affirmative, there are bot accounts on LiveJournal
Abuse is investigating. There's a really long list of usernames, and we gotta check 'em all individually, so this isn't going to be insty-fix.

If users are concerned about the friendings, you can tell them Abuse is investigating. If the users wish, they may report usernames they've observed by using the Abuse report form (FAQ 105). Otherwise, reassure them that they can just ignore them and they will likely go away by the time investigation is complete. FAQ on friend-ofs, etc.

Of course, if this is just a normal case of "who's this chump adding me?" you should not do the Abuse song & dance, but handle it same as always.

I have received three new friends with questionable artsy taste in scantily clad women--nobody I know would like to know. So I can just delete their sorry unannounced behinds--this is a good thang to know.

Someone linked me here. Thanks for posting about it.

If I'm allowed to encourage support volunteers to read what I've posted about the bots, the link is: http://nympholept.livejournal.com/tag/russian+bots

If not, please delete this comment.

Thanks to [info]nympholept (above) who directed me to this thread.

You would do a great service to the lj community if you made this issue about unwanted friends who are possible 'bots' SEARCHABLE in the FAQ's and if you listed ways to detect possible fake journals and how to report them. Seriously, it should not be difficult to get help on this issue, and it is!! It's already unnerving to be friended against your will without support being difficult to navigate.

I really think you should make an announcement (since this problem is also occurring on Facebook); but I'm not hopeful. I get it that a big announcement that lj is being inundated with bot journals might be bad for business. However, making help easier to find is a small step that could reassure people.

Oh yeah, my bot total (all have been suspended-for now) is around 8. I do appreciate all your hard work dealing with this.

You've commented in a community that's used so that Tech Support volunteers can watch and get the information needed to answer requests, so it's probably not the right place to get the information that you're conveying to the correct people.

You might want to check out [info]suggestions or send a note to the feedback area.

Just to comment on what you've brought up, the LJ Abuse department is handling requests specifically about these bots because that's the category the requests can be aggregated in for investigation. The operations and engineering team is also involved, and everyone would rather solve the problem technically than let the situation linger - so there's active work on that front.
