Alternative Name for Sponsored Communities... Forums?
Love 'em, hate 'em, or really hate 'em..... sponsored communities aren't going away.

But nobody (not us, not the companies) wants to trick you about what they are ... these companies want a place to communicate with you. Yes, with you. Not at you. If they wanted to communicate at you they'd make a website or advertise on a billboard. (which they also do) But they want a forum in which they can talk with you. Maybe you have no interest in talking to them ... that's fine. Don't go there.

But done right (which we haven't done yet), they can be good in two ways:

1) they give us money, so we keep going and doing things which you do care about,
2) if you care about the company, you have a place to talk to them, on a site you already use.

Sure, maybe you don't care about the current company(ies) which have sponsored communities, but maybe your favorite wonderful company (not an evil one like us), comes along and you actually would like to talk to them ..... then you might care.

Help us make it not suck. Asking for it to go away won't help, so give us something constructive ....

-- if we can rename it, let's rename it
-- if we can hide it better from you, tell us where (and we will hide it for Basic users... subsequent post coming on that)

Basically we screwed this up. The feature could've been great, but everybody thought, "What? Companies want to pay for LiveJournals to talk to their customers? Uh, sure.... we already have that!" But obviously we didn't already have it, because it needs more disambiguation loving.

So about renaming it...
I was thinking today about calling them "forums". As in, "a forum for companies to talk to its customers". The the icon could be a little greek forum w/ columns and stuff.

Or maybe "Sponsored Community" everywhere is enough, if we don't forget anywhere. And maybe still keep the forum icon.

Thoughts? We don't want you to think it's a trick. That's totally not the goal. We're also fine branding employees that maintain the "forums" too ... the more you know, the better.

Brad just does damage control....
And yes, I do only come out for damage control, but that's because I care about LiveJournal a lot... it's been my baby for like 7 years. The reason I sold LiveJournal, to retell an old story, is because I was too stressed doing LiveJournal alone (it's a ton of work), and I was on the verge of shutting it all down. I sold it to the least evil company I could find, for a lot less money than I could have if I had no standards. I was looking for help, and Six Apart's been great. They let me work on the things that interest me, and generally that's the more technical backend details ... the plumbing that makes LJ tick, not the user-visible things. But when I see the users in distress, I care and get involved with the community again to fix. Let's fix this together. We have a lot of cool shit coming down the pipe.... IM/Jabber integration, SMS, another round of ESN (notifications) improvements, etc...

More later
As Abe keeps saying, this is far from over. More later.

Please reply, but constructive, please.... it's a lot for us to read.

Not "forums". That's too close to communities and the idea of it being fan/member generated content and discussion rather than something run by a corporation.

Someone on an earlier post suggested a subdomain so that all sponsored communities would be immediately recognizeable by their URLs, i.e. http://sponsored.livejournal.com/scienceofsleep/ or http://corporate.livejournal.com/scienceofsleep/ etc.

Something related to the idea of a marketplace wouldn't be a terrible idea, I don't think. An LJ agora, even. [I suspect "agora" might sound too much like spin for some people, though.]

the first URL actually is a fantastic idea. They are still a community but recognizably different by URL.

I personally am not against the whole sponsored communities premise but as a compromise to those who may not like it, I think that would be a good idea along with a distinctly different icon..

Help you? No thanks. If we were talking Livejournal, then maybe, because Livejournal actually tried to listen to its consumer-base.

I don't want a sale-booth with a stranger behind it in my living-room, and my livejournal has been marketed to me as my home on the internet. Making ads will only alienate me from it.

They're trying to listen now.

Just because they're not doing what some people want doesn't mean they aren't listening.

They're already telling you you won't have this in your living room.

You did see that GJ already has ads on their userinfo pages, plus language in their TOS that lets them implement new ads without warning and with no recompense to users, right?

...if what you're worried about is ads on LJ, I mean, rather than just a knee-jerk response condemning change.

Stop patronizing us! This post REEKED of it. I'm entirely disappointed and disgusted at how this is going. Every post makes it worse and worse now. You have no clue what you're doing and just keep telling us to grin and bare it. We won't. We never will. We're annoyed, we're angry, WE PAY YOU MONEY TOO! I, as a paying "customer" find this to be wretchedly bad service.

We don't NEED "shiny" new things like IMs and stuff. That's what we have AIM for! Go back to caring about the users and stop dicking us around. I'm really getting annoyed now.

