More on the EU Internet Programme
Just received this e-mail from a Conservative MEP. So really a measure to increase competition? Improve our internet access?

This way to read the e-mail )

Since they have tried to increase compitition, prices have gone up, we have been pestered by canvessers at our doors, phones and by letter. I do not find it reassuring in the least!

Just received the exact same e-mail from John Purvis Member of the European Parliament for Scotland, please note, no party.

I don't think we can say it is the French, I think the British are at it as well. Hold out hope for the rest of Europe, and the SNP!

Current Mood: unconvinced

Update on Internet Access!
I received this email from one of my local MEP's.

Good Afternoon

Thank you for contacting me on the important subject of internet access,
I have had a great deal of correspondence on this point, from all over
the EU.

I can assure you that I am and have always been in favour of free access
to the internet, and in favour of maximum privacy. I have always
supported those principles, as have my Scottish National party
colleagues in the London or Scottish Parliaments.

I am delighted that our, and your, pressure paid off, and the amendment
which stipulates that "no restriction may be imposed on the fundamental
rights and freedoms of end users" was approved by 40 votes to 4. This
is, as you can imagine, a thumping majority and I am delighted that the
Committee backed fundamental freedom. We have this morning issued the
press Release below in my name.

Of course, this issue is not over in the Parliament yet, and the dossier
now moves to the full plenary meeting in May for a vote of the full
Parliament. I will continue to press for as much freedom as possible to
internet users. You may wish to keep in touch with this and other
cmapaigns either via my webpage www.alynsmith.eu or even become my
friend on Facebook!

Yours aye

Alyn

Calling all supporters in Scotland
From Equality Network, 30 Bernard St, Edinburgh, EH6 6PR

URGENT CALL FOR ACTION

Contact your MSPs now about the hate crime bill!

MSPs will vote Tomorrow, 18th March, on Patrick Harvie’s hate crime bill, the Offences (Aggravation by Prejudice) (Scotland) Bill.

If MSPs vote yes, the bill will go on to its second and third stages. But if MSPs vote no, the bill will be scrapped.

Scrapping the bill would mean we’d lose our only chance for hate crime against LGBT people to be taken as seriously as racist and sectarian hate crime. We need this bill to pass!

If you agree with this, please contact your MSPs, before Wednesday, to ask them to vote for the general principles of the Offences (Aggravation by Prejudice) (Scotland) Bill on Wednesday.

Contacting your MSPs is easy

Please forward this to anyone else you think would be interested in contacting their MSPs.

Looking for Irish folks who lived in the U.S. between 1975-1995

Hello all
I'm a graduate student in the U.S. writing a paper about recent Irish immigration and I'm looking for folks who emigrated to the U.S. between 1975 and 1995 and would be willing to fill out a quick survey about your experience here. I'm writing about the experiences of the "new Irish" (or whatever you want to call yourselves) relating to the Irish-American community and earlier Irish immigrants.  I'm interested in hearing from folks regardless of where you live now.

This is a very informal survey (and process) and obviously any questions you don't feel like answering you can skip. I'm just looking for some personal experiences to flesh out the dry story I've gotten from newspapers and books.  Please also pass this request on to other folks you know who might be willing to help a stumped american grad student.

If you are interested please email me at elang@gwmail.gwu.edu and I will email you back the survey.

Thanks for your help.
Emma

A bit of background on me so you'll know this is legitimate.

I am an MA student in Museum Studies at George Washington University aiming to become a curator in historical museums after I graduate. The paper I am writing is for a class on Immigration and Ethnicity I am taking at American University to as part of the half of my course that must be taken in an academic field.

My primary area of interest is the North Atlantic world and the interactions between the United States and Canada and other English speaking countries.

I got my undergraduate degree from the Universtity of Massachusetts at Amherst and spent a semester studying at U.C.C.

I was born raised in the Boston area and while not of Irish decent became curious at the impact of the Irish community on the  area.

p.s. sorry about the cross posting.

With alcohol related deaths running at double the level of the rest of the UK, Scotland is going to ban cheap booze. Or at least make people pay a minimum price per unit of the stuff and curb special offers on booze such as happy hours.

Good idea / bad idea?

Will Carlisle become the new Calais? Will we see large-scale smuggling operations, sneaking truckloads of White Lightning and Special Brew across the border.

On the other hand, perhaps visits to hospitals will increase as a result.

Short film from Scotland
Hey all,

I made a short film that I wrote a few years ago, during a break from making my sci-fi series Night is Day. I've posted it below so feel free to watch it, it's only 8 minutes long. It's a film-noir...that's all I'm saying!

Cheers :D

We've got an aspire 5315 in the house. Its my boyfriends so i'm not used to the system yet, as i used to have a Dell, but long story short.. it died and i sold it on.

Its running vista and there is an annoying pop up balloon thing, which i can't get to go away. EVERY MINUTE of the god damn day it pops up saying Acer eNet Manager Internet Connected or Disconnected, although its always really connected - its strange.

Does anyone know how to turn this thing off? i've had a look at the settings, there doesn't seem to be an option for it. Its darned annoying!

CONTRIBUTIONS WANTED FOR ONGOING MUSICAL PROJECTS

The Melted Rubber Humans are looking for contributors to their sample library.  What we are looking for is high quality MP3 files of voice recordings.  We are open minded about the subject matter, style or whatever.  If you have anything you want to say, record it and email it to me at shooglemail@googlemail.com

To hear the sort of stuff The Melted Rubber Humans have done before, check out http://www.myspace.com/captainmelted (six new tunes have just been uploaded).

