Sponsored Confusion
Bleh. Sorry, everybody...

There's some messed up communication going on internally and to you guys. Ignore lots of this. I'm sorry that I haven't been paying more attention (or really that lots of us haven't been paying more attention). (Un)fortunately, we prefer to hack on the new stuff, and not spend a lot of times with the sales department. Our bad.

Here's some clarifications:

  • sponsored "whatever" are ads -- don't worry, we (at least most of us?) realize sponsorships are the same as ads. and we remember which account levels see ads and which don't. For clarification for outsiders:
    • Free / "Basic": limited ("basic") features, no ads.
    • "Plus": more features, ads.
    • Paid: even more features, no ads.
  • paid users won't see sponsored stuff -- ignore the previous post. paid users won't ever see ads. that's why you paid, and we're not in the business of pissing off paid users. (just in the business of writing misleading posts to paid users, apparently... *sigh*)
  • SMS feature level --- SMS is a Plus and Paid feature. It costs us money to send and receive text messages, so we can't give it out for free. We'd lose too much money on it. But because enough free users will (presumably?) want it, we're letting you optionally use it, if you agree that you recognize it's a Plus level feature (Plus == ads), and thus for that part of the site, you see ads. But if you're a Free (er, "basic") user and don't want to see ads, don't use SMS and don't see ads.
  • Slippery slopes, boiling frogs -- no kidding. That's all our biggest fears. We bring it up a lot.
  • Sponsored communities -- don't look at them if you don't want. We try to label them everywhere as sponsored, but if we don't, let us know and we'll fix. It's a bug if they're not labeled (like on front page and interest search).
  • ....
I'm sure I'm missing stuff but I'm late for something and have to run. I just wanted to post this now instead of waiting until Monday for every to discuss it.

Don't worry, there's not as many evil people here as you might think. Clusterfuns like this one are caused by poor communication and rushing to get things done, not because we hate you and want to kill the site. But whenever this happens (and it's happened a lot, not just this time), we change things so it doesn't happen in the same way, for the same reasons, in the future. So some good might still come out of this.

More later when I know more, or if there are more major complaints/questions I forgot to address.

Update (7:52pm): just got back, haven't had time to read all comments yet, but wanted to apologize for possibly indicating Denise was in any way responsible for any of this. It's definitely not Denise's fault. There were just a lot of people acting and talking independently without as much inter-group communication as was needed ... it's hard to single out any root cause on this, but it's definitely more a communication/structure problem than a personel problem. Sorry, Denise.

and we remember which account levels see ads and which don't.

Except that Basic users DO see ads, and not just on the pages of Plus users. They see the sponsored communities on the front page, even when logged in, last I checked.

Thank you.

The sponsored communites are advertised right on the fucking hompage. That's not "don't look at them if you don't want" that's "we're shoving them in your fucking face and giving them preferential treatment over user created communities" Fuck that.

I still say HELL NO to this corporate bullshit.

You need to pay more attention.

We love LJ. We don't like all this new crap you guys are FORCING us into.

You need to stop making these kinds of changes without thinking it through and without being clear in what you intend and in what you say.

You promised us no ads -- but now you've got ad-account users, and this sponsored communities thing.

You guys really really really need to stop and think about this sort of thing before you do it, and you need to be more communicative with your users if you don't want us to throw fits about things we don't like.

I don't want to see ads.

EVER>

And I don't want to have to opt-OUT of it.

I don't want your nav bar, and I've opted out of it, and I STILL see it. This does not give me confidence in your ad-plans.

I am not particularly fond of your little thread tracker or those other new features -- and I haven't yet figured out how to turn them off in my journal. Trust me, as soon as I can figure it out, I AM turning it off in my journal.

You need to slow down and listen to your users. The fact that so many people have commented means that this particular post you have is NOT the only place you have problems. You popped a cork here. Take the time to read those comments and address them.

Will there be an option where paid users don't have to see sponsored communities appear on the interest search? I'm a paid user and I don't want to see corporate communitites anywhere. Thank you for clarifying, though, that you understand that sponsorship is advertising and for restating that paid users won't have to see ads.

