supporthelp priv
I added a new priv type to the priv system ... "supporthelp".

The following users have the "admin" priv over support help: dakus, genders, insomnia, and opiummmm. I did that off the top of my head... I don't know who's really the most active and in charge of support. Ask in lj_support and those people can give you the supporthelp priv.

Maybe we should add a place on the support page people can ask if they can post?

But what's to say that person asking doesn't suck?

Here's what I'm thinking ----

* If remote user has supporthelp priv, they can reply and it gets emailed right away.

* If they don't, they can reply but it won't get emailed, and it'll be shown in "pending" state in gray or something on the support page, and somebody with the supporthelp priv can read it and send it, if it's acceptable.

Once a user gets enough of their pending answers approved and used, then we give them access to post without review.

sounds like a good system.. there are a lot of ways to approach the support idea, but i think this one might work well since its somewhat backwards compatible with the old one except some people won't get the emails now.

What happens if you get a user posting just a gigantic number of answers.... many good, that are approved/used, but still, many bad answers too?

Heh - with support, I felt better being able to clearly see what was getting/being done. This "communities" gig - it feels like I went from 'law enforcement' to 'politics'.

Interesting solution. Just gotta hope that people with the priv's for now aren't too busy to let stuff thru, or users might be waiting a few hours for answers. Maybe it's no big deal. People do live in time zones other than American ones though :)

I stopped doing support for a few days cause there were so many requests and I never got a chance to reply there were so many replies. Now I'm just on windows/unix client and customization I think. And I've even got some chances to reply :)

Anyone got any comments on my support? Gita thought I was pretty decent.

Hey hey. One question I have to ask... if I'm logged in via the browser, is there a function to edit a comment I posted to someone's journal? Cause there is only the delet button next to my name. Deleting and reposting is a pain in the butt.

Oh yeah, if you think I did support ok, do you think I could have permission to post again> *grin*

Thanks,

tifkat

No way to edit a comment *sigh*
Trust me I know - I delete to fix stuff that I catch (stupid spelling errors, etc) and usually get a comment as I was putting the new version up.

FAQ Reference:
Can I edit/delete a comment I posted or that was posted in my journal?

;)
No editing, but you can use the 'preview' button before posting a comment to re-check if it's what you want posted.

Eh... I should have known there'd be an FAQ. I'm sure I've even read it.. I wish the blue pencil was applicable to each entry not just the top one. How hard would it be to do really?

My brain says, "isn't the original post just an entry in the database, and the comments are just the same?" If so it'd just be a matter of copy and paste wouldn't it??

i'm glad to see that someone has taken this path. while it provides a mild annoyance that i can't currently provide support answers anymore, i'm also not going to have to endure some of the more ludicrous answers i've seen people give in the support section. i've been known to be forced to smack my monitor every now and then in anger at how stupidly some people have answered support questions. it seems logical that anyone wanting to give a support answer should go through and make sure their answer works before posting it, but maybe that's just me. i stand by my measely 6 points (plus however many i might have gotten from support questions i've answered that were just never closed) and am glad to know i was able to help.

is there a plan to set up some system of recruiting more volunteers to help monitor the support section now that it isn't open to everyone, or are people going to be added on a probationary period until it's shown that they won't give users horrid answers?

Was anyone smacking the people? (The ones giving bad answers) Not literally of course, but it would certainly help them to learn. I'm rather new to livejournal as a whole and livejournal support, and what worried me was the lack of feedback. I tried to only answer requests when I felt I knew the answer and to check back on old requests to catch errors. But I know I'd have appreciated more experienced/knowledgeable people informing me if I did anything wrong.

Well, this new system sounds like it will provide that. I think it's a good idea.

I also think there has been an increased level of ..er .. inacurate answers to support requests - and restricted access is the only answer.

I would like to continue to volunteer my services, if you think i've been of some help.
