how a sponsored community is different
Okay, one of the first things we wanted to address is all the issues relating to sponsored communities. A lot of you are (very understandably!) upset about this, and I think it's partially due to confusion about how things are going to work, and partially due to us screwing up some of the implementation. (And, yes, some of you hate the idea entirely. We've heard you, and we're going to try and work out a compromise so that everyone can get a little of what they want, even if all they want is to be left alone.)

What makes a sponsored community different than a regular community?

Basically, nothing. :)

They're different in that sponsored communities are highlighted both on the main LJ homepage and in interest searches, to both Basic and Plus users. (We'll talk about Basic users seeing them and how we're going to fix that problem in a later post.) The sponsor might also want to run regular ads on the site, through the existing ad rotation, so they'll have that option available to them. They do get access to paid account features; after all, they are paying us to advertise on LJ. And the obvious: they're run by representatives from that company, with a bit of help from some of the LJ staff.

Besides that, they're just like regular communities. In many ways, we're actually going to be a lot more aggressive about holding them to a certain standard. We're writing up a list of "behavior guidelines" that we're going to ask all our sponsors to agree to. It's still making its rounds around the office to make sure we've addressed the biggest issues that have come up, and we'll post it here once we finalize it.

In particular, some of the concerns we're going to clarify:
  • Spam and community invites
  • Visibility in interest searches
  • Concerns about access to user data
  • Fears of censorship (see also: fandom)
  • Getting usernames
  • Fake accounts
  • ...

So ... can't they create the community for free, like normal?

We've always allowed people to engage in a little bit of "commercial activity" in their journals -- if someone knits sweaters for gerbils and wants to sell those, we let them sell those in their own journal. We don't want to prohibit you from doing that; that would anger a lot more people. However, we do prohibit larger companies from doing this -- companies that obviously turn a profit of at least a million dollars a year (we're not going to be auditing you :P) aren't permitted to just set up a community and profit from creating a community here. By requiring that they go through us, we'll be able to hold them to higher standards, so you know what to expect.

The distinction between the regular community icon and the sponsored community icon isn't clear enough

Thanks for the feedback -- and special thank you to those of you who offered up alternative icons! It seems changing the color isn't distinctive enough (and I'm inclined to agree with you guys), so we're going to come up with a different icon entirely. We'll let you know when that's ready.

More later, probably tomorrow, etc etc. Keep an eye out. :)

Oh well, right?

If some people want to make use of these, more power to them. As long as people who want nothing to do with them don't have to have anything to do with them, they have nothing to complain about.

Not that it'd stop them from complaining anyway.

Judging by the member list of [info]scienceofsleep, quite a few. I'm guessing some of those people are there just to keep track of the first sponsored LJ community and don't really care about the actual subject.

Besides that, they're just like regular communities.

Arggh.

No, they're really not, and this is what has people so upset.

Regular communities are created by fans, people who are genuinely enthusiastic and want to share their love with other (real) people.

Sponsored comms are created by people who are paid to do so (or maybe they're unpaid interns?) The [info]scienceofsleep example is proof enough! You want to tell us that this isn't exactly like what it appears to be -- socks set up to mimic real LJs for the purpose of running and promoting a corporate entity?

Can you really not see why this is bothering us?

Bad formatting on my part aside, I think you all can at least take comfort in the fact that there are a lot of people here who love LJ -- who use it regularly, who are passionately attached to the concept of it, and who are willing to pay to maintain it without resorting to ads and corporate sponsorship.

We're acting this way not because we're trying to be pains in your asses, but because we love this place and we're scared about what's happening to it. We criticize because we care.

Speaking for myself, at least. Please continue to take us seriously.

I would argue that the fundamental purpose of a sponsored community differed from regular community. Regular communities are places for people with similar interests to come together, to comment and share thoughts. Sponsored communities are, from what I understand, places for corporations to promote and advertise products, be it blatently or deceptively (this movie brought me and my father closer together! *gag*).

