7:10 pm - Hello again!
|

|
Hello, it's me again.
I'm actually pretty sold, now, on either Queen's University at Belfast or Trinity.
I'm actually liking Belfast a little bit more.
I was wondering if anyone here (since I can't find any communities that specialize in Belfast) can give me the run down about what Queen's is like. As in, you know--how the students act, the quality of the education, and maybe even info on the quality of the English/ Creative Writing department.
I'm also really, really interested if anyone has lived in Belfast and what it is like.
Any advice would be totally appreciated!

6:18 pm - Deciding
|

zaichev
|
Hey everyone... I was referred here awhile back.
I plan on studying abroad in Ireland my junior year. (I'm currently going in as a sophomore.) My study abroad office is just about the most unhelpful place ever. I've located three universities that meet my needs--have both a literature and creative writing program. Deciding between them is now the difficult part.
I was wondering if people here, with experience with any of these colleges, could post their opinions.
I'm considering: Galway, Trinity (at Dublin), and University College-Dublin.
I'm more than aware that both Trinity and University College-Dublin are very selective. Does anyone have a perspective on how selective, and if I have a chance? I'm posting my resume under a cut, if it helps any. I know it looks REALLY arrogant, but I'm seriously, well, not. I'm not sure yet how they select people out of a pool of applicants, but something tells me they look at more than your college GPA/classes taken.
Also, as a final note, in Ireland about how many modules do people take during one semester? When I was considering Wales way back, one could only take two! I really, really would like to continue German or French while over there.
Anyway, thanks in advance!
[edit] One last thing--I guess, do any of these cities have a Jewish population? I can totally look that up, if no one knows.

Hey guys - this FYI goes out to anyone in Dublin or the surrounding area. If any of you have been keeping up with the events unfolding in Iran - the election fraud, the demonstrations, and the firestorm of violence - there is a protest planned: Thursday 18th June, 2pm-4pm, outside the Iranian embassy, 72 Mount Merrion Ave.
Please come if you can, and please get the word out regardless. Ireland is not as wired a country as we'd like to believe we are, so this really needs your help. If you're not in Dublin, but know people who are - or have Dubliners on your flist, as friends on Facebook, Bebo, Myspace, Twitter, wherever - please let them know that this is happening.
And if you haven't been following what's going down in Iran? You should be.
From the Twitter of an Iranian medical student in Tehran:

( i am holding her little dress )
(This twitterer's username has been purposefully redacted. As the violence worsens, Iran is under a near-total communications blackout, and reports have come in that a number of 'dissident' twitterers in Iran have already been arrested.)
For more information - including a detailed timeline, dedicated liveblogging, what limited mainstream coverage there is, photos, testimonies, and more - follow the wealth of links here.
Read up; spread the word; wear green. I'll see you tomorrow.

Hi guys,
I'm desperately trying to remember the name of a little shop/boutique in Dublin. It's near Castle Market and called something like Angels & B..., except I'm pretty sure it's not angels, hah. They sell pretty dresses etc. and have a lot linen and stuff.. Could be Williams St or Drury St or something .. Very sucky description, I know, sorry. Google was no help at all. Any input?
Thanks.

5:54 pm - European election
|

I live in Canada so I'm terribly ignorant about what is going on with the European election. I'm reading a wikipedia page, but it's dry reading, I figure it's easier to understand if you live there. It's an election for who goes to European parliament? I take it all the EU member countries are voting to elect their local political parties, please tell me more details. (eg. how it pertains to Ireland, what it means depending on who they send, I guess) Thanks!

Hello everyone - I was pointed to this comm by a poster over at immigration, saying I would probably get a better response over here.
My question is simple, allow me to set you up...
I'm moving to Courtmacsherry, just to the East of Clonakilty in Co. Cork from York in the UK. Everything is in hand as far as getting my PPSN, Bank Accounts and my re-registration of my car among other things.
I'm just stuck on Broadband providers. I'm under no illusion that I'm going to get super fast speeds and fantastic up time for where I'm going to be living. So can those of you that may be living in slightly more rural areas point me to who you would recommend as a decent broadband provider?
I do have a list but I don't want to end up going with a company that has bad customer service, poor feature (wi-fi, landline) etc. Personal experience of these would help me choose.
I've had Eircom and Vodafone At Home mentioned to me? Opinions? I've looked at O2, it doesn't look like I have coverage in Courtmac with them...
Any help would be fantastic, thanks!

