fuck this war
[info]insomnia informs of the death of [info]wolfmoon98.

SPC Michael Smith was killed by a mortar attack. He was a member of C Company, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, based out of Korea. He leaves behind his wife, whom he married in Korea last summer before being deployed to Iraq.

He titled his journal too fucking scared to create - this is from one of his last entries:

so i think i might have made a mistake. too many things have entered my mind recently. i don't know if it's because i've been in 3-4 fire-fights, but i'm realizing some things. i'm not going to go into it, but if you must know, ask and i'll say what i can. i don't even know what i'm thinking anymore.

i'm just taking this one day at a time, one mission at a time.

this place sucks.

<3 -Mike
Rest in peace, Mike.

How amazingly awful.

I saw a bumper sticker today that said, 'Support President Bush and our troops.'

I have no problem whatsoever supporting the troops. I have nothing but the utmost respect for them.

Their asshat Commander in Chief, however...well, I won't start. The icon should say it all.

I am sorry to hear about your friend. May he rest in peace.

I didn't know Michael Smith, I found out about his death via [info]insomnia.

I'm sick of learning about Iraqi children being decapitated from missile shrapnel.

I'm sick of learning about hospitals being leveled by bombs.

I'm sick of learning about entire Iraqi families being *mistakenly* wiped out because a bombardier was given "bad info".

I'm sick of learning about fresh-faced US troops being blown to pieces from *insurgents*.

I'm sick of needless death, totally fucking sick of war and the damnable warmongers who continue to perpetrate it.

Bring our troops home - NOW!

Amen to that...for serious.

This is going to be my generation's Vietnam, I think. I've always thought that.

I am sorry to hear about your loss.

I saw one the other day that said "Someone ELSE for President"

I have lost three people to this war. I am done.

I'm sorry, I can't imagine your pain right now.

I wish I'd something uplifting to say, but all this death is overwhelming.

But, they made the final decision. They wanted to join up, and fight. So... they did what they wanted to do I guess. This is my solice.

I am just worried about another friend, who just left two weeks ago, and another who is waiting.

Rest in peace, Mike.

You wrote in your journal the following:

i will fight so no one can degrade our flags. i will do this, in the name of the United States, in my home state, and for the people living there. my friends. my family. my brothers in arms. they are who i'm going to fight for, so that they may be free.

I'm sorry I never got the chance to thank you for wanting to fight to keep us free, and I'm sorry I never got the chance to try to explain why the greatest threats to our freedom may not be what you thought they were.

The pain a person goes through when they are injured, and the agony of grief that person's loved ones go through when they are told of your death should be compared to the pain your flags go through when they is degrated. Truth is, the flag feels nothing at all, much like the politicians here who continue to prosecute this madness of a war.

Iraq sucks. Wish you were here. Wish you were alive.

My condolences. I find it interesting that people are leaving eulogies in his LJ. It seems a fitting way for the LJ community to pay its respects.

I just complained to several reporters yesterday at a rally about how our soldiers are being exploited by the Regime; this just helped to hammer it home to me why I hate what our overlords are doing.

I'm friends with a lot of service people and it grieves me to see this Chickenhawk administration send our good men and women into this quagmire that makes no sense at all.

I never knew him, and even though I don't support this fascist regime we have in place, I have nothing but the greatest respect for this fallen soldier. It makes me take pause and count my blessings, and I hope George Bush sleeps well tonight knowing that Mike Smith's and hundreds of other soldiers' families won't sleep a wink. Too bad the men who voted to go to war are too old to fight. I think Bush owes it to Mike and the other hundreds who've been killed to go over there and see what a God-awful shitty mess he's making them get killed for. I hope these warmongers are happy that they're sacrificing the flower of American youth. My condolences to his family, and his friends. May he rest in peace.

That's so unbelievably sad. I just explored his journal, and what kills me are the replys to others he made when he said he'll be home soon.

This makes me hate the bush administration even more, and who knew it was humanly possible...

A friend of my family is 18 and will be deployed in march (he's in the marines). I saw him at Christmas time and he said something that I thought was very telling. "It's not a war - it's a guerilla mission." Pointless waste of human lives...

That is so sad... and when you multiply it by however many people have died in this war already... at what point do we all collectively say it's enough? :(

Now see, this is the kind of shit that I just don't understand.

The media is supposedly "liberal-biased", yet whenever I see some news coverage that gets "up close and personal" with a soldier, they portray them as LOVING their job over there, anxious to get into firefights, to "rid the world of the bad guys", etc.

You never hear about the average soldier, the one who is scared, lonely, sick of death, combat, and the entire situation. I want to know what the troops REALLY think about their job over there, not through some Bush-Administration filter that instantly turns them all into George-loving Repugnicans.

Thank you so much for this post. Please know that your duty is done, Mike, and you can now rest.

There's a lot of soldiers that blog and the majority I've come across hate the war and realize what BS it is.

One comment that stood out - a grunt mentioning that his sergeant reminds them that they're fighting for oil.