I will be eagerly waiting for new information on this issue.

Slightly OT but I'm curious, are there going to be more phone numbers added for voice posting any time - particularly some numbers in Europe? I can't see using the SMS feature myself, but I would make voice posts if I didn't have to make a call to the US to do it.

I want an answer to this too.

Also these questions:

If a sponsor wants a certain community name, but it's already taken by a fan or real user, will it get taken away to appease the sponsor?

If we have icons or images that reflect badly on the sponsor will they be taken away or banned?

If a community is specifically an "I hate (insert company name/product/movie/actor/actress/singer here)", will it be deleted or censored?

How much influence will the sponsors actually have?

Hey, y'all got slashdotted about this. Luckily the top post on lj_biz is now this (as if anyone on /. ever clicks on the article)_).

As long as attempts to spiff up the old features I depend on don't render them unusable, and as long as I don't see ads anywhere on the site when I'm bearing a paid-up login cookie, I'm happy.

Clearly-labelled astroturfing like [info]scienceofsleep is fine; it's not as if studios aren't producing blog-design packs and icons and whatnot for their movies already, and if there's money in it for LJ, I can't complain. Just as long as they don't come bearing deals that require you to crack down on authentic fan communities for the same thing.

This is my concern. And for anti-fan communities. Or the adult-fan communities. Brad does some great damage control up there, and I thank him for it, but this is one fear that I don't see addressed that I really really really would: Sponsorship vs. content control and restrictions. Including user-pics.

Still, Brad, let's have no ads and go back to the model of "paid users support only the features we use and let the rest go to hell".

You know, the olden days.

You'll have some sort of clarification for us about what access sponsors have/will have to user data, right?

Right?

I'm a little confused about what's in it for the community sponsors, exactly. I mean, they've always had the ability to create a comm here same as any individual, right? And I'm pretty sure they're not paying you a bucket of money for that little "sponsored community" banner. So what are you giving them, LJ? Our email addresses? Or is it the right for them to have content they don't like removed from our journals?

Damn straight. Corperations don't pay money for nothing. They sure as hell don't pay money for what they can get for free. Are they getting preferential bandwidth? What if there's already a [info]harrypotter community? Does Warner Brothers get to take it over?

Something's rotten in the state of Sixapart.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong, dude... on at least a couple counts. Basic users do see ads, and paid users are going to see sponsored by $foo...

At least, unless something's changed because of this backlash, that's how things are.

That's reassuring, but it's pretty late in the game. We'll need more:

* No corporate spam comments advertising sponsored communities. That had damned well better be in their terms of service: if I start to see shills trolling through the interests lists and posting comments linking to their sponsored communities, I want LJ's assurance that they will be hunted down and deleted.

* An easy way to identify links to sponsored communities.

* No corporate interference in fan communities.

* No ads on profile pages. If I (as a permanent user) or any of my readers, paid or not ever see the words "sponsored by" on my user profile without my putting them there, the resulting firestorm is going to make this little flamewar look mild.

YES. This is my main concern. I could care less if ads are hanging about in sponsored communities or on the journals of people using Plus, since I won't see them being a paid user and all, but I am concerned about the influence that sponsored communities and those sponsors could have on fandom, which is a big thing here on LJ.

Generally, big companies should be happy about fans and fan communities, because it gets the word out about their products/shows/music/whatever and generates them revenue, but sometimes they miss that aspect, and shut people down anyways.

Sponsored communities -- don't look at them if you don't want. We try to label them everywhere as sponsored, but if we don't, let us know and we'll fix.

Label them on individual users' profile pages then, or make them invisible (on profile pages) for paid/permanent users. I DO NOT want to click on a community name in someone's profile and then find out it's sponsored.

Ditto. The current userinfo page breaks the Friends section down into Friends, Communities, and Feeds. A Sponsored Community category should be added to this, and paid/permanent users should have the option of not being shown that category.
