new community icon
I have a really, really long post about sponsored communities that we're still working on, but we wanted to go ahead and post an announcement about one of the changes we made already. A lot of people brought up concern about being able to distinguish between sponsored communities and regular communities. We were already planning on changing the little community icon, but we didn't actually do that before we posted the announcement, and I'm very sorry about that.

To that end: when you link to a sponsored community, you'll see it listed with a green icon (that is, you'll see sponsored_comm instead of community). This icon will also be used in interest searches (more about those in a subsequent post) so you can scan through the list and immediately identify which communities are sponsored and which ones aren't.

More to come: separating them out on people's list of friends on the profile page (where there aren't icons next to the usernames).

More more to come: We'll be posting about other changes and answers to your questions -- stay tuned. And point your friends here, if they want details.

Wikipedia suggests an answer, as ever!

The metaphor doesn't stretch outside countries where our currency is habitually not green in colour. Taking that attitude to an extreme, though, would require the community icon to have an overlaid ¤, and I would idly wager that the solution proposed would confuse forty times fewer people. That crazy ol' generic currency symbol hasn't really caught on in wider usage, somehow.

I appreciate that you're trying to communicate with us without all of the business rhetoric.

About the icon change: I wish that there as more difference between the two icons than just the color, which doesn't really stand out that much. More design should go into it.

I'd suggest a skull and crossbones or a emoticon making an "ew" face, but I'm sure that wouldn't fly with the sponsors.

There are currently no controls in place, as far as I can tell, to stop companies from sockpuppeting here. [info]scienceofsleep is rife with sockpuppets, based on an examination of the user info of the community members.

I opened up two support requests asking about policies in place regarding sockpuppeting and never got an answer.

Will there be any kind of a filter available so that paid users' interest searches do not return sponsored results? And secondly, will there be any kind of naming convention applied to sponsored communities (to make the difference clearer and avoid overlap with user communities)? I understand you may already have answers to these questions planned for the next post, but I wanted to make sure my questions were clear.

I'll try to say something constructive here--you do seem at least a little like you're listening, and I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt. But the sponsored community icon needs to be a little more different than that. A different shape would be good, and something that's effective for color blind users should be taken into account.

I'm glad that you're listening - or at least saying you are - but I'm going to reserve judgement until we see what sort of things you folks have decided (and hopefully the decisions truly are based on what the user base wants). Thank you, though, for at least letting us know that things are sort of being talked about over there - I had a fear that this would all just be ignored.

Now, to look forward to hearing the rest of the concerns addressed. Hopefully I will be able to gain back at least some small part of the trust I lost in LJ.

And as an addition - I still really wish that the sponsored "communities" would be nixed, but since it doesn't sound like that's a possibility, my expectations for the editing of the sponsored communities are very high...

While I appreciate the effort I think a more noticeable difference between the two is going to be needed. I'm not colorblind but even I have a bit of a hard time telling the difference in color.

Still waiting for an answer on what happened to the social contract which is further undermind by these latest actions http://web.archive.org/web/20040401175244/http://www.livejournal.com/site/contract.bml

If I may quote: "Our Promise to You

We at LiveJournal try to ensure that our service is as pleasant as possible for each user, so we've assembled a list of promises we will keep.
[...]
Stay advertisement free
It may be because it's one of our biggest pet peeves, or it may be because they don't garner a lot of money, but nonetheless, we promise to never offer advertising space in our service or on our pages."

PS: a discolored community icon? shit, as if that is obvious. I'm not colour blind and would overlook that on occasion.

I'm guessing that means you're not listening to the masses and abandoning this hair-brained scheme all together. Lovely. And, for the record, just because your terminology irks me, I'm never going to link to a sponsored community. I shudder at the thought.

Look, I'm just really frustrated, and disappointed. I've paid you guys a lot over the years, and I expected to be treated as a loyal customer, not someone who could be pimped out to friends for profit. That's what sponsored communities feel like: you're pimping out users to your partners. I feel cheap and used.

This post is disappointing because it implies that we're NOT going to see that hoped for 180 turn and abject apology - which I guess was unrealistic to hope for anyway.

I'm really concerned about fake corporate users on the site. That disturbs me deeply. Will those concerns be addressed? Will they have their own $ / green head / whatever icon? Or at least clear identifiers in their info-pages? Witch hunts in sponsored communities to Find the Corporate Sockpuppet are totally uncool, but it's already happening right now.

There has, up to now, never been any reason why a corporate marketing department couldn't whomp up a sockpuppet, friend a bunch of people with similar interests, and post a gushing comment about product X/movie Y/band Z in the most recent public post of each one of those journals. In fact, it's happened, and long before sponsorships or ads came around. Sponsored communities are a separate (related, yes, but separate) issue, and insisting on lumping the two together makes it much more difficult for LJ to hear and respond to user concerns about either.

I think it would be extremely helpful if you changed the SHAPE of the icon as well, and not just the color. I'm not seriousy suggesting the tacky green dollar sign that some other people did. But something other than just a color change would be nice.

You can tell the difference between an RSS feed and a real comm at a glance, because the icons are so different. This is a very good start and makes me happy, as it addresses the issue of sponsored "comms" showing up sneakily in an interest search. A more distinct difference in icons would be even better.

I understand the need for advertising, especially regarding a site this size. But I'd like to bring up two concerns that seemed to be the most prevalent in the last entries:

1. Banner ads and popups are one things. They admit that they're ads, but these sponsored communities are seemingly paraded as REAL communities with REAL people, but are infact, staffed by sockpuppet accounts. Firstly, this damages the trust that I, and many others here, hold in the Livejournal community as a whole. Secondly, it is insulting to me that these corporations, and the members of the LJ staff would believe that we are so gullible that we would think that these attempts are genuine communities.

2. As a paid user of two years, I do not wish to see these ads. As long as these sponsored communities are filtered away from paid users, like myself, I will not mind too terribly. If, however, I do an interest search, and find sponsored communities in my results, I will refuse to renew my paid account as a result of this doubledipping.

Hopefully, these are two issues you will address in your meetings.

Lost count of how many people suggested a dollar sign already, will add my voice to the pile. Let's put these "we're open to alternatives" and "we're listening" theories to the test!

I also think there needs to be something clearly labeled on the community's userinfo page. [info]scienceofsleep has "This LiveJournal Sponsored Community" in the "About" field, but are they required to start with that? If someone hadn't been nice enough to put it in the bio, there would be nothing distinguishing it from a real community. Of course, the more bright and obvious the banner or icon, the better, but even putting it as a text entry you'd have to specifically look for to not miss (like "Account Type," perhaps, which currently just says "Paid Account") is better than nothing.

Yes, it's an absolute requirement that they make it clear in the "About" section and in the layout of the journal itself.
