we're listening!
I know we haven't gotten a chance to answer all the concerns you raised in comments to the previous posts in this community, but I'm just posting to say: we're reading your comments, we're listening to what you have to say, and we're changing things based on your feedback.

The entire LJ team met this morning to discuss this, and I'm personally very happy with the results. We think you will be too, but we'll let you decide when we post those announcements over the next few hours and days.

Keep an eye out, and I'm sorry we kept you hanging this weekend.

And, yes, for the record, we unanimously agreed not to post any radical announcements on a Friday night. :)

More seriously, though, thanks for holding a meeting. I'm still reserving judgment (and the possiblility of a return of my automatic payments and gifts for family and friends using LJ) until these announcements are made.

Well, you'll excuse me if I'm still worried. I'm sure you thought that we were going to be happy with the sponsored communities in the first place.... Sorry, but you guys lost a lot of faith in your judgement. Its going to take a while to earn it back.

I'm still worried, but it's good to hear that LJ is listening to it's user base still (so it seems) and not to the $$$ the corperations have.

I appreciate that you are listening to your users, but I am reserving my judgment for now until I find out more. This whole issue of sponsorship has put me very on edge about the future of livejournal, and I think you are going to have to work hard to regain the trust of your userbase. 'Sponsorship' (read: advertisements) raises a lot of secuirty and other issues for the users of this site, and it is somewhat short-sighted not to have anticipated the uproar this would cause. I really hope you do the right thing and act according to what the users of the site want, but I know that this is also a business, and as such, we should all probably expect to see a rise in corporate activity. I am strongly against the proposed 'sponsored communities', but what I have to say is nothing new. As you can see, thousands of users disagree with this move.

Glad to hear you're listening though, and thank you for informing us. I hope that the changes will be pleasing.

Other issues haven't raised much of an uproar
[info]foxfirefey
2006-10-02 09:51 pm UTC (link)
Well, there wasn't an uproar when the privacy policy got changed to allow third party tracking cookies. (Oh yays, Doubleclick cookies! JUST WHAT WE ALWAYS WANTED!) There really wasn't all that much of an uproar when one of the ads managed to get malware through LJ's security measures. And this has been the first uproar to really happen since Sponsored communities were first introduced way back on September 6th. More uproar happened over the NavStrip stuff.

There was some uproar with the news about adding the Plus level, but it's been drowned out by the "hundreds and hundreds of thousands" of people who are now Plus users.

Well, at last count, a few thousand of us have the following questions:

1. Does LJ stand by its policy of not selling our private user data with third party companies, including any company that "sponsors" an LJ community?

2. Is LJ going to listen to its user base and NOT go ahead with this idiotic policy, since the reaction was so overwhelmingly negative? I mean, the over four thousand comments you've gotten in the last two posts on [info]lj_biz should show you that, right? Anyone? Hello?

3. If you go ahead with this stupidity, what controls are going to be put into place to prevent employees or agents of companies that "sponsor" LJ communities from contacting LJ users proactively? You know exactly what I mean, to, so please don't pretent you don't.

WE know that the way sponsored communities will raise their profile on LJ is to datamine the publically viewable user data of individual users and figure out a potential market segment. Connect the dots a little, and see where that gets you. That means that employees of said companies can create sock puppet journals and start inviting people to join their cool new comms. THAT'S UNSOLICITED CONTACT.

3. And what about recourse if a company misbehaves on LJ? Hmmm? What if a company defrauds LJ users? What recourse do we have? What's the policy, where are the procedures delineated?

I asked all of these questions to support personnel and GOT NO ANSWERS.

Didn't you guys THINK of any of this?

For those that are sick of LJ letting itself be astroturfed:

Twenty one pages of comments and counting!

Don't sweat it.

Personally I'm happy with the bang I get for my buck, and recognize that implementing anything will result in someone being unhappy.

I actually got quite the kick out of some of the people running around screaming OMG ONOZ!!!

I posted an analysis in my LJ if you care to read it.

My theory is that sponsored comms, particularly those that overlap fandom, are doomed to failure.

Thank you, I look forward to hearing more about these results.

I want to add, it has been pointed out to me that the original post did, in fact, suggest that the sponsored communities will have an icon of their own, and wish to apologize for participating in the avalanche of "YOU BETTER GIVE THEM A DIFFERENT ICON" posts.

Are sponsored accounts seriously going to have that green community icon-thingie? Am I the only one that sees this as a problem for colourblind people? Specifically Red/Green colourblindness, which is the more prominant. To be honest, short of a "No sponsored communities on LJ" announcement I doubt that the irate mob will be placated. Also, how would the fandoms all over LJ be affected? Because if they are, I see a mass movement of people to another journal, or back to the mailing lists. Not a threat, just an observation, since people, oddly enough, like the fandom they are in as it is and do not want to be censored, or shut down.

I have a feeling JournalFen will grow by leaps and bounds if the sponsored community thing isn't sorted quickly.

I agree with the problematic nature of the icons as well. The icons need to be completely different, not simply different colors. Even if they were black/white rather than red/green, at the size they are they'd been difficult to differentiate depending on the resolution of your monitor.

I appreciate that you've gone to the trouble of having a meeting. I, for one, do not have a problem with sponsored communities really but I just have concerns over where my personal info goes to and how this will play-out in terms of fan communities and such. I really appreciate that you are taking our concerns seriously. With the confusion I think a lot of users were feeling like no one was listening and that they had no recourse to use in order to weigh in on changes.

Change is something that has to happen or we will never grow or move forward. It is when people are given incomplete or confusing information regarding change that anger ensues. The efforts of 6A and LJ in response to the out-cry are encouraging but I, like many others, reserve final judgement on this until the results of said meeting are shared. LJ is a business and has to do certain things to survive- I get that and I do not begudge LJ this in anyway, shape, or form. All I want in this, though, is to not feel like I'm being talked down to or wonder if my personal information is being targeted or hoping I do not get in trouble because I participate in online fandoms through LJ (for which I make no money and just do as a hobby and to enjoy interacting with others).

Thank you 6A and LJ. I anixously await news of your meeting.

The heart and soul of LJ are its paid, active users. Not the eleven million free accounts that are opened and never used -- the 100,000 or so people who pay their money and post on a regular basis.

We do this because LiveJournal is special to us. It is a community.

When corporations can call their websites "communities", well, that breaks LJ. It makes us distrust the whole community concept.

I hope LJ will get rid of ads. I hope they will listen to their paid, active users. I hope they will stop trying to attract emo kids who want Shiny Free Stuff.

If LJ needs more money to stay in business, then please, just ask us for more money. Eliminate the "sponsored" user level and charge $10 a year for a limited paid journal. Charge $60 for a regular paid journal. I'd give you guys $60 a year.

I hope LJ will realize that its niche is being the Mercedes Benz of blog sites: expensive but not flashy, very secure, and elegant.

I'm suspicious and wary. I'm willing to give LJ a chance to earn the trust back, but it's not going to be given easily. Honestly anything other than a total 180 turn accompanied by a serious apology for this whole debacle is probably going to fall short.

I don't think it matters when they make a post, if they can rethink what they're saying before they say it instead of just letting the first thing they think of come out.
