goodbye :(
As you may have heard, there has been a number of layoffs in the San Francisco office, including the entire design team. I just wanted to say goodbye and thank you to everyone who has been a part of this community. I know a lot of times, it seemed like your comments weren't being read or heard, but believe me, they were. I promise you, I read every single comment on any post I made (unless the comment was made months later), and read most of the ones to posts I didn't write. I even enjoyed (ok, maybe that's not the right word) the more vicious comments because it was proof of how much everyone cared about what happens to LJ. And that's something I'm really going to miss.

For a long time, the design team was just me. This year, [info]gregorykennedy and [info]lizlux came on board and a lot of usability improvements were being made. I was really looking forward to 2009; there are so many parts of the site I want to fix up—Memories (managing and deleting memories and keywords) and Manage Custom Filters (duplicating a group and inverting, easily separating out communities from journals, etc.) to name a few—and I really thought I'd have a chance to do it.

I am really sad to be leaving. I have been an LJ user for almost 9 years, and would have been an LJ employee for 3 in March. I don't think there are even words to express how much LiveJournal means to me, but I don't think there needs to be because this community is full of passionate users who know what I mean anyway. I don't know what will happen with [info]lj_design, if it'll be handed off to someone else, or if this is going to be it, but this will be the last post here from me. So thanks again, and goodbye.

<3,
[info]chasethestars

p.s. In the next release, the last updated timestamp on the profile page will be changed to be less exact. The date will remain, but the exact time will be gone. (If this change is reverted before then for any reason, please don't come after me with pitchforks.)

p.p.s. The link to beta the consolidated settings page was accidentally removed from the main site navigation. It'll be back next release (you'll have to re-enable it), but in the meantime, the beta settings page can be accessed at http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/index2.bml. Or it might be live by next release!

I'm sorry that LJ staff was cut, and I wish you the best of luck.

I don't know what to think about this latest move by LJ's current owners, but like hundreds of others today, I have archived my livejournal just in case something goes awry...

For 2008, it was thanks to the LJ Design Team that my opinion of the LJ admin improved. Upon hearing the news, my first thoughts were about this comm and all your efforts 'cause you guys have been awesome. Was looking forward to future projects and developments in that regard and now... D:

Thank you for all the time and effort and I hope things workout on the job front. While you may no longer be an employee, you're still a part of the community (and no matter how shitty stuff gets, I hope y'all stay)

*hug*

Watching you say goodbye to [info]lj_design is sad, but I'm glad that I know you, so this isn't a goodbye between you and me, and I get to see things get better for you soon after such a rough bomb. I think it's weird that my bitching about LJ has led me to getting to know such wonderful people like you, but I'm grateful for it nonetheless. You know I'm hoping for the best.

I'm really sorry to hear about the layoffs, especially since I was one of the ones bitching. It really sounds like you cared about the site a great deal, as do a lot of us. It impressed me that you took the time to address one of our concerns in your final post and that you wrote such a heartfelt goodbye to the people who were probably mostly a thorn in your side. I hope that you get a great job at a place you love even more than lj and that your next bosses don't put you in the line of fire the way that I'm pretty sure lj did to you here. From the timeline you included in your note, it sounds to me like you were responsible for what I liked about lj and probably fighting about the same things I was (I hope).

I do care a great deal. I was so ecstatic when I found out I'd be working on LJ, and for a long time, couldn't imagine doing anything else. I still can't, and have no idea what else I'd be *happy* doing for a living.

"...the people who were probably mostly a thorn in your side."
I'd be lying if I said reading through comments wasn't extremely frustrating at times, but really, I would have been scared if there weren't any complaints since to me, that'd mean people stopped caring and that's a lot worse. Also, the volume of negative comments had been going down over time and that was pretty amazing.

There were a lot of things I fought, sometimes it was hard to separate out being a user vs. being an employee. Didn't always win, but I fought.

eta: Didn't mean for that last part to sound like everything coming down the pipeline was bad. There were decisions I really liked too.

From the selfish point of view, I'm sad to see you (and the entire design team! *boggles*) go because you're one of us and I was so sure that with a few more comments, a couple more mock-ups and a cat macro or two we'd be persuading you to change some more stuff according to *our* needs.

From the unselfish PoV, I feel sorry for you and all the people who got laid off, especially for the ugly manner in which it happened. I hope you find a better and rewarding job ASAP. :-*

Thank you for all your work!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Stacey, you are more awesome than Chuck Norris eating a curry in a restaurant owned by Jack Bauer. LJ are fools for letting you guys go and things will just never be the same again.

All of you have put so much of your time, effort, love, sweat and tears into making LJ functional, user friendly and pretty to look at.

I would like to thank you all for having done a fantastic job, for reading all of the user comments and actually listening to user feedback. I wish you all the very best for whatever you go on to do. Hopefully you'll all continue to make the internet a usable and pretty place in some way or another :)

Holy crap, I didn't know the ENTIRE design team was included in the layoffs. :( :(

Aw man, I would have really been excited about a redesign of the memory system, especially, as well as managing custom filters.

I felt like the design team was often the portion of LJ's employees I interacted the most with, even if it was just through giving feedback. And I always felt that y'all cared a lot about us users and our suggestions, even if it wasn't possible to incorporate all of them.

It is sad to see y'all go. Good luck in the future.
