Current mood:accomplished

It's been a while since we've posted because we've been pretty busy with the Sponsored+ launch.

There were a bunch of us here that were holding our breath. It was a big launch for us, and forced us to get more infrastructure in place that will help us ship things faster in the future. I for one am pretty happy that we've launched it because even though I get a permanent account because I work here, my main squeeze did not. And the Basic feature set just wasn't that interesting to him. He wasn't in the mood to pay. (Why should he since I work here?) and I thought it presumtuous to ask for 2 *gasp* perm accounts.

But enough about me and my man. Let's talk about what part the design team played in this...

The team needed a crash course in how the advertisintg world works, and the advertising team needed a crash course in how LJ works. So [info]pmmarcov created a [info]lj_ads to talk directly to the LJ community and talked a lot with the LJ crew. Meanwhile, the Design team was learning the ins and outs of the world of advertising. Some things we learned (sometimes the had way)...

  • The IAB is the organization that sets the advertising standards. So when everyone agrees what the standard sizes and rules for advertising are, advertising agencies and companies create ads that meet those specs, and then sell them on a bunch of different sites (like LJ).
  • Even though there are a lot of ad formats, there's really only 3 main ones. And if we didn't provide a nice balance of the three main ones, we wouldn't be able to take on the variety of ads we would want. The three main ones are skyscrapers (160x600),  leaderboards (728x90), and the infamous box ads (300x250).That last one is really hard to work in without being obnoxious. There are different positions that make the ad more valuable. Advertisers usually are willing to pay the most for the box ad, and if the ad sits "Above the Fold" it's even more valuable.
  • There are other ways to get ads on a site. Special deals and sponsorship. But for the first release of Sponsored+ we needed to get out there fast, and the fastest way would be to use the main 3 formats.

So while [info]pmmarcov's team was busy working on who would be good enough to advertise on LJ, and setting up the ad server stuff, the Design team wrote up an ad placement style guide for how ads should be placed across the site.

Usability testing?
Nope. Not this time. Because, mostly when we ask people what they think of ads, they say they hate them. But then when you get out into the real world, they almost always seem to prefer ads to paying. So this was the kind of project where market research and focus groups do a better job. Instead of running usability, we designed in feedback links so that LJers could directly tell us what they thought.

After the launch
Lots of breath holding. We were all watching very closely, anxious about how the community would react. We got complaints, we got compliments, and we got reports of bugs. :) Our Support team has been giving us regular reports on what users are saying. We let things sit for about a week so that we could match the stats with the user feedback and figure out how we were doing.

The good news and the bad news...
So the good news was that people were upgrading, and liking it. The bad news was that not enough people were signing up. And here came our 4th lesson in the world of advertising. We need enough people willing to see ads on LJ to make it a big enough audience for advertisers to even be interested. For example, if we don't get enough people interested in computers to sign up for Sponsored+, then we won't be very interesting to any cool computer advertisers.

But there was a bright side to the bad news. Mostly people were not upgrading to Sponsored+ because they had never heard of it, not because they didn't like it. So we had to think of a way to get the news in front of people. Brad thought this was a problem for a lot of LJ's features. For example, [info]veroz's Navigation Strip is fantastic, and changes the way I use LJ is a good way. But hardly anyone knows about it. So Brad made a feature that tells LJers what feature they have access to, but aren't using. He called the project CProd. I called it Frank the Clippy. You'll probably see him around the site, exposing features to you in a non-intrusive way. One of his tips is that Sponsored+ exists.

We got our stats in on Friday, and CProd / Frank the Clippey is working!

So what next?

Bugs first. Lots of problems with how user's S1 customizations were broken by the ad level, so they had to drop back to Basic. There were also a bunch of ideas we had for giving users more flexibility in ad display that didn't make the launch. We're working on getting some of those things done too. But the bugs are first.

I hope this post was enlightening. If there's any part of the process that you're curious about, leave a comment, and I'll try to answer them.

I think it would be helpful to have a demo LJ account that demonstrates how the ads will be used, and how they can be customized or something similar. That might turn people on to signing up.

I think CProd/Clippy is the most annoying thing ever. I am especially annoyed with the way it shows up on all my free RPG accounts telling me to upgrade them to Sponsored+ so that I can spam my 1942 era RPG with zillions of 2006 ads including flash and graphics. I wish I could make it go away.