1) they give us money, so we keep going and doing things which you do care about
I give you money too and you haven't done anything I, or any other user, wants for ages. This is insanity, man.

Brad, and I am not trying to be a nag here, the most telling phrase in your post is "I sold it to the least evil company I could find..."

That isn't a slam on you, by the way. We *EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US* know that this is a corporate driven, PROFIT driven world.

You have to sympathize just a little with us though... just like realizing that Santa doesn't exist, I really won't be President and fairy tales are make believe, the reality of ads in our little world is a crushing blow.

*sigh*

Maybe there should be no more official statements that something will never happen, be done here, etc. That only leads to disappointment and people feeling let down or worse.

Forums is usually used to mean message boards. Sponsored communities aren't that. Why not just call the Sponsors?

Maybe they can be great, but there will be mistrust or skepticism by many. Personally, I have no interest in getting that sort of thing here. If I want info about a movie, book, product, etc, I go look for it and I get the info from many sources. I might put it on a technorati watchlist which I subscribe to, or I'll do a once only read of something, but it will never be something I'll put on my friends list. That's for... well... friends. People, individuals, whose LJs I enjoy reading (or who post nifty icons or help for customizations or yes, official LJ news). That's it. That's about as much as I can stand.

I really worry about the next time, the next step, when someone offers a lot of money for LJ to do something else, like slip ads onto the My LJ page for logged in paid users. Or add a sponsored ad on the navbar which I do love and had wanted. I just worry that this won't stop with sponsored communities and features (that I also won't use).

Ha ha, I can't wait for the next damage-control lj_biz post in which they promise never to do anything like this, and then six months later you've got ads on your paid-user My LJ page.

company talkback communities? that's lame but something along those lines... the word "sponsored" means "those people who put all those damned stickers on those nascar drivers jumpsuits" and if that word could be dropped it'd be fantabulous. ugh... it's like walking a hair strung between two buildings...

company forums...
grrr... something that moves the perceived focus of the thing from the "company" part and to the liverjournal ordinary users.

i'm still drawing blanks, but i think you're looking for something that says "hey livejournal person, if you like a company or maybe have problems and want to be able to talk directly to them, you can use this!" and NOT something that says "hey company, come hawk your wares at our users!"

clear as mud?

I have no naming suggestion. I do not, yet, object to the forum name as it at least is a different word.

As far as hiding it from me, a paid user, I really, really don't have any desire to see it turn up on interest searches. Unless you create a better search function that will give the choice of Opting In on including the corporate journals.

Yes! I also suggested this - possible a box we can check in preferences IF we are interested in seeing forums or whatever they should be called - that way, if people are truly offended by them, they don't have to see them unless they specifically go to the "forum" itself. And people who are interested in seeing them can opt in.

yeah, reading these comments brad (after i posted mine) and if you can at all shift the focus of these communities off of the companies and back to the users i'd say go for it.

we should be able to put this back in the opportunistic light for the lj'er that it should be and get it away from the previous negativity. instead of "company's have this opportunity to talk to you" we need to get it to "you have the opportunity to talk directly to a company, cut through the red tape and tell them exactly how you feel about their services and or products!"

if i had had more coffee today i could be more lucid...

There is definitely a problem at the marketing/copy level for these posts; they show too much ass -- disjointed, frustrated, hurried. I'm a writer -- I do this sort of thing for a living; you have to take the time and present a face to the public; that's not happening here at all.

And absolutely: it looks ridiculous to frame the post in "we care about you, the user" language, then refer to "giving the companies opportunities to talk to you." The words are at odds with themselves.

I'm against it, on a fundamental level, though I do like the assurances that, as a paid user, I won't have to see it. The problems, though, are:
1) They tend to say things and not mean them [no ads ever!]
2) They also seem to have no idea what this really is, or how it will work, so chances are, these assurances aren't worth anything.

The most constructive suggestion I have, beyond "listen to the users" is don't post another thing about this -- since you claim it's not going away no matter what -- until you really understand it and have a vision. And maybe hire someone with marketing/advertising experience to handle your posts, as well.

If they are here for us to choose to go to them, and not any unwanted spam from them then there should be no problems. I still say the little green monopoly house :)

I can see this working for software companies such as Game Info/Sales and Support and Applications (small utilities/screensavers/computer fun stuff) types of community.

The community would stay due to software updates/patches/upgrades.

Thanks for the update on the progress.