I'd say that's a major difference, and I'd really hate for my community of people who love the idea of boybanders having sex with each other to be confused with a place for some multi-million dollar company to try to weasel more money out of LJ users.

Trust Issues
[info]ex_cath560
2006-10-03 03:04 am UTC (link)
The girl(?) who posted that has said she's a real user - the way this was announced has led to people thinking she's not and due to one almightily banjaxed bit of communication she's had her existance questioned and a hell of alot of (understandably) angry LJrs taking it out on her.

And that's the heart of the issue, the way all this has been handled has eroded user trust which is one of the main things LJ is based on, trust and friendships - if you can't be sure the people you're talking to are who they say they are (which is a leap of faith in it's self on the internet) why stick around?

And if LJ can go back on one promise what's to stop them going back on anything they say from this point on - I'm not saying they will do but the questions going to be set in peoples minds now and for quite some time.

TBH if we are stuck with the whole sponsored 'community' thing the first thing to go (imo) after the similar icon should be the community part - they're not communities so shouldn't really be labelled as such.

I'm not sure that this answers any of the major questions, aside from vaguely hinting the issues exist. Is this the long post of explanation? If it is, it doesn't even begin to do the job.

"They're different in that sponsored communities are highlighted both on the main LJ homepage and in interest searches"

Highlighted or bumped to the top in interest searches. Loathe to give you that idea if you hadn't come up with it on your own, but that's what popped in my mind. Can't decide if that would be better (segregated) or worse (given higher priority).

Finally, you allude to "fandom" but don't adress it at all. Not satisfactory. In fact, your response, "n many ways, we're actually going to be a lot more aggressive about holding them to a certain standard. " implies that everyone else should shut up and be glad that you haven't been strict with them. Putting aside the truthfulness of that statement, can you guys PLEASE hire a professional community relations expert to write these things without continuing to offend everyone?

Er, no, no really, they're not. A community full of people paid (or contracted) to be enthusiastic about something is not the same as a community of people who actually are enthusiastic about something, as is already becoming painfully obvious over at [info]scienceofsleep.

But I will be eagerly awaiting your post addressing that list of concerns, which covers most of mine where sponsored communities are concerned.

To the best of my knowledge (and we have tools for checking that a user isn't a sock puppet), all of the posts you see there are 100% authentic. We have no evidence that the maintainers of [info]scienceofsleep have paid anyone to be excited about their community, and we'd probably get cranky if they were doing that. If the comments there are coming off as fake, that probably has to do with the user's writing ability and nothing to do with the leadership of the community.

The absolute biggest concern I've seen is that of users being censored by LJ. Fandoms, fan sites, etc are a huge portion of the LJ population. Why won't someone address this?

What about censorship? You say you're going to clarify the concern this with the "sponsors" but that tells us nothing. When are you going to clarify it to US? If your users are unhappy, there will be no one for the sponsors to advertise to.

Finally, I really hope this isn't the "long explanation" post. This explains nothing. This is another "Yes, we've heard your concerns and we're still going to shit on your face" post. Will someone please actually address the concerns, rather than saying that you've heard them? We know you've read the concerns, we just want answers.

I have had Doubleclick (and many other ad networks) setting tracking cookies while I was browsing in a test Plus account. (In a browser cleaned of all cookies before the experiments and only loading LJ pages during it.)

You (LJ/6A) now find yourselves in an impossible situation.

You have decided to do something that is likely to make some people upset, angry, apprehensive, or all three.

If you had handled the introduction of this new thing carefully, some people would have been upset, they would have complained civilly and either left or gotten over it, and life would go on. See also the original offense of the removal of the social contract, and the introduction of the ads in the first place.

But you didn't handle it well. So now you have a huge number of extremely irate users, all of whom are demanding a complete reversal of all of these changes, and loudly, and not going to take anything less.

But you've already taken Warner Brothers' money. And I'm sure you are pretty far along with the whole SMS/Amp'd thing, as well. So you're stuck. Even if you wanted to do the right thing and give the users what you promised them (no ads ever), you can't!

