And also a call for submissions to Kinaara.

Kinaara is an experiment of sorts, and the culmination of much plotting and planning and tearing of hair. Kinaara, to be somewhat more formal, is an upcoming online magazine for the South Asian youth and diaspora, concerned with literature and culture, and in discussions and depictions thereof.

The two lj-ers connected to Kinaara are [info]toujours_nigel and [info]fireshowers, the others in the group being inactive on or unaware of lj. The Facebook group is where team members are likely to be most active, and this journal is also a place where news of Kinaara and updates on the work being done by members is going to be posted, and bears watching.

We will post the first edition of Kinaara on 01.07.2009. The permanant address of the magazine will be revealed at the time.

---

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR::

- Original, exciting and thought-provoking work from people below 30 with a South Asian connection.

- Anything that makes our brains tingle! Essays, articles, poetry, short stories, comics, photo essays, artwork, ramblings, a standalone chapter from the novel you're writing... If you think the world needs to see it, we're interested in it.

- If you have a work or idea that doesn't fit any of the above categories, write to us directly and we'll get back to you.

UPCOMING EDITIONS::

JULY 2009: No theme, everything welcome. Deadline is June 15.

AUGUST 2009: Tentative theme is CONFLICT. Interpret broadly, as long as you remember the focus. Deadline is July 15.

HOW TO SUBMIT::

- For now, we are receiving all correspondence at kinaaramail@gmail.com.

- Writing is best sent as an MS Word (.doc) or Text (.txt) document. If it isn't too long, pasting in the mail body works too.

- Images are loved as JPEG (.jpg) files that don't exceed the size of 500 kbs each.

- Mention your name as you'd like to be credited. Add a two-sentence introduction to yourself. We're interested in knowing where you're from and what you like doing, but you're free to fill your introduction with anything you want to tell.

We are cross-posting this message on our journals and a few relevant communities. Please help us to spread the word. Copy this message and post it in your journals, mail it to your friends, pass it on to anyone who you think will appreciate it. Take the icon if you want, as long as you credit "Kinaara Magazine" somewhere in the notes.

Thank you.

Hello everyone!  I am part of a new community on Indian Literature - the first and only community on LJ talking about literature from India, South Asia and the diaspora. We'd like to have new members joining up for discussion, sharing their favourite books/authors and all kinds of general fanning.

Indian Literature isn't an official community or representative of any organisation. We creators/moderators are, like everyone else, just people who like (or dislike) their books. We won't moderate anything except hurtful/insulting/harrassing posts... and oh, posting your own creative writing. There are other communities for that, [info]india_writing  being quite good among them. Indian Literature was created because we'd like to have a place where we can talk about books, authors, literary trends and such things. If you're into making icons, headers and other art, that's welcome too!

Also, while the community is quite generically called Indian Literature, we're quite open to talking about all South Asian and diasporic literature. We'll be talking about literature in regional languages. We'll be talking about fiction and chicklit and comics and poetry. No restrictions.

See you there at [info]indianlit . Hoping to have a great time interacting! :)

Hi All,

General Elections are heating up this summer in India, and there has been a lot of opinion sharing & shaping on LiveJournal as well around it. We partook of a similar wave during the historical presidential elections of US in 2008, with this community. The intention was to facilitate wide ranging public discussion of important political issues, including reactions of people in the U.S. and abroad to the U.S. presidential elections.

For India, we are certain we want LiveJournal to become the hub for - facilitate, drive, and be part of in any way possible - all citizen driven initiatives. As a  progression toward that, we have partnered with Vote Report India, a collaborative citizen-driven election monitoring platform for the 2009 Indian general elections.

Vote Report India has been seeded as a collaboration that would allow increased transparency and accountability in the Indian election process, and also provide the most complete picture of public opinion in India during the elections. With our community India_Politics, Vote Report seeks to garner opinion through comments, polls, etc. about events and issues around these elections, pool in and share existing expert-views on a regular basis,  as well as allow the global community on LiveJournal to share their thoughts.

I’d urge all of you to visit India_Politics, share your thoughts on existing posts or initiate some discussions yourselves. Look forward to hearing you,

Cheers!

LiveJournal is marking its 10th Anniversary this year, it is indeed one of the Granddaddy’s of Social Media. :) To  celebrate the anniversary Team LJ is bringing out a book to mark this milestone.

