State of play on OpenID?
Hi all,

I was wondering where the LJ codebase was in regards to OpenID integration. At present, we're a sort of semi-consumer; you can log in with an OpenID identity, but not much else. Being able to tie an identity to an existing account would be a major plus, and an excellent step towards distributed identity management - bridging an identity with LJ-generated FOAF. Plus, does our codebase provide OpenID identities that can be used to log into other sites?

Cheers,

Earle.

Yes, you can use the URL http://earle.livejournal.com/ for OpenID authentication.

That's cool. As long as nobody else does. [kidding]

Thank you *so* much for linking to that discussion. It was really educational.

OpenID came out of LJ. Like it was invented here. I'd say we've probably got the best support of any platform.

you wish you had the best support of any platform...

I do wish we did. It would be very nice to have more control of where OpenID users may comment, and which OpenID users may comment where, for one.

I wrote a patch (login with your LJ OpenID, then go to the URL again) 10 months ago to give a bit more control over OpenID , and submitted it to LJ, but since then I've heard SFA except "will be looked at when we have time". It could just have been lost in the ether - LJ's gone through two issue tracking systems since then (was RT, then FogzBugz and now Jira).

Look at the suggestion [info]pauamma posted in the thread above yours -- to let someone log in to LiveJournal as, say, [info]loic by providing an OpenID (which you had previously tied to your account, e.g. by entering the URL in a field in your profile data) rather than with username "loic" and password "whatever". That is, having two ways to log into the same LiveJournal account: username/password, and OpenID.

It seems to me that LiveJournal would have to implement that in order to provide full support for OpenID.

Agreed.

(And that what as a really educational discussion [info]pauamma linked to. Well worth the 4 hours it took li'l old me to read and understand it all. =:o} )