6:11 pm - Home swap Amsterdam - Wicklow for a week in July or August anyone?
|

alcarinque
|
I've lived in Ireland for the past four years, but recently moved back to Amsterdam, where I share a small studio in the city center with my boyfriend.
We're looking to go on holidays to Ireland for a week in July or August. I'm not sure about the date yet, but we're flexible. Because we're on a bit of a budget I was wondering if anyone would be interested to swap homes with us for a week's time.
The only requirement I have is that I want to stay in the south of Dublin or in Wicklow, preferably in a studio or small appartment, but I don't really care about amenities, as long as it sleeps two and we'll be able to cook.
In exchange I offer our own studio, in Amsterdam. It's very small, but it's bright and comfortable enough. It's located in one of the older, more interesting neighbourhoods and tram and bike will bring you into the city within ten minutes. Coffeeshops, markets and all the touristic attractions on your doorstep.
If you're interested, or if you know someone who might be, drop me a line!

9:42 pm - Goldman prize winner beaten up by masked Shell "security"
|

cill_ros
|
"I thought they were trying to kill me. They beat me until I stopped moving. I heard one of them say, 'Stop now lads, he's nearly finished.' " – Willie Corduff Willie Corduff was set upon and beaten by Shell's hired thugs in balaclavas as he blocked one of their vehicles. Two years to the day after he was awarded the prestigious Goldman environmental prize, Mr Corduff was protesting what locals insist are illegal works when he was set upon by the security workers, who knelt on his face, twisted his arms behind his back and beat him with an implement.
According the official Garda report, 'a "well-known protester" had been escorted from the site early yesterday and was transferred to hospital as he was complaining of feeling "unwell"' (the Irish Times). The BBC, the Irish media and the Gardai have collaborated to lie about the situation (BBC: "A security guard has been injured after a gang of up to 15 armed and masked men attacked a Shell pipeline site in County Mayo. It is understood boltcutters were used to gain access to the Glengad landfall site. Irish police said the attackers used a company digger on the site and caused considerable damage to the compound."), a tactic which is common in this situation as the media and police make the protesters out to be terrorists.
The matter at issue is Shell's intent to build an off-shore pipeline which will pump gas through a pipe which will be built right through a rural village. Locals' land has been seized for this purpose, works have been built without planning permission, and Gardai have routinely assaulted protesters, who have been brought before the courts on trumpted-up charges. Journalists have termed locals "terrorists" and members of the IRA, and Kevin Myers wrote that one woman, who was concussed after being pushed to the ground, should instead have her head smashed open.

1:36 pm - international student; university of limerick
|

Hey, guys! I'm traveling from Ontario Canada to Limerick for university (University of Limerick to be exact lol) in September and had a few questions.
Are there many international students? And do you know which are the best dorms/res/villages to live in on campus, for first year? I'm looking for quiet areas. Not a lot of noise, since I am going into med school. Are the dorm rooms furnished? Are there single rooms, doubles, etc? If doubles, how do the students get paired up? (Over here in Canada, they usually pair up students with the same majors) About food on campus, are meal plans necessary? And what about finances? How are students paying for their dorms/food etc? Are there any grants or scholarships or bursaries that are available to international students? I've also been considering buying a laptop, but should I buy one in Canada or get one in Ireland? And of course, what is there to do for fun in Limerick! And anything else that you guys think I should know/be aware of before I come. Hahah, thanks so much :)

2:47 pm - Looking for Irish folks who lived in the U.S. between 1975 and 1995
|

|
Hello all I'm a graduate student in the U.S. writing a paper about recent Irish immigration and I'm looking for folks who emigrated to the U.S. between 1975 and 1995 and would be willing to fill out a quick survey about your experience here. I'm writing about the experiences of the "new Irish" (or whatever you want to call yourselves) relating to the Irish-American community and earlier Irish immigrants. I'm interested in hearing from folks regardless of where you live now.
This is a very informal survey (and process) and obviously any questions you don't feel like answering you can skip. I'm just looking for some personal experiences to flesh out the dry story I've gotten from newspapers and books. Please also pass this request on to other folks you know who might be willing to help a stumped american grad student.
If you are interested please email me at elang@gwmail.gwu.edu and I will email you back the survey.
Thanks for your help. Emma
A bit of background on me so you'll know this is legitimate.
I am an MA student in Museum Studies at George Washington University aiming to become a curator in historical museums after I graduate. The paper I am writing is for a class on Immigration and Ethnicity I am taking at American University to as part of the half of my course that must be taken in an academic field.
My primary area of interest is the North Atlantic world and the interactions between the United States and Canada and other English speaking countries.
I got my undergraduate degree from the Universtity of Massachusetts at Amherst and spent a semester studying at U.C.C.
I was born raised in the Boston area and while not of Irish decent became curious at the impact of the Irish community on the area.
p.s. sorry about the cross posting.

The community the_recession is looking for Live Journal members around the world to participate in a very brief poll checking off the economic conditions in your area. By the end of the poll (open to members and non-members, alike) we hope to have a better idea of what the global economic situation looks like right now. If you would be so kind as to help please go here to find your country, territory, colony, or state.
Thank you! :)