One of the things that the editors are keen to include is a sense of the global breadth of LiveJournal. They are looking for examples from across the worlds of great writing within LiveJournal. If you have suggestions, we’d love to hear from you.

Please post them in the comments section below and the team will be in touch. You can read more about this in this community too http://community.livejournal.com/lj_turns10. You’ll notice that the deadline has entries have passed, but fear not, your comments will still be considered (and you will still be eligible for the incentives ;)).

Looking forward to your submissions.

Team LJ India

Hi All,

We would like to announce the closure of the LJ India design contest.

For those who participated, thank you for your submissions. And for those who missed out on the contest, thank you for your support :-)

The entries we received for the contest where not up to the expected standards for the look-feel of LJ India community page :-(.  However, we hope to have a design up for the LJ India community page soon. Once it’s up, it would be great to have your feedback on it.

 Until next time,

Team LJ India

This is a question for all BSNL Broadband users.

I want to apply for the Broadband connection offered by BSNL. But I am not able to decide which modem to choose.

1) Should I buy my own modem or take the one provided by BSNL?

2) If I decide to buy my own modem then which modem is a better one (Company and model number would be helpful), how do I configure the modem that I own. Will the installation guys come and configure it?

3) If I take the modem from BSNL, should I opt for rental or out right purchase?

4) Which type of modem should I take, if I am opting to take the modem from BSNL:
Type - I
Type - II
Type - III
Type - IV
Whats the difference between them all ?

Suggestions like don't go for BSNL connection is not valid, since BSNL is the last option I have got. I have tried every other connection and every thing sucks, especially Wi-MAX.

Hi All

I have pleasant news, so let me not indulge in pleasant talk :)

The judges have given us the much-awaited, celebrated winners of the Quick-Tales contest we held for the india_writing community, and we are keen on having some pomp-and-show around the annoucements too! So, we'll be letting the news out on the 18th of November, 2008 at Oxford Book Store, Barakhamba Road, New Delhi. We warmly invite all our members to a short-story reading session by Suhel Seth, who will, of course, be reading from the winning entries. The event details are
here and we'd like all of you who can make it to register at the soonest!

Also, present to highlight LiveJournal's progress in India and share thoughts on supporting self-publishing through social-media platforms will be Benjamin Wegg-Prosser, Director of Corporate Development, LiveJournal.com.

All of you, who cannot be present, have no cause to despair. We'll be updating you about the event on-the-go. We are hoping that this would be the first of many such off-line meets through which this community will grow and share some beautiful writing in times to come. :)

Just to remind you all, the people's poll is coming to a close tonight as well, and the winner would be announced at the event.

Hoping to see all of you there. :)

Manpreet

Hiya Friends,

I am new to this community. I hope it is OK to write this kind of an entry, so please let me know if it is not.

I work best with points, so here it goes:

1) I am really excited to be part of this community. I am glad LJ is focussing on India. I believe there are several Indian members of LJ and I want the number to grow. I am really excited to have a forum to interface with fellow Indians and talk about various issues concerning (or not concerning) our country.

2) I am slightly unclear about the scope of this community. What do you discuss here? I mean we are Indians all right but we are people first and as we know from the multitude of accounts and communities on LJ, people have a lot of different types of issues to discuss. Is it alright to have just one community to include all of that? I mean we can discuss politics, society, religion, sports, entertainment, music, life, and so on and so forth. Wouldn't it  be better to have a bunch of communities under the overall India umbrella? Or to revive and group such communities where the exist? After all we don't have a single LJ_USA community.

3) Until (and unless) the above happens, is it OK to write anything - political rants, philosophical insights, random chitchat etc. in this community? If not what are the guidelines to stick to while posting to this community?

Glad to meet you all friends, look forward to hearing for you :)

Ciao!!!

People take their cows and friends for a stroll
in the morning and in the evening here.
They go for a walk along a tangle of racy hemp,
which has grown into trees.
It hasn't clouded already one's mind absolutely by its fragrance.
There is a childhood state here.
Just go and see, my friend.
Open your eyes and ears! Chalo!Chalo!

Hi Friends

Hope you are well.

While the judges at india_writing are hand-picking the best from the fantastic 1,052 responses for the Quick Tales Contest; the community is thriving with dialogue and creative works by its members. And in the meanwhile, we’ve been working at many other things too!

