6:17 pm - New years events?

marauded
Does anyone know what kind of special festivals/events are taking place around the country this year? I'd like to do something special this time around. Any suggestions would be fantastic and I'm open to (almost) anything! Thank you :)

I've had a bit of bad luck with Live Journal entries so far. I seem to offend people without meaning too, so I apologise in advance for any offence I may cause with this post (I'm having a go at the tax office here).

I've just had my car registered in Ireland. I had an exempt status put on it so I could keep my UK plates just incase I had to move back to the UK.

Turns out the DVLA weren't too honest to me about my UK tax status once I insured it over in Ireland. So for a while there I was driving a car in limbo between the two countries. Couldn't tax it in Ireland as it had UK plates, couldn't tax it in the UK because it had Irish insurance (couldn't insure it in the UK for Irish roads either).

So long to short - I now have an Irish registered car. So I bought road tax.

Here be ranting and confusion )
If I pay this tax bill for at least three years then I would have paid off the full cost of my car. I just- That just doesn't make sense. Especially when there isn't much of a public transport system here and the only option I have is to own a car.

I'm sorry - it appears that I didn't actually ask anything here, I just ranted a bit.

ardaraith
Hey,

I'm over later this week for some time with the bf. Are ladies wearing coats yet, or is it still blazers and cardigans?

Thanks!

11:26 am - Review of my Riccota Adventure

evaelisabeth
Thanks to everyone that posted suggestions on what to do with a tub of ricotta, I'm gonna be buying more because I don't have enough to try them all. What I ended up doing was stuffed mushrooms as I had some HUGE field mushrooms already in the fridge. I'm a cook by feel kind of a woman so I didn't do any exact measurement just went with the spirit of the recipe. I squeezed the water out of a couple of cupfulls of frozen spinach, added in about 3 heaping tablespoon fulls of ricotta, seasoned liberally with salt, pepper and fresh ground nutmeg. I drizzled some olive oil over the mushrooms (Next time I'm going to brush them top AND bottom), seasoned again with salt and pepper and heaped the spinach mixture on top. I mixed about 1/2 cup of freshly grated Parmesan with 1 cup of breadcrumbs and sprinkled on top with a finish of a few bits of butter (Next time I'm going to add a 1/2 - 1 cup cheddar or Gruyere as I want a more cohesive chewy crust and I ended up drizzling some olive oil on after they had been in the oven for ten minutes as the topping was too dry). I baked them in a 175C oven for about 15 minutes and then did them for another 5 min at 200C as they weren't done enough to my liking.

The taste was excellent the combination of spinach and ricotta was creamy and pleasing with the meaty mushroom. The flavor of the breadcrumbs was lovely but they were too crumbly.

Definitely a recipe I will be using again with the small modifications I mentioned. It was fast, easy and delicious, I could see this being a lovely starter to a nice dinner.

Next time I'm gonna do a run at the spinach sauce and gnocchi I think and perhaps then I will brave canolli.

 Hello!

I will be in Ireland for the month of March, and my plan thus far is to rent a place for the month.  So far I have only used Craigslist to locate places to sublet, but I was wondering if there were any other or better sites I could use to locate a place.  Craigslist mainly only covers Dublin, with a few random exceptions thrown in, and I'm looking to now maybe rent a place on the west coast area.

Also, what are reasonable amounts of money I should be expecting to pay for a month worth of rent?  I've gotten about 20 responses on places for about 500 euros.

Thank you!

3:45 pm - abbreviations

antaine1
In the US, we have standardized two-letter abbreviations for every state. Is there a similar two- or three-letter standard abbreviation for the counties? I've seen TN and TS for Tipp North and Tipp South, but I don't know how standard that is or if there is one for each other county.

hangul_kodou Hey everyone,

I'm interested in going to University College Cork in Ireland. I'm in my last year of high school in Canada, and was wondering if anyone here has gone to UCC? What's good and bad about it? How are the courses- are they interesting or will I be bored immensely?

Basically, any tips?

(Any tips on living in Ireland would be great too, thanks =D)

Hi all!

I'm going to be in Ireland for the entire month of March, 2010.  I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm already making arrangements to stay in a place in Dublin, mostly as a homebase, as I fully intend to travel all over the place as much as possible.

If there are any sites or really any information available for me to start looking at, I would love that.

Also, if some nice Irish people want to kidnap me and keep in Ireland forever once I get that, please feel free.  =D

Bit of an obscure question, but I'm looking for twee/shoegaze music nights in Ireland. Dublin preferably. I'm talking along the lines of My Bloody Valentine, Belle & Sebastian, Ride, Lush, Cocteau Twins, The Jesus & Mary Chain.

The list may seem a bit specific, I'm open minded really, just really want an alternative night that doesn't repeat MGMT, etc all night. Something more relaxed.

I hope someone knows what I'm talking about!

This link should help convey what I mean, thanks in advance!

Hey guys - this FYI goes out to anyone in Dublin or the surrounding area. If any of you have been keeping up with the events unfolding in Iran - the election fraud, the demonstrations, and the firestorm of violence - there is a protest planned: Thursday 18th June, 2pm-4pm, outside the Iranian embassy, 72 Mount Merrion Ave.