Tearing Down The Walls Of Your Dreams by The Melted Rubber Humans

My latest video is called "Tearing Down The Walls Of Your Dreams".  It features a timelapse sequence of Rosie Sunshine & family & friends, with a banging techno soundtrack by the mighty Melted Rubber Humans: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xl2YeJOTBiE

If you check out a previous video, Child Of The Raves, http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nb5j-JQTds4 you will see that my music making skills have come on some... at least I hope you'll think so.

There are now 11 Sunshine Family videos on You Tube at http://uk.youtube.com/user/deerimbaud which are all entertaining in their own way.

Enjoy!

The Melted Rubber Humans - Calling Down The Angels

The Melted Rubber Humans latest track is "Calling Down The Angels", a much more ambient piece than their last one, "The Ultimate Orgasm".  It's been posted up at http://www.virb.com/melted_rubber_humans_2 and is available for free download.  There are three tracks there altogether, and more to come, so if you dig it, bookmark it.  The Melted Rubber Humans have three albums available for free download at http://www.virb.com/melted_rubber_humans

For those of you out there that are fans of ATB, you might want to check out the new video for their single, "Til I Come", as re-mixed by Captain Melted: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XIIRaC2Z1VY (life does not get much cuter than this).  The star of the show is Rosie Sunshine, who will be an international rock star of megalithic proportions, once she's big enough to hold a guitar.

Supporting Scottish filmmakers!
Hello everybody,

I hope it's okay to post this here!

I've just finished making the first series of Night is Day which is a 6 part superhero drama series about a superhero, Jason Mackenzie, who fights crime and protects the city of Glasgow from the evil Mr. Philips.

The DVD is online now to buy for only £10 at http://www.nightisday.com. It's got all 6 episodes on 1 discs and special features on the other including a making of documentary, cast interviews, audition clips, a production gallery, outtakes and some fun bits we filmed during making our series.

All proceeds from the DVD sales are going towards funding series 2 which start in May.

I hope some of you out there will help us out and buy our DVD :)

This post is being cross-posted here and there :)

Thanks!

Ullapool, Scotland
If this is not allowed, please delete it, and I'm sorry if it isn't allowed.

But! I'm doing a project for a Travel.Tourism class and I've been assigned Ullapool, Scotland. I've done some research on this place and it seems amazing.

I only have to come up with 2 days and 1 night of things worth doing. I've found a hostel called Ullapool Youth Hostel. And, I'm hoping to plan a hiking tour and/or fishing--but I've had a hard time finding something in my budget. I would also like to go to the harbour, are there any tours for tourists of the harbour? If so, how much? Any other ideas are appreciated!!!

I'm only allowed to spend £75 for food, lodging, activities, EVERYTHING. If you guys have any ideas I would greatly appreacite them!!!

I was also thinking about doing a seascape expedition but it's kind of out of my price range at £27 and then I'd only be left with £32 for food and drink for two days, which I do not think is enough.

Thank you sooo much!

Betsy

ps: How does an American girl like me pronounce this city? Thanks again!

Hellllo :)
Hey,

At last a dedicated Scotland community on here :D

Sooo yeah, introductions I suppose. I'm Fraser, 23 going on 24 this March. I originally lived outside Glasgow in a wee village, but since September I moved to Tullibody near Stirling where I work as a web developer with my friends Kai and Eileen.

I'm also a filmmaker, but recently I've been devoting my time to my tv series, Night is Day.

Life is short apparently so I like to fill it with listening to music, watching TV/DVDs, going to the cinema, bowling, megazone, playing the Wii, going to pubs/bars, writing and seeing the world.

I'm a tad random - probably inspired by the TV shows and comedians I like! Spaced, Father Ted, Scrubs, Family Guy, How I Met Your Mother, Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Buffy, Angel, Firefly - comedians such as Eddie Izzard, Lee Evans, Bill Bailey etc.

So yeah feel free to say hi!

Current Mood: happy

SCOTLAND DIES LAUGHING
SCOTLAND DIES LAUGHING

TRIBUTES are being paid to Scotland this morning after the entire country laughed itself to death.

The alarm was first raised at around 10pm last night as thousands of phone calls and text messages went unanswered.

Small groups of volunteers from Berwick-Upon-Tweed and Carlisle ventured north just after midnight only to find houses full of dead people gathered around still blaring television sets.

By dawn, as RAF helicopters flew over deserted city streets, it was clear that the whole country had suffered a catastrophic abdominal rupture.

Wayne Hayes, a special constable from Northumberland, said: "We went into one house in Dunbar and found three men sitting on the sofa with huge smiles on their faces, still holding cans of 70 shilling. They seemed to be at peace."

He added: "In a house near Edinburgh we found a man face down on the living room floor with his trousers and pants round his knees. "It seems he may have been showing his bare buttocks to the television when he keeled over."

Roy Hobbs, a civil engineer from Northampton, said: "I got a call from my friend Ian in Stirling at about 9.50pm. "He was already laughing when I answered the phone, but after about 25 minutes of the most vigorous and uncontrollable hilarity, everything suddenly went very quiet."

Moving tributes are already being placed along the Scotland-England border with many mourners opting to leave a simple bag of chips or a deep fried bunch of flowers.
