Scrapbook Photo Backup?
I would like to know if thee is a tool of some sorts to back up one's scrapbook? I have been searching for awhile and am wondering why there isn't one available from LJ at least.

Something like this, but more ambitious, was requested in this suggestion. However, it looks like nothing has been done about it yet. However, and since this community is also for client development, it looks like LiveJournal also has most of the server side of what you want already. See http://pics.livejournal.com/doc/protocol/ for ScrapBook client programming in general, and http://pics.livejournal.com/doc/protocol/tut.client.fetch.bml for exporting data from ScrapBook specifically.

That is the thing, the scrapbook community for fotobuilder has been closed and we are sent here with our layman questions. Since I am not a programmer I was hoping if something was being planned for laypeople to back up their scrapbook.

Maybe a suggestion or advice on some other application that might grab at least our photos to our computer's hard drive, even if there is no structure or galleries data saved.

I know the command-line client linked from the ScrapBook Clients page will upload or backup (aka download) your pictures for you.

If you're not already comfortable doing new things from the command-line, it requires some investment to set up, but afterward it's pretty straightforward to use.

I'm not sure if any of the other clients will move your pictures in both directions, you'd have to test them out.

So I would have to install perl on my xp machine, drop to DOS and and then run a perl script? Or do I need to boot to dos with perl loading in the config.sys and then run the script? I never have installed perl or have run perl scripts on my local machine, just scripts on a website and tcl programs in a shell (on a server) but that was awhile ago as you can tell by my question :)

There are so many clients to upload, but none to download or back up :(

Alright, I installed perl and ran the script, I was able to upload photos but the backup options give me the error "fetching export.xml from server" then the next line says "couldn't fetch export file from server".

I should add my command line was

fotoup.pl --backup

My .fotoup.conf is:

I have also googled livejournal fotoup.pl and I have read entries from years ago and no one seems to express having backed up anything. Or people have expressed giving up trying to get it to work. The only reference to it working that I could find was back in 2002 with Brad however the server's name was picpix.com

It seems like there's a cookie authentication problem (at the least). I downloaded my own .xml file from http://pics.livejournal.com/manage/export and saved it to the right directory, and then told the script not to try to fetch it, which helps, but it still can't get any of my images.

There's another post about it here, but with no comments: http://community.livejournal.com/lj_dev/2008/07/16/
That's what I get for suggesting something I'd never tried myself :)

In the short term, your best bet might be to get your own .xml file from http://pics.livejournal.com/manage/export and extract image URLs to grab some other way.

But probably some else has better ideas :)

I will be keeping an eye out for something that works better in the backing up dept. I am glad I tried and am happy I found a better way to upload through this client, so I must thank you for guiding me :)

Hey everyone, FYI, I've hacked up the fotoup.pl client to make it work with the current LJ authentication scheme, so it can now successfully back up your Scrapbook photos. Check out my entry with details here:

http://krellis.livejournal.com/231473.html

Enjoy, and please post in the comments of my entry if you have problems/questions/suggestions/etc.

Thank you so much!!!! I am getting the "MD5 of download file doesn't match, retrying." errors, but I will keep trying :)

Clients (ScrapBook as well as LiveJournal proper) are more often than not developed and supported by 3rd parties, not LiveJournal Inc, which is why asking here, where client developers are watching, is the best way to get pointed in the right direction (if something already exists that does what you want) or get the attention of someone who might be able to put something together that does what you want. (In effect, this is now where to ask layman "I'm looking for a client that has (feature)" questions, for both LiveJournal and FotoBilder/ScrapBook features and clients.

If you cannot use the command-line client someone pointed you to below, and no one else suggests something that works for you, your best bets are either to comment in the LiveJournal suggestion I pointed you to, or to write one of your own (http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=164).

Thank you I can try that. I know that it was asked before and was not sure if one would be allowed to subject something that is already posted about or pending on a decision.

I do like scrapbook and prefer it because it is with my live journal.

I have a ScrapBook client. When I had a go at implementing backup, I found that the Perl command line client support for this is broken. Given that someone actually wants this feature, I'll have another look at it. Not sure when it will be done, though.

I just backed up my entire ScrapBook - nearly 2700 images - completely intact, in a bit over an hour.

Did you have to change the securities to public to get your photos with this application?

Yes, which may be inconvenient if you have a lot of photos that are not public, but I only had a scant handful that were locked, so changing the security back was trivial.

I used the perl script that [info]krellis fixed :) so I got all my stuff even the private photos and filtered photos for friend levels.
