Offer: Trying to work nanotechnology or biotechnology into your work of fiction? Need to learn more about how research works? Seeking out background info on the currently available tech?

I will read up to 50 pages (double-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman or Courier) of a fiction work and critique it for scientific accuracy and plausability, starting from what is currently known about available technologies. I can also offer critique based on how a scientist character in your book is likely to behave. The 50 pages need not be continuous, if, say, you have several short stories in progress.

OR

If you're trying to get your head around a particular scientific sub-field, concept, or paper that falls under the heading of nanotechnology, biotechnology, or chemistry, I will write a clear summary of the answer to your question of up to 10 pages (double-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman), which can be broken up in any reasonable manner (i.e., a ~5 page summary, then several 1-page responses to further questions). I can include journal/book references in my response, or not, however you prefer. I may ask you some questions about your education/interests so I can tailor the response a bit.

Background: I recently received my Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My research involved examining the response of cells to nanofabricated substrates. I currently work in the field of nanobiotechnology, in a job that involves talking to scientists working on a variety of projects in the field, so I have a good sense of the breadth of what's going on right now. My undergraduate major was in Chemistry Education, so I have a firm basis in explaining science to non-scientists.

Particular expertise in tissue engineering, self-assembly, semiconductor fabrication/processing, polymer and protein synthesis and behavior, surface chemistry, science education, and instrumentation. Any questions, just ask!

Delivery: Within three weeks of getting your manuscript or question. Offer good for a year, so if you haven't finished something yet, no problem.

Contact: tchemgrrl at hotmail

Minimum bid: 15$ 10 little dollars!

Edited to add: A small, goofy example of me explaining a paper I coauthored, describing it to a general audience (entry from 7/13).

[info]mer_moon and I are offering to thoroughly critique up to five poems from the winner within a month of their receipt. We can correspond with you beforehand to determine any specific kinds of feedback you're looking for, and will touch on the following (partially gakk'd from [info]bloodied_eden, because she put it so well):

• Points you need to work on
• Points where you excel
• Suggestions/advice on how to improve
• Recommendations as to markets we think would be a good match to your work.

Qualifications: in addition to writing poetry ourselves (and reading very eclectically) we co-edit a quarterly journal dedicated to fantastical poetry, called Goblin Fruit. Many of the poems we publish have received Honourable Mentions in The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, edited by Ellen Datlow, Kelly Link and Gavin Grant, and eight of the poems published in 2007 have been nominated for the Rhysling Award and are being showcased in the 2008 anthology. We're both workshop-savvy, and I hold a Master's degree in English Literature from the University of Ottawa.

ETA: For all that fantasy/mythic poetry's what we're most used to seeing, your poems needn't be fantasy at all.

Contact: amalmohtar at gmail dot com

Delivery: via e-mail, one month from receipt of the poems (and after confirmation of donation)

Starting bid: $10

Alright, this is my final contribution to the community. :3

Offered: For a full year I will offer you critique on your artwork (be it fanart or original, digital or natural media). Critique can be as in-depth as you want. I had a few years of art school at one point, so I'm well aware of how to give a good critique.

Critiques will include as many of the following as you wish:

• Points you need to work on
• Points where you excel
• Suggestions/Advice on how to improve (this comes both from personal experience and from classes I have taken)
• Draw overs (where I take the drawing into photoshop and draw in another layer to illustrate how things can be improved)

• And I'm open to other requests so long as they are related to actual critique!

Qualifications: 2 years of art classes on both a beginning and intermediate level (the latter taken with some more advanced students). I have also been drawing and otherwise practicing and improving my own artistic techniques for around 8 years now.

I am versed in using Open Canvas 1.1 (the freeware version) and Photoshop. My preferred natural media is pen and ink, but I've picked up a few techniques for other media (like charcoal) in my classes.

Please note that I am not by any stretch a painter, so I will not be able to give as much advice to that particular medium.

You can see my art gallery here to gauge for yourself if you feel my level of ability would be useful to you: http://some-art-bum.deviantart.com/

Contact: susukeru@gmail.com

Delivery: Starting from the day this auction ends for a full year I will make myself available to you for critique and/or advice. That's until July 15, 2009.