As promised, we have a series of attractive presents in the satchel :). And here’s introducing some of those initiatives to you:

·         us_election2008 – Introduced this past weekend, this is a LiveJournal partner community dedicated to the discussion of personalities that participate in, and issues that pertain to the impending US elections.  Of its many partners, Mint is the India media representative. The idea behind this community is for journalists to pose questions and thoughts to be responded and reviewed by LiveJournal users. This platform seeks to enable bringing people’s voice and opinion to the fore. Do check it out, and feel free to send us your insights and suggestions on the same.

·         bollywoodclub – In partnership with zoOm TV, this community has been conceived as the official blogging platform for their reality show by the same name. The format of the show revolves around strugglers with individual stories to tell. Their stories, via blog entries, video and images will be powered by Zoom on the LiveJournal Idea Bollywood Club partner channel.

·         india_travels – Our most nascent project, india_travels is a perfect pit-stop for anyone who has or wishes to travel anywhere in and around India. The community would serve those who have been somewhere and want to share their anecdotes, those who want to at some point in the future and are seeking tips; an adventure enthusiast looking for fellows like themselves as well any curious travelling mind too lazy for travel himself. For this community, we have partnered with Kunzum, and seek to instill some more fun through a travel contest soon. So check it out and let’s warm up towards that too. :)

You’ll keep hearing from us on the progress with these specific communities, updates, announcements, et al. But we’d love it if you also step in and tell us what you’d like us to work on – be it suggestions for these existing ones, or any other ideas that you may have.

The very purpose for lj_india is to share happenings and garner insights from LiveJournal’s India users, as well as those deeply interested in India. All your thoughts are welcome :).

Waiting to hear from y’all,

Manpreet

Hello all

The Quick Tales Flash-Fiction Contest submissions wrapped up this past week. We want to thank all of you for the great response to the contest. We’ve received a total of 1052 valid entries :)

As we speak, the Caferati editors are busily sifting through the entries to give us a short-list; after which the jury steps in to rate the short-listed stories and come up with a set of finalists, and then the winners. To all of you who submitted entries, good luck! Do share your feedback about what you thought of the contest.

That’s not it; we want all members to have a voice as well. Through a poll that all of you could participate in, we’d like to arrive at a special People’s Choice Prize winner. Do keep checking the [info]india_writing community for updates on that.

Even though the contest is coming to a close, the community’s journey is just beginning. LiveJournal intends it to become a new home on the web for great India writing. And it's up to you folks, the steadfast veterans as well as the founder members, to set the pace.

So, please post your original writing—any style, any genre—to the community for comments and feedback. And don't stop at that. Go visit the pages of fellow members of this community (you can find them by visiting the community's profile-page, and scrolling down to the "Members" section) and say hello, get to know each other, become friends; as well as share links to the writing community with your existing friends.

We had promised to you more and more India-centred activity on LiveJournal in coming times. And we are keeping that word! We should be back with an update on some of these initiatives real soon. Meanwhile, if you all are having a LiveJournal event somewhere, do keep us posted.

Have fun, and keep writing!

Cheers
Manpreet

HI Friends!

How goes life?

Well for us, it’s beginning to get exciting in this side of town :). You’ve all heard about the LiveJournal-Caferati Quick Tales Flash-Fiction Contest. The response has been great, and we are getting more and more entries by the moment. Have you submitted one yet? Oh and even if you have, why not submit one more, or two maybe! Unless you spam us by sending us the same story over and over again, we’d be this upbeat, and some more :).

100 of the selected entries stand a chance of getting published, not to mention the delicious cash prizes for the top 5. All you need is some imagination and an India address! But you’ve got time only till midnight, 7th of September, so tell us a quick tale and do it fast!!

Also, do help us spread the word…tell your friends, post it on your blogs, or push it on any other relevant communities that you may members of.

Until next time…when we’ll be back with the goodies ;)

So, you'll have seen the news, as we promised we have launched our first real India initiative - it's a writing contest with some pretty decent prizes!

We wanted to focus on an area which was core to LiveJournal and creative writing was the obvious place to start. We have developed this in partnership with Caferati, one of India's most popular writing communities.

You can find out more about the contest in our [info]india_writing community.

As you will see from the community page, we have featured some popular India communities. If you want to suggest others for inclusion please note them in the comments section and of course if you want to start your own India communities then you are more than welcome!
