating getting a play yard for Ashley and hopefully I can put her in there for have some peace for a while! "P Then again, I know this thing is not gonna be useful after a few more months.... :( Anyone knows where I can rent it instead?

Photobucket

She's definitely more active now and it's getting harder to keep her in the Bumbi chair for long.
Photobucket
10 mins at the max and she must be closely supervised as she has the tendency of throwing herself backwards and sideways when she's bored and trys to wriggle out of this thing.

Photobucket Photobucket
She sits on the walker too and can now ramped into furniture and anyone who's on the way. Beware!

She can hold herself up quite well now but, can only crawl backwards. I think she needs more space to exercise and be more mobile. ")
Photobucket
Not very happy when she's wedged in a position like this.

Photobucket
I have to be extra vigilant when I put her on my bed as she can roll pretty fast! Due to her roundness (I suppose), she cannot sit very still too. Like a roly-poly, she will lean to one side, slide and land herself in some awkward position.

Photobucket
Not just gadgets and toys, baby also outgrows their clothes very fast. This is Ashley's second swimsuit and already, I need to pass it down. "P

Love in a Torn Land

  • Dec. 15th, 2009 at 11:37 PM
I read this book, Love in a Torn Land during our recent Phuket holiday. It offers a glimpse of life in Iraq, particularly life of the Kurds in Iraq, during Saddam regime. Before I began this book, I did not know what a Kurd was nor the country Kurdistan. The book shares Joanna al-Askari's life experience growing up in Bagdad which includes fear of bombs, night time raids, smuggling a brother out of the country, imprisoned family members, and interrogations. The Kurds received especially harsh treatment at the hands of the Iraqi government.

Photobucket

During one of the massacress, the Iraqi soldiers actually round up Kurdish young men in one of the villages and marched them up to the highest point of a hill. The innocent men were then given shovels to dig trenches for themselves. After the holes were dug, the men were ordered to step into the holes and more earth were shoveled over them till they were buried up to their chin. On display for the rest of the Kurdish villagers was rows of squirming human heads above the ground. After a while, a military tank was brought up the hill and drove over those heads! I don't even want to imagine the grisly scene. Such cruelty is really inhuman!

Joanna grew up and married a 'peshmerga', a freedom fighter and led a hard life living in the harsh mountainside dodging bombs and chemical attacks. She lived through Saddam's holocaust of 200 000 Kurds during 1987/88 by poison gas, and the special role played by chemical warfare mastermind Chemical Ali.

As someone who loves reading about different cultures, this book provided an abridged history lesson while also being pretty entertaining at the same time.

if i had my way...

I'd own a bookshop cafe that looked like this.

Toys lining up the bookshelves that carried childrens' books. Colourful paperbacks and hardcovers.

A book cafe where people could sit, eat and read for hours on end. I'd serve pies, colourful muffins and loads of food that warm the soul. It would be a place where my girls could help out and hang out after school. The store would carry beautiful stationery and notepads. The place would be quaint, cozy and inviting, I'd burn a lavender scent with friendly art pieces hanging off the walls.

I enjoy leading a small life. Small but significant and meaningful to me.

Enough daydreamimg for today. I've to get down to Cold Storage to order my Christmas ham. Heaps of errands to run this week.

First Foods

BabyK turned 4 months a week or so ago and has started on her first foods. On her first try, she tried to feed herself, grabbing the spoon with a very firm grip.

Even now, she still does. not quite the neatest eater, but it is a start. She spends half her mealtime in her bumbo before she gets bored and wants out. Hence the second half of the meal sees her seated on my lap, eating away. Well, her version of it anyway.

conversation of the week

  • Dec. 11th, 2009 at 10:06 AM
Andrea has learnt how to use a telephone. Dramatic music please! This means getting to my mobile and office number by speed dial. She calls me five times in the office on a work day.

Mummy, what are you doing?
Mummy, Marissa’s eating cereal.
Mummy, why you call me huh. I’m busy ok.
Mummy, I love you. Come home now.
Mummy, I love you. Buy me a lollipop.
Mummy, Marissa’s naked.
Mummy, I’m naked.

To which I reply, “Is there bathing involved? Is it bathtime?”
“Yes.”
“Well, carry on the nakedness then.”

I’m so glad I’m on leave from next week till next year. Then I can have this conversation with my child face to face. Preferably clothed.

I love this photo of my girls. Marissa looks like she's complaining about something. Check out the finger pointing!

The school is OOS at the moment.

**Update** I called the school to check again, and they told me they have one copy hiding in the shelf, so have reserved the new edition and CD for me :)

gingersnaps

  • Dec. 9th, 2009 at 3:07 PM

Last evening, I took my girls to Gingersnaps at Raffles City to buy their Christmas dresses. Andrea now wants to wear everything that Marissa wears. She insisted for a good half hour that she wants the exact same dress as her sister for Christmas. I don’t really like to clothe my girls in similar dresses, I want them to have their own identity but who am I to begrudge my child of that?

Gingersnaps carry clothes for children that are comfortable and made of very soft fabric, I'm very particular about this because I remember having to wear organza lined dresses during festive seasons and I hated it! The last thing I want is for my girls to be scratching like monkeys at Christmas.

This was what I settled for.

Blue-purple eyelet dress with pleating at the front for both my girls.

And now I will show you what a vainpot my older one is when faced with a mirror.

Marissa's such a bundle to cuddle! If you're not into Christmas, you should really avoid my blog for the whole month of December. I catch some sort of Christmas sickness. I'm pretty much high on life for the whole month of December. What can I say? Tis' the season to be jolly. Just 2 more weeks to Christmas!

Marina Barrage

  • Dec. 9th, 2009 at 12:01 PM
We went to Marina Barrage last weekend and it was our first time there though Ethan had been there on a school excursion.
The weather was wonderful - cloudy and cool.
We were there early and there were only a handful of people flying kites.

The kids enjoyed the water playground the most.
Ethan and Trisha got their clothes all wet. Only Ewan managed to keep himself dry :D
Ethan was able to bear with his wet clothes but Trisha kept on complaining about it. In the end, we bought her a dress at a nearby mall.

Swimming Joke

  • Dec. 9th, 2009 at 11:35 AM
Ethan got 'promoted' to swim with other children who are training for competion.
On the first session, he was pushed to his limits and almost collapsed afterwards.
I kept count and he swam about 15 laps breaststroke, freestyle and butterfly.
He's not very good at butterfly style and being exhausted didn't help.
He was whining about not wanting to swim laps again BUT we managed to convince him to stay on :)
I noticed that while swimming freestyle, he would take breaths on different sides and so I told him......

Me: You have to chose which side you want to breathe when swimming the freestyle.
Him: I can't cos my brain gets into a mess when I jump into the water and I can't tell left from right!

Hahaha...
