New Features:

Added optional location identification when creating a new entry or editing an old one. The user can push the “detect” button and it will automatically fill in general location based on IP. For more detailed location Google Gears, Wi2Geo, or a Wi-Fi connection is required.
Paid users can now create a nickname or "Note" which only they will see when viewing the "lj user" tag or when viewing the other user's profile.
Pingbacks will now be enabled for Basic and Plus accounts. Pingbacks are currently only available for use for LiveJournal entries and links; external pingbacks have been disabled until they're able to be used correctly (we're waiting for other pingback-enabled sites to upgrade to the newest version).

Bug fixes:

Cyrillic MSN interstitial disabled for Opera users
Improved performance of admin/schools/pending.bml so that it should no longer time out when called with arguments (LJSV-653)
Made all content on create.bml https instead of mixed secure/insecure content
Fixed bug that prevents some users from accessing their message center inbox (LJSV-351)
Fixed bug that incorrectly routes http requests with a trailing period after livejournal.com

We are releasing the first stage of a new in-browser messaging feature today. It will be announced in news at a later date.

LiveJournal Messenger

This is a web-based messaging service in partnership with Windows Live ID. You'll be able to add contacts and chat with friends while on the LiveJournal site. Here is how to use it:

Use your existing Windows LiveID or sign up for one using your LiveJournal username
Enable LiveJournal Messenger in the Extensions tab on the Account Settings page
You will receive a confirmation email and will then be able to use your LiveJournal Messenger account
LiveJournal Messenger will appear in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen
Add contacts using their existing Live ID handle or their LiveJournal Messenger name (username@livejournal.com)
Your friends will be sent a notice, then will appear in your "Contacts" list once they have confirmed

Known Issues:

This feature is not supported in Opera
Some site copy needs updating

Additional change: We have been testing a new Content Delivery Network. The testing has gone well, so we've signed on with Limelight. This change in includes userpics, images, CSS, and javascript. Anything that was previously p-stat will now be l-stat, userpics will go from p-userpic to l-userpic, etc.

Over the past couple days the following changes have been made:
46.1

added twenty three new v-gifts
corrected security issue in Friend Finder, which incorrectly followed the setting "Who can view your contact info" rather than the correct "Do you want users to be able to find you by searching for your primary email address?"

changed the format of the v-gift page in the Gift Shop to allow SMS purchase of v-gifts by Cyrillic users
fixed some Friend Finder issues including an IE7 page error, a JavaScript error, and correct dismissal of the interstitial for Find by Email settings
fixed an error which would sometimes cause the contextual popup menu to not display upon mouse-hover on non-default userpics
corrected issue on My Account Settings/Notifications page so that "Someone comments in my journal, on any entry" or "Someone replies to any comment I make" options can be unchecked and settings properly saved
fixed Scrabook error when uploading images to a New Gallery in IE 6 and 7
corrected two issues which were causing 100 & 155 errors for commentors on articles from The Independent

And today, we have re-enabled the Friend Finder feature after fixing the Friend Finder related bugs above.

Pingbacks - For those Paid Accounts who have not been able to send or receive Pingbacks, you may resolve the issue by going to the Privacy tab on the My Account Settings page, scroll to the bottom and click "Save". Although the default setting is "LiveJournal.com only", this setting is not recognized until settings are changed or saved. A fix for this issue is anticipated in r47.

Manage Email Addresses:

After changing to a new email address for use with an account, verifying it, and using it on the account for six months, it becomes un-removable, but allows for all earlier email addresses to be removed on the Manage Email page.

Release #44.1

In a break from recent tradition, I'm going to start posting release announcements for any patch release that has user visible changes. I will not be posting entries for patches that only impact internal things (infrastructure improvements, debugging code, etc.), so there will sometimes be gaps in post numbers.

Anyway, we have fixed a handful of problems that were introduced by release #44:

Bug Fixes:

Fixed a JavaScript bug in Shades of Grey Theme
Fixed a bug where S2 would occasionally print an error when trying to display a screened comment
Fixed a bug that prevented posting of entries to Custom Friends Groups
Fixed a bug that prevented comment text from showing up on the portal page
Reverted a buggy change in R44 that changed the behavior of replying to screened comments.

Finally, one correction:
In R44, a new feature was introduced to allow for the viewing of Friends pages by date. What we failed to mention is that this feature is only available when viewing using an S2 style. We are currently evaluating whether it is feasible to make this feature available for S1 users.
Edit: Correction to the correction. Even if you are viewing a journal in an S2 style (by using style=mine), the Friends pages by date feature doesn't work as long as the journal itself is using an S1 style.

