Invitations for members have begun, and Brad is the first confirmed member. The elections for the LiveJournal representatives will begin in the new year.

...This looks to me like student government: something created only to placate the grazing herds and not actually do anything.

I think you should at least try and not be so translucent.

Um, your average student governments are modelled after local community boards, of which this resembles more. And livejournal is privately owned, so there's no requirement to do anything to provide us with democratic power. Even a "translucent" effort is considerate.

This can work.

For it to work, though, it must not be, as one poster above put it, the LJ analogue of student government. The advisory board must be listened to, even when it's not what LJ management might want - and must be seen to be listened to.

If it's a whitewash, or a rubber stamp, it's pointless.

LiveJournal Advisory Board will publish and then update on a regular basis a clear a set of aims and values addressing such vital issues to the community as: privacy, security, community standards, legal, political, religious and access (usability, technology, interoperability, Open Source, Social Graph, etc.);

Many people are already disillusioned with LJ's more recent policies. I think they'd further alienate a lot more people if they didn't include actual LJ members.

And if they don't, what kind of credibility is the body going to have? Something tells me those without any experience with or attachment to LJ are going to be pretty worthless when it comes to advising how best to develop the service.

Please do something about the new adult policy situation. One of the communities I watch went for that and now every post has a cut stating it might contain adult content. I have to click the cut link to see what the post is even about. Sometimes, I have to go through a procedure of verifying I'm 14 or over (I'm more than twice that).

Every user should be familiar with the LJ cut. Many communities do what they can regarding "adult" material, especially fandom communities involving fanfic. As an owner, I am wary of implementing the new system in my community because of the way I've seen it done. My members know they have to use the LJ cut and clearly label any fanfiction with the appropriate rating. Having to go through a cut just to even see whether or not the fic is their 'thing' or not is going to be frustrating.

How about a check box where the poster can check to say that yes, this is definitely adult content. There should be no "might be" about it.

Thank you.

I agree with the other comments about how this could be good...or could be an empty gesture, depending on the powers given to the Advisory Board.

Also, not mentioned here is how WE get to interact with the Advisory Board. Other than electing, them, that is. If they're supposed to represent the users, then what say do WE have in what THEY discuss with you guys? Email access to sound off about something we don't like? Or do we just get to vote and then the whole thing goes behind closed doors and we're just told about how the Advisory Board is working for our interests...somehow?

I think that this is a good idea, but I dislike the idea that the Advisory Board might take the place of actually communicating with and getting the opinions of the whole LJ userbase. Even though some of my opinions are in the minority, I still want the chance for them to be heard, even if they're NOT held by the few elected folks on the Advisory Board.

I'm not comforted by the inclusion of "religion" in the set of "vital issues" that LJ needs to address. Why religion? Why does LJ need an advisory board to create a set of "aims and values" regarding religion?

Further, just inviting people you pick to join the Board doesn't seem like the best of plans. No one's going to care about a Board filled with strangers that they had no option to choose or vote for. If the LJ community doesn't feel any connection to the Board, they're not going to care one whit what the Board does.

Does SUP have policies regarding religion or politics? Are they a 'Christian company' or something?

Blogging platforms should be just that-- platforms for blogging. Anything else is impeding free speech. The masses will take their message elsewhere. So I don't understand why religious or political concerns would affect a platform for blogging.