I don't mind what they're called, but I think a format like a user focus group is better than the whole subversive advertising sort of thing. Something like, for example, a soft drink company saying in a post 'Here's free printable coupons for x product! All we want in return is some comments about the taste and what you'd make better' as opposed to something like that CourtTV billboard/blog subversive thing.

The [info]scienceofsleep thing was trying too hard to fit in with a normal LJ comm. I want to know exactly who is behind a sponsored comm. If I wanted to talk about Harry Potter, I'd go to one of the many large user-run comms. But if the publisher of Harry Potter wants to know if us users like the format of the book, want bigger or smaller text, etc. then that's for a sponsored comm.

Sponsored comms could actually be pretty interesting, if the sponsors treated the users as people and not immediate ways to make profit. LJ makes announcements on a regular basis and talks to the users - it makes me feel like a person and not just a random user. MySpace just goes ahead and does things and doesn't reach out to its users. I want sponsored comms that give me an LJ feel, not a MySpace feel.

Love 'em, hate 'em, or really hate 'em..... sponsored communities aren't going away.
Because you care more about the potentially massive profits from the corporations than you do about the measly revenues you get from paid accounts.

these companies want a place to communicate with you. Yes, with you. Not at you.
From what I've seen of the first "sponsored community," there's a whole lot of fake journals engaging in company ass-kissing than there is any real communication. This is a joke. No, it's not a joke; it's a flat-out lie.

1) they give us money, so we keep going and doing things which you do care about,
See, this just doesn't even make sense. They give you money, and that's going to give you incentive to do things that we care about. Yeah, right. We're not stupid.

2) if you care about the company, you have a place to talk to them, on a site you already use.
There are two things here. One, if I care about the company enough to want to talk with them, I'll go to the company's website and look for the little link that says "Contact us." Two, I don't use this site so I can talk to corporations. I use it so I can talk to my friends and to other interesting people. People, not corporations.

but maybe your favorite wonderful company (not an evil one like us), comes along and you actually would like to talk to them
If a company that I like decided to come to LJ to push its products and/or services, I would be highly irritated and would probably not do business with them anymore. I'm not brand-loyal enough to continue to do business with a company that crosses that line. There are plenty of other places for me to get bombarded with advertisements. This needn't be one of them.

Help us make it not suck.
Help me make my dog's shit not stink.

I was thinking today about calling them "forums". As in, "a forum for companies to talk to its customers". The the icon could be a little greek forum w/ columns and stuff.
No, no, and no. A forum is a place for individuals to get together to share ideas. It is not a place for a company to try to push its products. Perhaps you could call them "markets," or "marketplaces," or something like that. But don't degrade the word "forum" by calling these advertisements "forums."

We're also fine branding employees that maintain the "forums" too ... the more you know, the better.
Brand the employees, brand the fake journals, brand everything. We can't trust you anymore.

We have a lot of cool shit coming down the pipe.... IM/Jabber integration, SMS, another round of ESN (notifications) improvements, etc...
Don't care, frankly. I don't need or want this stuff. You know what would be nice? If I could change the security settings on my years-old journal all at once, instead of having to go in and manually change the settings on thousands of individual entries. But I forgot, you guys are too busy sucking corporate cock to have time to make features that people really want.

They aren't communities. They aren't forums. These companies don't want to talk to us at all--I have a feeling that if Coke started up a "sponsored community" and I posted a comment complaining that I did not sleep for two days and that my eyes dialated to the point of blindness after drinking my first Vault, they would delete my comment or otherwise find a way to censor me rather than actually address my consumer concerns. It's advertising. You can at least be honest about it, since you seem so set on selling LJ to these corporations.

I don't see what the big deal is. If it brings in money so things can get better or whatever so be it. This is a way for companies to get feedback from consumers. It isn't going to clog my friends page unless I add them. LJ has said they won't allow spamming. If in the long run people don't buy into it and don't subscribe to their groups they will go away. I'd like to see any of the complainers do a better job. I have been here for awhile now and I remember when there was loads of downtime and I haven't seen that in a very long time. To Brad and the rest of the LJ staff, I think you are doing a heckuva job and I have nothing to complain about. Thank you for bringing me this service and for trying to make things better. Keep doing what you are doing and don't sweat the people complaining. If it is that big of a deal let them find somewhere else to do their complaining, because people like that will always find something to complain about. Progress takes money. Period.

Can I have your internet babies?

Seriously, people are acting like this is the fucking apocalypse. Holy crap, having sponsored comms show up on a search page doesn't degrade the quality of written journal content from your friends. Unless they are bitching about aforementioned comms.
