lj archive servers down?
Hi! I downloaded ljarchive the other day to back up a couple of journals, but the servers don't seem to be working, at least for me. I've checked out my firewalls to see if they're the ones preventing me from connecting, but they all say that ljarchive is allowed to connect to the internet. So... I guess it's not my computer, but that the servers are down instead. It's what I can only conclude right now. Here's the error I'm constantly getting when I try to connect to ljarchive:

EF.ljArchive.Engine.ExpectedSyncException: An expected exception occurred: ServerNotResponding ---> System.Net.WebException: Unable to connect to the remote server ---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond

at EF.ljArchive.Engine.Sync.ThreadStart()
--- End of inner exception stack trace ---

Is there a step that I missed and that I need to do to make it work? I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out or if there's another lj archive program I can use if ljarchive's servers are constantly down. Thanks. :)

Edit: Fixed! Thanks everyone for all your help!

Someone who knows something will probably be along shortly, but in the meantime I can tell you that the ljarchive server seems to be fine (I've never had a problem with them, actually). I would check the version of ljarchive and the .NET caveat here: http://fawx.com/software/ljarchive/

I have 0.9.7... does that help? I hope that's the latest version. And I'm afraid I don't understand what the .NET has anything to do with ljarchive, sorry.

.NET is a piece of supplementary Windows software which LJarchive needs in order to work properly. If you don't have a recent version of .NET on your PC, LJarchive may have problems.

I've got no idea whether this relates to your error or not, I'm afraid. But as [info]valiskeogh said, LJarchive doesn't have its own servers -- it just communicates between your PC and the ordinary LJ servers. So it sounds like your LJarchive installation is for some reason not communicating properly with the LJ servers.

I downloaded and installed .NET, restarted my computer, made sure my firewalls were not only whitelisting both ljarchive and lj-sec but were disabled too, but I've yet to access LJ via these two programs. What gives? :(

lj archive is a program, it doesn't have servers. it connects to the livejournal servers to download the lj entries.

i seriously doubt that the lj servers are down. if they were, you'd have a hard time posting and reading messages.

That error has nothing to do with ljArchive's server. It's referring to the server that contains your journal (e.g, http://www.livejournal.com/ ).

Just keep trying until your backup goes through. Fair warning, though - if the server isn't responding because it's overloaded, rapid-fire hammering the "Sync" option is only going to make things worse, so take a break between tries.

Good luck!

I really don't understand why Firefox can access LJ just fine, but both ljarchive and lj-sec can't. Do they have anything to do with IE? I have IE disabled from accessing the internet...

They might. I know that at least one other program for LJ, Semagic, requires IE to have internet access.

Fixed! Apparently it does need to have IE connect to the internet. Which I find odd and a little irritating since I hate IE and all. :\