Minimum Bid: $10

High Bid: (As of July 9 3:55AM EST) $10 [info]ladynadiad

Offer #1 - I will critique a fanfic of no more than 50,000 words and no less than 20,000 words in any of the following fandoms: Twilight, Harry Potter, any Sarah Dessen, Meg Cabot, or Tamora Pierce worlds, One Tree Hill, or any other book I may have read. (Please ask. I'm a teen book reviewer so if it's a popular teen book/series, I've probably read it.) I will work with any characters but I'm best at: Twilight: Bella/Edward or Bella/Jacob. In Harry Potter: Harry/Hermione, Hermione/Ginny, Remus/Tonks, Remus/Sirius, and Harry/Ginny. In Tamora Pierce: Daine/Numair, Alanna/Jon. In One Tree Hill: Lucas/Peyton, Haley/Nathan, and Brooke/Lucas. I will do all other pairings in those fandoms though. However, the rating can NOT be higher than PG-13!

I will make notes on characterization, the plot, setting, etc. as well as the writing. I've been a fanfic writer for many years and I've critiqued a few fanfics.

Delivery:  Add one month for every 10,000 words. It'll probably be done before that but I'd like to give myself some time.

Min. Bid: $5

Offer #2 -   I will critique a novel written for teens of no more than 75,000 words and no less than 30,000 words. I will comment on every aspect of the novel, including characterization, unrealistic scenes, the plot and setting, and the writing. I will accept every genre except for strict SF and horror, though I prefer drama or romance.

Qualifications: I am a teen myself, as well as a teen book reviewer, writer, and avid reader. I read about 7 books a week so I can point out exactly what makes a good story and what doesn't. I know what is cliched and I can give suggestions to make it better. Since I write myself, I understand what it's like to write a book and I can give suggestions on that. Also, since I'm a teen myself, I can tell whether or not it's going to be real to teens.

Delivery: Please add one month for every 10,000 words. It will most likely be done before that but I want to give myself time, as I will have other novels to critique.

Min. Bid - $10

Offer: Working in a fandom set in New York? Want to send your characters to the city? But a little confused about subway lines or the differences between avenues and streets, or where the city divides into east and west? Want to make sure that your plot is actually workable in the city?

I will read a story/manuscript for city-specific accuracy, help you create the right setting if needed, suggest places your characters might live/frequent/abhor, give you some common New York phrases/traditions/complaints, as well as just giving you a thorough beta (if you want)!

Qualifications: Eight years as a resident of the city, having done everything from taking advantage of every free thing I could find, visiting multiple parks & playgrounds, working at 168th & B'way all the way down to City Hall. Been on every subway line in the city, know the best places to be "alone" or in a crowd, the horror of hearing "service change" while you're on the subway, how to commute to Jersey, PA and Connecticut. I have never been on a Chinatown bus though - you're on your own if you want to deal with that. ;) I've worked in the city government, in the department of education, I graduated from Columbia, took classes at City College, have a sister who graduated from NYU and friends at every other school you can think of. I am most familiar with Manhattan, probably the Bronx next, then Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.

Been to loads of restaurants, up to date with Broadway and political issues (also going back 8 years), completely addicted to all sporting events, been to all the touristy things that no New Yorker will admit to having done, trained for the marathon in Central Park before getting injured, know about churches and synagogues, museums, airports, and the history of the city.

I am also willing to send photos of places (over e-mail) if you really have no concept of what the Park looks like in winter, or spring, or a particular place. I can prove Manhattan is an island!

If there is anything specific you need to know about that I don't know, I can always take a ride and check it out. (The joy of an unlimited metro-card.) I'll even find an apartment for your character if needed.

I can also check for any discrepancies between the east and west coast - for example, no one from California is going to be complaining about the cold during the summer in New York. Bonus weather whining at no cost! ;)

This is open to any fandom or original story, because everything is possible in New York!

Delivery: Three to four weeks turn-around time, depending on length, need, and schedule. Offer open until needed (so multiple drafts, etc. are fine). Please feel free to ask any questions, dates, etc!

OFFER: A critique of up to 50 pages of fiction (original or fanfiction in any fandom) from the perspective of a sex worker/knk practicioner. You don't have to provide me with actual pages if you don't want -- I'm equally has happy to talk through your ideas with you.

While I do not make an effort to keep any of the above information particularly private, I will expect your discretion with any details we may discuss.