Hit the "view all" link and that'll let you remove a module from the rotation; we only have a handful of modules, which is why you're seeing the same one over and over and over again. (Eventually, individual tips will have a "don't show me this again" option, I believe.)

What browser do you use? I think I could give you instructions to make it go away using User Style sheets, as well. That might be less of a pain than going through and dismissing all the prods.

Non-intrusive? Really? Everyone who I've talked to is annoyed as hell by this thing and wishes it would go away. Clicking on the "View All" link takes you to a page where you can individually select which of the feature blurbs you'd never like to see again; can we not come up with something to make the CProd never appear again should we so choose? I get that it's a great way for people who don't know about these features to find out about them, but is it necessary to see it every single time you update? Surely once (or even twice) is enough and being able to turn it off once you've had your fill would be really great.

If you use Firefox, could you try this out and tell me if it works?

If you use another browser, tell me what it is and I'll try to find instructions on how to apply user style sheets to it.

I find Clippy just plain annoying, but not as annoying as the "Upgrade to Sponsored+!" advertisement I see on my login page even though I have a Permanent account, because I could at least remove the Clippy advertisements after clicking a few times.

Where all is CProd placed? Because I only see it on the "journal updated" page, which I only see for about 2 seconds per post (before I close it), so the other comments here (about how annoying it is) are rather confusing to me.

that page, the page after you edit your profile, and the page right after you log in. There might be others, but I can't think of 'em offhand -- they're all in places like the one you describe ("dead-ends", where there isn't any much other meaningful content usually.)

Is there any possible way for CPod to, you know, acknowledge account level?

I have a permanent account. I've been here since early 2002. I know what I'm doing, thanks. It's annoying beyond belief, and I rarely post from anything but a client.

Ha, I'm going to be different and tell you I actually like the cattleprod. :D The general idea is fun, and it doesn't show up often enough to be annoying. I just hope there were more modules, because only a few apply to me, and I mostly get just one module time after time... how about adding modules for more official journals, for example? I've also found myself wishing that I could tell the cprod to show me some modules that it detects as non-applicable - it would help me to remember them more often.

Yeah, I doubt that any of us will be sufficiently impressed by this pseudo-feature to want to have Brad's babies. Frank the Clippy? It's just goat abuse! And why must permanent and paid account holders be nagged to "upgrade" to the Spam+ account level? It makes no sense! It smells of quick hack that was allowed to go live before it was thought through.

As a paid user, I don't want reminders of, or any MENTION of ads on my account. I'm already paying for my site use; spare me the "let's line Six Apart's pockets more" prodding.

Mostly people were not upgrading to Sponsor+ because they had never heard of it, not because they didn't like it.

I'd sure LOVE to see the market research you used to come up with that assertion.

I like other people having the option for Sponsored+, although I have no intention of using it myself (besides testing purposes).

I agree that bugs with S1 overrides should be the top priority for improving Sponsored+, since there are fewer ea/free users who use custom S2 styles. S1 overrides are the common complaint about S+ from the people who actually use it, aside from the people who won't ever use it due to ads. I also know that it's impossible for staff to find all the problems with S1 overrides unless the larger community tests them; there's just too many test situtations... It's also worthwhile to tell advertisers that the audience for Sponsored+ ads is larger than the literal account numbers, since those people's friends will also see the ads.

As for CProd, I think it's a very good idea for any users who don't know much about the site, but could use improvements for different account levels and expert users.

  • Never show Sponsored+ (or any future Paid encouragement) to current Paid and Permanent users.

  • Add more topics. Off the top of my head, the official communities, volunteering (support, docs, dev), the Paid account level, interest searching, tags, current location, time zones, ESN (when launched), etc. And yes, I know these require coding and clever copy to check for current use. ;)

  • Add a "Hide all" option to the Did You Know page, to reduce clicking.

The reports of perm and paid account users seeing the Sponsor+ level is a bug. The only things that are supposed to be shown are features you have access to.

If you're signed in with a paid, sponsored+ or perm account, you shouldn't be seeing the Sponsor+ CProd, and it would be great if you could report the bug so that we can de-bug the feature.

I don't think it's the CProd that's the problem -- I think what people are saying is that the news module says "Upgrade to Sponsored+!" or whatever wording we're using, but it's a generic module that's displayed to Paid/Perm users as well.