Please come if you can, and please get the word out regardless. Ireland is not as wired a country as we'd like to believe we are, so this really needs your help. If you're not in Dublin, but know people who are - or have Dubliners on your flist, as friends on Facebook, Bebo, Myspace, Twitter, wherever - please let them know that this is happening.

And if you haven't been following what's going down in Iran? You should be.

From the Twitter of an Iranian medical student in Tehran:

i am holding her little dress )

(This twitterer's username has been purposefully redacted. As the violence worsens, Iran is under a near-total communications blackout, and reports have come in that a number of 'dissident' twitterers in Iran have already been arrested.)

For more information - including a detailed timeline, dedicated liveblogging, what limited mainstream coverage there is, photos, testimonies, and more - follow the wealth of links here.

Read up; spread the word; wear green. I'll see you tomorrow.

12:35 pm - store search

m0b_mentality
Hi guys,

I'm desperately trying to remember the name of a little shop/boutique in Dublin. It's near Castle Market and called something like Angels & B..., except I'm pretty sure it's not angels, hah. They sell pretty dresses etc. and have a lot linen and stuff.. Could be Williams St or Drury St or something .. Very sucky description, I know, sorry. Google was no help at all. Any input?

Thanks.

5:54 pm - European election

kamomil
I live in Canada so I'm terribly ignorant about what is going on with the European election. I'm reading a wikipedia page, but it's dry reading, I figure it's easier to understand if you live there. It's an election for who goes to European parliament? I take it all the EU member countries are voting to elect their local political parties, please tell me more details. (eg. how it pertains to Ireland, what it means depending on who they send, I guess) Thanks!

Hello everyone - I was pointed to this comm by a poster over at [info]immigration, saying I would probably get a better response over here.

My question is simple, allow me to set you up...

I'm moving to Courtmacsherry, just to the East of Clonakilty in Co. Cork from York in the UK. Everything is in hand as far as getting my PPSN, Bank Accounts and my re-registration of my car among other things.

I'm just stuck on Broadband providers. I'm under no illusion that I'm going to get super fast speeds and fantastic up time for where I'm going to be living. So can those of you that may be living in slightly more rural areas point me to who you would recommend as a decent broadband provider?

I do have a list but I don't want to end up going with a company that has bad customer service, poor feature (wi-fi, landline) etc. Personal experience of these would help me choose.

I've had Eircom and Vodafone At Home mentioned to me? Opinions? I've looked at O2, it doesn't look like I have coverage in Courtmac with them...

Any help would be fantastic, thanks!

6:11 pm - Home swap Amsterdam - Wicklow for a week in July or August anyone?

alcarinque
I've lived in Ireland for the past four years, but recently moved back to Amsterdam, where I share a small studio in the city center with my boyfriend.

We're looking to go on holidays to Ireland for a week in July or August. I'm not sure about the date yet, but we're flexible. Because we're on a bit of a budget I was wondering if anyone would be interested to swap homes with us for a week's time.

The only requirement I have is that I want to stay in the south of Dublin or in Wicklow, preferably in a studio or small appartment, but I don't really care about amenities, as long as it sleeps two and we'll be able to cook.

In exchange I offer our own studio, in Amsterdam. It's very small, but it's bright and comfortable enough. It's located in one of the older, more interesting neighbourhoods and tram and bike will bring you into the city within ten minutes. Coffeeshops, markets and all the touristic attractions on your doorstep.

If you're interested, or if you know someone who might be, drop me a line!

9:42 pm - Goldman prize winner beaten up by masked Shell "security"

cill_ros
"I thought they were trying to kill me. They beat me until I stopped moving. I heard one of them say, 'Stop now lads, he's nearly finished.' " – Willie Corduff

Willie Corduff was set upon and beaten by Shell's hired thugs in balaclavas as he blocked one of their vehicles. Two years to the day after he was awarded the prestigious Goldman environmental prize, Mr Corduff was protesting what locals insist are illegal works when he was set upon by the security workers, who knelt on his face, twisted his arms behind his back and beat him with an implement.

According the official Garda report, 'a "well-known protester" had been escorted from the site early yesterday and was transferred to hospital as he was complaining of feeling "unwell"' (the Irish Times). The BBC, the Irish media and the Gardai have collaborated to lie about the situation (BBC: "A security guard has been injured after a gang of up to 15 armed and masked men attacked a Shell pipeline site in County Mayo. It is understood boltcutters were used to gain access to the Glengad landfall site. Irish police said the attackers used a company digger on the site and caused considerable damage to the compound."), a tactic which is common in this situation as the media and police make the protesters out to be terrorists.

The matter at issue is Shell's intent to build an off-shore pipeline which will pump gas through a pipe which will be built right through a rural village. Locals' land has been seized for this purpose, works have been built without planning permission, and Gardai have routinely assaulted protesters, who have been brought before the courts on trumpted-up charges. Journalists have termed locals "terrorists" and members of the IRA, and Kevin Myers wrote that one woman, who was concussed after being pushed to the ground, should instead have her head smashed open.