About me:

I have worked as a professional dominatrix, have strong familiarity with other parts of the sex industry and also been both a lifestyle submissive as well as a top in my personal life with members of both genders. I can explain everything from safety issues in a scene to business logistics of a house of domination to the types of people one meets in the biz. When it comes to kink, everything I have personal experience of I have done both as a dom and a submissive and I have worked with both men and women in both roles. Stuff I haven't done, I definitely know where to ask to get the finromation you're looking for.

I am also a published writer of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, so I have at least somewhat informed opinions on writing outside these issues as well.

Note to potential bidders, LJ and all other powers at be: This advice is not intended for use in anything but fictional ways. I am not condoning or encouraging illegal behavior. Please be aware of the laws in your own jurisdictions -- practices that are legal or at least grey area in mine may not be in yours!

Delivery: Will turn pages around within 2 weeks or receipt. Ongoing discussion, etc. to be discussed.

OPENING BID: $10

Offer: I will read your story or novel extract of up to 20,000 words (including any notes), OR your notes alone up to 10,000 words, and provide a thorough critique from a linguistic standpoint, covering the structure of any invented languages, the linguistic history and language contact situation of your world, and the social ins-and-outs of language use. I'll read original fiction or fanfic, though in fanfic, I can't promise to make canon language use make sense. :-)

In addition, if bidding reaches the Buy It Now price of $100, I will work with you to devise the rudiments of up to two invented languages, to include phoneme inventory, syllable structure, morphology and basic morphophonemics, sentence-level syntax, and whatever semantic oddities are important to your story.

Qualifications: I have an MA in linguistics, and I've had at least 'Structure Of'-level instruction in Spanish, German, Modern Icelandic, Old English, Old Norse, Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, and Hittite, and a glancing familiarity with a few others. I used to teach a class on linguistics in SF and fantasy. And my favorite chapter of Lord of the Rings is Appendix E.

For a general taste of my language neepery, try this essay.

Contact: ellenfremedon [at] gmail [dot] com.

Delivery: I will have a 3-5 page editorial letter within two weeks from receiving your materials, barring major and unlikely crises.

If you get the language construction option, I will consult with you over email or IM within one week from receipt, and deliver my editorial letter and a basic grammar within a month of that consultation.

Offer: If you have an AU set in the 1940s, or your fandom takes place in Korea during the war, or about writers in WWI, and you don't want to spend a ton of time doing research (or just want your research checked), this is for you.

I will read a story/manuscript for historical accuracy, as well as just giving you a thorough beta (if you want)!

Qualifications: My areas of expertise are almost anything set during/before any war. I am better with history set outside of the US (modern Euro was my concentration), but do know American history fairly well (especially war/foreign policy/the 40s). I also know a lot about South Asia, Russia, the Pacific, and Japan. (My knowledge of cultural and historical information is time-specific, as I'm really all about context.) Post-French Revolution is where my strengths are, but I've taken so many classes, I can almost do any period. I also am very well versed with all genocides, including the Holocaust (Jewish focus and country-specific), and Rwanda, the history of antisemitism, Zionism and the "inter-war period" world-wide.

I have a degree from Columbia in Modern European History, and have worked as a research assistant on various manuscripts, including the upcoming manuscript from Carol Gluck on the conflicts between history and memory. I wrote my thesis on the history/memory conflict in France regarding the French-Algerian war. I can read and write in French, and sincerely LOVE history (it's my free-time passion).

This is open to any fandom or original story, as history is everywhere!

Offer: Do you have a story that deals with a character and some psychological issue? Ever wondered what the side effects of PTSD really look like? Have a fascination with characters who are psychiatrists, or see one?

I will read a story/manuscript for psychological accuracy, and can suggest ways to support what you want to have happen. (I will also not be afraid to tell you that it is highly unlikely that would happen, but suggest ways to make it more plausible.)

My Qualifications: My areas of expertise are PTSD following major trauma (9/11 was my training ground) in children and adults, severe low-functioning autism/MR to high functioning aspberger's, psychopharmacology, interaction between schools and students with needs, eating disorders, borderline personality disorder, self-injury and suicide. I am particularly well-versed with cognitive behavior therapy, as well as dialectial behavior therapy.

