Finding more translators.
Writing in English for Abe's sake :p

I commented on an ancient entry I found in ljtranslators, where someone was interested in translating LJ to Greek. Will see if I get a reply.

[info]pne, or anyone, really, do you have any idea how we could find more people? I don't mean to step on your toes, btw, just trying to get things moving a bit, I guess, because, even if I've started translating again, there are so many strings. *dies*

I have little experience translating and I expect my knowledge of Greek technical language is pretty crappy, so I won't be willing to spearhead it (too much on my plate as it is). However, I can still try to help.

Translating LJ isn't that hard, really. You don't need to know that many technical terms. It's pretty much a few LJ-related things (such as entry, userpic etc). So I think that you could easily deal with most of the stuff. And you can always ask for help or ask me to look over what you have translated.

So it'd be lovely if you could help a bit. :)

Responsible for all translating teams is [info]burr86. The Head for the Greek translating team is [info]pne, who is the one that can grant you translating privileges. The people translating are, well, me for now.

I'll need to look at a translators' FAQ first, though. But it sounds interesting and I think I can manage some rough translation if a better speaker can fine-tune things.

Sure, I don't mind at all having a look at your translation and tweaking it, if necessary.

There is the lj_translate community (which all translators should watch). There you can find some very useful info about how the translating interface works, even if it's pretty self explanatory. Also, you can check the already translated text (though some of it may be out of date - I haven't yet gone through everything, because, well, it's a lot).

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask!

Er, question: how do I put the accents on vowels in Windows?

Are you using a Greek Windows keyboard layout? Then you make the accents with the key next to the L (I think it's ";" on a US keyboard layout) followed by the vowel.

If not, what method are you using to type Greek?

At work, I installed a Greek keyboard layout, which I find the easiest way to do things; at home, the keyboard language indicator kept disappearing and so I removed all but the German layout -- to type Greek here, I start up SC UniPad, which comes with a bunch of keyboard layouts, including Greek, and then use copy and paste.

The free version is fully functional for only the first 10 minutes are program start; after that, you can't edit documents containing more than 1000 characters until you restart the program. So for short to medium-length translation items, that's sufficient.

Also, I need a link to a site with Greek computer vocabulary. My new vocab intake stopped abruptly when I left Greek school at 10, before I started becoming obsessed with the Internet. :P

My mother's going to be so thrilled I'm taking a renewed interest in the language...

Well, um. I don't know any place to find Greek computer vocabulary, to be honest. You could, though, post an entry with words you'd like to know etc and I'll give you a translation. Or email me or something. Whatever works for you, really.

And I think that [info]pne answered your questions about Greek accents. Also, another option is using Word's symbols.

Also on www.proz.com you can always ask for term translation or search in Kudoz glossary

No - I don't know any Greeks beside you, I think.

I'm not sure how many Greeks there are on LiveJournal, and of those, how many are even interested in having a Greek interface -- which may be the biggest problem.

Including Greek-born Americans/Australians/etc. may widen the potential circle, but I think it comes down to people who (a) speak Greek and (b) care about a translation (and (c) are willing to put in effort). I don't know how many of those exist, nor how to find them.

You can always use online dictionnaries, or ask me for help on some terms :)

I'm going to post a new entry in a while, explaining what you're looking for and how you can help, so, keep an eye for it. You may find out that you can help, after all.

Also, you can see the current percentage at this page: http://www.livejournal.com/translate/

Δοκίμασα να μεταφράσω μερικές φράσεις αλλά δεν είναι ενεργοποιημένο το save. Προφανώς κάπως θα πρέπει να πάρω posting access?
(Ε, μα φυσικά, θα μου πείτε...)

Μπορούμε να συμφωνήσουμε σε κοινές ορολογίες; Υπάρχει κάποιο σχετικό κείμενο ή ο κάθ' ένας μεταφράζει όπως του αρέσει;

Μπορούμε να συμφωνήσουμε σε κοινές ορολογίες;

"/translate/index.bml.table.langname") και τη μετάφραση που προτείνεις (π.χ.
