GeoURL Redux
A long time ago, I posted some code and information about how to add GeoURL information to your journal.

Those instructions are no longer even remotely neccesary, as LiveJournal now supports the ability to set your location via the admin console.

Visit the admin console, and type something like:

set icbm "34.2234,-122.3434"

or

set icbm "34.23234N 122.3432W"

This results in a tag similar to <meta name="ICBM" content="34.2234,-122.3434" />

If you're in the US, you can look up your latitude and longitude using geocoder.us. If you're outside the US, you can search for your address on Google Maps. Once you've found it, double click slightly away from the marker, and click "link to this page". The URL in the browser bar now contains something like: "ll=41.85,-87.65". Copy paste the bit after the "ll=" and before the next &, and paste that into the admin console command above.

Then you can Ping GeoURL and see your neighbors. (Hello, Cambridge!)

That's not nearly as bad as my other tools on my website, which let you follow my current location, as uploaded from a gps via my cell phone every 10 seconds.

Talk about stalking material!

Why would I need the admin console? At least on the update journal page there is a field for the location.

Becuase the "Current Location" field does not insert the ICBM tag in your journal.

If you're in S2, and it doesn't work, your style is doing something wrong. If it's a systme style, it should be reported -- if it's not, you're probably missing Page::print_head somewhere, which is the function that causes this to show up.

Looking at your journal in my style seems to confirm this. This means a fair number of features are broken on your journal -- Yadis/OpenID, for one. I'd recommend fixing your style to print print_head() in the <head> somewhere.

If you can put your address in there, it gives you a decimale lat/long in the lower left after you enter it, which you can use for the same purpose.

Does anyone know how to (if it's possible) unset the property? I want to remove the tags from my journal for now.

I don't think it's possible.

You can 'set icbm "0,0"' to make them non-informative though.

Don't forget to go back to geoURL and reping your site after to change the icbm location.

'set icbm "none"' will give you an error message, and unset the property, once http://community.livejournal.com/changelog/2888681.html rolls out, but I have no idea how long that will be.

What do you do once you've added your ICBM address? The only way I can find to get other local addresses is the tiny world map on the main page. There has to be something better than that.

So, I set the information in the admin console, looked at the source for my recent entries page to make sure they added the tag, and now I go to the form to ping my page, and it gives me an error saying it can't parse the coordinates. Am I being stupid or is there something else going on here?

Looks like a GeoURL bug. I'd suggest emailing Ask, since he's a pretty decent dude, at the email address included on the page: "ask@develooper.com".

Actually, if you tell Google Maps your address, it'll give you the latitude and longitude in the United States as well.

set icbm "34.23234N 122.3432W"

Somehow, that command strikes me as funny since it's quite similar to a certain missle type. And I believe that's how they navigate too.

Yes, but copy pasting from geocoder is easier than copy pasting from the URL bar in Google Maps.

An ICBM needs an altitude.

You can't, yet. the next type code rolls out, you go to the admin console and type 'set icbm ""'.