As I said, it's an impossible situation. I don't envy you.

...This really answers NONE of our questions. What happened to that "big long post" you've been working on for the last few hours? I finally thought I was going to get some answers, but all I got was more spin, more of the watered-down talk that we've been getting for the last few days, more stalling tactics. I don't appreciate being taken for a fool. Like [info]st_salieri and [info]jewelianna stated, there is a BIG difference, and we can see right through you.

I reinstate my previous sentiment when I say if I wanted to know more about a product, I'd visit the official website. Or punch it into Google. If anything, having them shoved down my throat is going to keep me AWAY. Reverse psychology at it's finest, just not with the intended result.

You know, I really have to point something out, it's been on my mind for the better part of the night.

What purpose are these sponsored comms serving if everyone ALREADY wants to filter them out and not even see them? I doubt that's in the plans of these corporations. I don't really see them benefiting much on a site where they are not welcome. Likewise, if I were one of these companies interested in a sponsored comm and I saw THIS kind of reaction, I'd probably back out of it, rather than piss off the people I'm trying to target with my product.

Like someone in the previous post stated, it feels like someone's tearing down a perfectly good neighborhood to put up a tacky strip mall. THink any people in that "neighborhood" are going to want to visit a place that took their community away from them?

I've been a user of this site pretty much since it's inception, under various usernames and account tiers. I was really excited about the new changes up until now, like the new themes and the tracking features and whatnot, so much so that I overdrew my bank account to get another paid membership. But this is just a slap in the face, and a betrayal of everything LJ stands for. I've been really patient up until now, but I'm sick of being strung along. I, along with so many other users, WANT ANSWERS. And if you really cared about your users, you would have supplied us with more info by now than "Stay tuned, and look at this pretty icon!." Tch.

I sat down and actually thought about it...

As long as they're hidden from paid users, to be honest...I really don't care whether they're here or not. As long as they're hidden from me on the main page, in interest searches, and they don't interact with my journal in anyway...I really don't care. If I start seeing them, I'll stop paying for my account, but until then...you've still got my money.

Thanks for keeping the userbase informed.

I think the big argument is is that they WON'T be. They'll still be in interest searches and we as paid users will still see them.

So I get to pay to be marketed to? I don't know if I like that idea. But, oh well.

And yes, thanks for the info LJ/6A

I'm thinking it might be good to do an approximation of the number of posts that you guys will be doing on this subject, like "This is post 3 of 7 regarding sponsored communities" or whatever. A lot of people seem to responding in a way that suggests they think that each subsequent post that gets made is the final post on the subject and get upset when their concerns are not addressed, when apparently these concerns are going to be addressed in future posts. Stating that there is more to come at the bottom of each entry apparently isn't clear enough.

One last time, the icon can be a little house, green like Monopoly and it would seem like a little shop. That seems friendly to me.

I really appreciate the time you've taken to respond to our concerns and am relieved to hear that limitations on corporate sockpuppet journals and fandom concerns will be addressed soon.

Since you're changing the icon anyway, please consider changing the name of these marketing "communities" as well. Community seems a wholly inappropriate description of an advertising journal run by a corporation. Thanks for all you do. :)

See, here's the thing. They shouldn't be called "paid" journals/communities, their statues should be "sponsered" or "corporate" so we really fully know, in all areas of their community info, that they are not real communities. They shouldn't even be called communities, but that's another grievence entirely.

I want to know if it's possible that these companies can't "phish" around for information on our profile pages, like or AIM screen names, e-mail addresses and our text numbers. They could so easily turn that aganist us. They shouldn't be allowed posting access in any place BUT their communities and the "mantainers" of those sponsered comms should be INDENTIFIED as corporate puppets users. There has to be a LOAD of difference between THEM and US.

I have a ton of concerns over this STILL. I'm still relatively unhappy and unsatisfied. I know you guys are trying your hardest, but I think a lot more can be done. I love LJ, please don't botch this up.