Bug fixes:

We reworked the backend code which displays ads on the site in release #40. Due to an oversight, they incorrectly showed on some system-type journal pages for Paid accounts. Bug has been fixed for the following pages: memories, allpics, todo.index, todo.item.
Added commas to numbers in stats on profile page where they were missing.
Collapsing and then re-expanding v-gift section on new profile no longer introduces huge whitespace
Fixed bug on profile page which added an extra </div> if Posting Access list is empty (viewable on your own profile or that of a community you maintain)
Borders on images placed into the "Bio" section of the profile will now show up
Fixed bug on add to memories page so it never shows 2 ADV blocks

Release #Montana

The biggest release of all. We have been preparing for this ever since I joined LiveJournal back in April. As I write this, we have just brought up the entire LiveJournal system in Billings, Montana. There should be no functional changes, for obvious reasons, but after our database and memcache servers finish catching up, performance should be at least as good, if not better, than it was in San Francisco.

Major thanks and kudos to the LJ and 6A Ops staff who worked tirelessly to get us to this point, and a special thanks to burr86 and dormando of 6A who went above and beyond to make this gigantic transition possible.

Enhancements

Upgraded OpenID client support to support OpenID 2.0. This allows users with OpenID 2.0 accounts (such as Yahoo) to use those credentials to log in to LiveJournal.

Fixed a bug that allowed suspended users to still add friends.
Fixed a bug with preview of entries.
Fixed a bug where last.fm "current music" links broke with certain characters in the title or track listing.

Release #40

Another release is upon us.

New Last.fm functionality and UI has been added.
Expunged OpenID accounts can now be recreated.
LJ-Cut now works in Safari when the selection is less than a complete paragraph.
It is now possible to see more than 2000 responses to a poll.
The code used to display ads on the site has been reworked. All ads should display the same way they had before, but if you notice any pages where the ad display is incorrect, please let us know.
For people with over 500 friends, the "view all" link on the profile now goes to friendslist.bml instead of the directory.
Linked interests on the profile page now go to a directory search for Paid and Plus users.
Directory search is now able to be filtered to just communities or just users.
Community moderators can now mark an entry as spam from the moderation queue, instead of having to approve it first.
Limit on comments per post has been increased from 5,000 to 10,000. All comments after 5,000 will have to go through captcha (prove you're human) verification.
Create message field for private messages has been made larger.
RSS and Atom feeds respect the noindex tag.
Firefox now 2.0.0.17 works with the RTE (Rich Text Editor) .

Release #39

Release 39 has cracked its shell and is peering confusedly at the wide world around it.
Changes include:

There is now a persistent preference for paid users to use style=mine. Paid accounts will now see a toggle in the nav bar. There is also UI for it in the settings page.
HTML markup fix in Expressive.
Snap integration behavior has changed.
1. By default (including for logged out users), Snap is on
2. The Snap setting determines if you see or don't see Snap site-wide
3. For all users their journal now reflects their personal preference. If they have Snap turned off, no one visiting their journal sees it.
A new version of the profile can now be beta tested by enabling it here. A link has also been added to the site header to turn it on.
Link clarification on the Journal navigation dropdown
1. "Change Journal Theme" has changed to "Select Journal Style"
2. "Customize Journal Theme" to "Customize Journal Style"
Fixed alignment in Writer's Block.
The lightweight "lynx" scheme used for mobile browsers no longer shows graphic previews.
Problems copying and pasting from MS Word into the RTE have been fixed.
The RTE has been temporarily disabled for users running Firefox 2.0.0.17 because of an incompatible change in that version of Firefox. We hope to be able to re-enable it in the future.

We bring you this patch release in order to address some problems that people have been experiencing with the rich text editor.

Miscellaneous JavaScript errors fixed.
The More Colors option on the text color selector is fixed.
No longer adds extra lines to drafts saved from the RTE.
The "Browse Server" button from the Insert Image window has been removed.
Insertion of Scrapbook images from the Insert Image window now works properly.
The Firefox spellchecker now works with the RTE.

A large percentage of reported problems with the RTE have been due to browser caching problems. As before, please follow these instructions to clear your cache before reporting any problems.

Release #37

Release #37 is released.

This release will also be discussed in news. Please use this thread only for technical or functional aspects of the release.

Notable changes:

The RTE editor has been greatly improved, and is now using the latest (2.6.3) version of FCKEditor. This means that modern versions of Firefox, IE, Opera, and Safari should all work. Please comment with any problems that you find. Please clear your cache before trying this feature as it might not properly detect updated javascript files.
Basic accounts are back, as discussed in lj_2008 and news in recent weeks. Logged-out visitors will now see ads on Basic journals but the experience for logged in users will not change.
We're bringing strikethrough back. Last year we changed the visual display of deleted and suspended usernames from a hyperlink with a line through the name to a non-hyperlinked bold font representation. We've reverted this change, returning deleted and suspended usernames to a struck-through and clickable state.
New comment subscriptions are no longer displaying empty comment strings.
LJ names with leading or trailing underscores are no longer automatically eligible to rename their account for free. In these cases, a support request is now required in order to request a free rename.

Release #36 problem

While deploying release 36 today, we encountered a bug at the web serving layer that caused our proxy server to serve incorrect content; including displaying userpics instead of our homepage, entries at incorrect urls, etc. The problem lasted about 15 minutes and we have rolled back this release until we fix the bug. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Release #35

Release #35 is released.

The global site footer was re-designed.
You can now send a V-gift to a user from a pop-up that is displayed when you mouse over a userpic.
Translation system performance is improved.
Some user interface translated text would be incorrectly marked as needing an update. This has been corrected.
The approximately 5% of users who were seeing no answers when clicking on a poll's "View Answers" link should no longer experience that problem.

Release #34

Hello, here is the list of changes in release #34.

The footer of all application pages was modified to make navigation easier. Additionally, it has a select box to "Change language".

Also, minsecurity is respected in the UI of update.bml now, so that if you have a minsecurity set, that security level will be automatically selected in the drop-down, and options of "lesser" security will be disabled/grayed out. And for communities, the options are now public and members, instead of using the personal journal options in the list. No functional changes with all of this, just making the UI match what actually happens.

The IE Thread Expander bug with deleted comments in comments tree was fixed.

The look of "update journal" page (update.bml) was improved in "altlogin" mode, when you post entering login/password of other account.

LJ documentation was updated and extended.

Release R33

Hello to everyone!

Release R33 has arrived! Here are the changes:

There are now two separate menu items in navigation menu - Change Journal theme and Customize Journal Theme.
The manage comments/profile settings/manage settings pages now have links to each other.
When logged out, the login form is now shown in the control strip of sponsored accounts as had previously been the case only for paid and permanent accounts.
Some updates to the Circular theme were made:

minor CSS fixes
reply pages were fixed
padding to the userpic in the sidebar was added.

The latest 5 entries on the EditJournal page are shown now, so users don't have to do a search first if they don't want to.
A redirect was added from the old manage accounts page (/manage/) to the current one (/manage/horizon.bml).
JavaScript confirmation "Your theme has been changed" is now displayed when users change their journal theme.
Newstube.ru content is allowed to be embedded in the comments.
Some changes in the LJ polls tool tips were made, to make it clearer what different things means:

"None" changed to "Just Me" when the logged-in user is the poster of the poll
"results viewable to" changed to "detailed results viewable to"
On the poll creator, the copy for the viewing options drop-down is clearer now ("Who can view the text entry responses and voters in this poll?")

Small copy and design changes for /manage/sms page were done.
A confirmation page is displayed after a user edits an entry (instead of redirecting to the entry).
Assorted bug fixes:

A bug preventing new subscriptions from being added to entries is now fixed.
Bug "Entry count on calendar not updating" is fixed now and users can see correct figures on the Calendar pages.
A bug preventing users with sponsored accounts from changing the color of their control strip is now fixed.

We released a new version today. Nothing earth-shattering, just a few goodies:

A new journal option to prevent spam has been added. A journal owner can now require reCAPTCHA before a comment is made. You may specify which group of users (anonymous, non-friends or all) will be required to pass the test.
Journal records navigation (next post/previous post) has been modified. It now skips items you have no permission to read.
New tasty virtual gifts have been added.
S2 documentation has been updated.
A bug with invalid encoding in e-mail posts ("Mobile posting") with non-ASCII text and attached images is now fixed.
Tips of the day ("Did you know") are displayed on home page in random order.
New S2 themes have been created and a list of featured themes has been updated.
Duplicate subscriptions can't be created now.
The http://www.livejournal.com/openid/approve.bml page and new v-gift notification were localized.

New abuse team policy (from release r30.1)
OpenID users with verified e-mails can comment in journals where "registered users only" commenting policy is in effect
The "my music" attribute in posts can be filled with Last.FM scrobbler data
Access to journal can be restored via secret question/answer
Users can freely subscribe to/unsubscribe from Cyrillic services (former SUP opt-in/out)
For Cyrillic users, a new type of account ("Sponsored") is launched
Assorted bug fixes: positioning and the number of lines "no messages" in inbox; description of the charity V-Gifts section for logged-out users; error in Abuse/DMCA perjury statement box
New V-Gifts: Purple Rhino (charity); EURO 2008
Photobucket posting from the rich text editor works

As you can see the list of changes is rather long. It's mostly because this release contains many changes that were done but not put in the previous one.

Inbox's buttons behavior was modified: "Delete all" and "Mark all read" affect items in current folder only

Navigation added to community management pages

Content flagging pages were redesigned to improve usability

The tag limit for non-Basic users was increased to 1200

Fixed bug with authorship of comments in e-mail notifications ("there was reply to YOUR comment")

A couple of e-mail notifications were localized (New VGift, Befriended)

Calendar view of journal was modified - now you see the number of posts you have permission to read

Day navigation in journal ("next day"/"prev day") was modified - now it skips days without entries you can read

You can specify width and height for LJ Embeds now

Fixed bug with OpenID account that could switch to Plus and get a S2 error on friends page

Issue of displaying screened comments in Expressive was resolved

Several new vgift were added

OpenID users must answer ReCAPTCHA challenge before validating e-mail

Charity vGifts can't be paid with intangible coupons now