I am have the equivalent of a MA in psychology from Rutgers-NB and worked at Cornell Weill Medical College/New York Pres, Columbia-Presbyterian, and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. I will eventually get my clinical Ph.D. but am currently working with ABA and verbal behavior as a speech therapist. I have worked on inpatient and outpatient units, and have come in contact with almost every possible illness. Last summer I went the APA convention and learned A LOT, and also took a workshop with Dr. Marsha Linehan on DBT (she is the founder).

I'm also very familiar with the history of psychiatry/psychology, so if you story isn't set in the present, no worries! I can tell you what terms would be used by doctors, what was in the different versions of the DSM, (what the DSM is), pretty much anything I don't know, I have books on and know tons of people in the field, so your questions will be answered!

I've offered this service to others as a "mental-health beta" and they have always been pleased with the results. (You can ask!)

I know Battlestar Galactica, M*A*S*H, West Wing, Alias, the L Word, Gilmore Girls, The Office, any reality show, the Sopranos, In Treatment, Criminal Minds, Bones, Sports Night, XF, the Prentender, One Tree Hill the best . . . oh, I pretty much know a little about everything. (the fic that I have written can be found at www.sparkgirls.com/tulips, but I know a lot more - for example, I have worked on more than a few S&A stories despite having never seen a seen an episode of the show.)

EDIT: I am MORE than happy to do the critique on original work, or movie/book fandoms.

Offer: Does astrology play a part in your original or fan fic?

I will read up to 50 manuscript-formatted pages (double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman or Courier) in total of one or more works of fiction in which Western astrology plays any role, and critique it for accuracy and plausibility of its astrological content.

OR

I will advise a writer who wants to use any aspect of Western astrology in a work of fiction, including preparing a horoscope for up to three characters or other entities (or two horary charts) and assisting the writer with integration of this information and its interpretation into the text.

I have been providing services as an astrological consultant for 34 years. In addition to basic natal astrology – the calculation and interpretation of natal horoscopes and the interpretation of transits and progressions of the natal chart throughout the lifespan of a person or other entity, I am also familiar with the following branches of astrology:

Synastry: the analysis of relationship potentials between two or more persons or entities based on the comparison of their natal charts.

Electional astrology: the selection of the best possible time to perform a specific action, hold an event, begin an enterprise, etc.

Medical astrology: the use of the natal chart, transits and progressions to assist in diagnosis of medical conditions.

Horary astrology: the interpretation of a synchronicitous horoscope to answer a specific question by a querent on any topic; this is astrology's version of a Tarot reading.

This offer is limited to fiction set on Earth, and characters born on Earth after 1900. It is also limited to fiction set in modern (i.e., the last 50 years) or future time periods.

Contact: Either comment here or email me (email in my user info).

Delivery: To be negotiated once we discuss your project and determine the exact nature of the critique/advice requested. However, I promise to make meeting your requirements a priority.

Minimum bid: $30.00 USD

Offer:
I will read up to 20,000 words of a work of science fiction and review it for scientific plausibility. I can also suggest scientific (or pseudo-scientific, in case the technology doesn't currently exist) explanations to support your plot.

My Qualifications:
I am a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Engineering, and I have 4 years of lab research experience in developing technology for improving human health. I can offer you advice in chemistry, biology, brain sciences and engineering. If you need help in another field, ask me in comments. I may know someone with expertise in that area.

Fandoms I am most familiar with are Torchwood, Dr. Who, Harry Potter and The X-files. If your work is fanfiction in a fandom I'm not familiar with, I'll ask you for some background resources.

I can advise you on issues like:

- Genetic Engineering: How easily DNA can be changed; What it can and cannot do.
- Evolution: Why an alien looks the way it does; What kind of species could live on a certain type of planet.
- Brain/Computer Interfaces: How characters can interact with a computer through a direct link with their minds.
- Brain Chemistry: How hormones or drugs can change someone's behavior.
- Medicine: Fictional diseases, both physical and psychiatric, along with symptoms and treatments.
- Medical Technology: What kind of life support or prosthetic devices a human or alien might need; What a vaccine can and cannot do.
- Chemistry or Materials Science: What kind of substance an artifact is made of.

I've been really impressed, intrigued, and tempted by others offering their unique expertise and experiences, so here's mine.

I am a medical marijuana user and holder of an Authorization to Possess issued by the Government of Canada under the federal Medical Marihuana Access Regulations -- meaning it is legal for me to possess and use cannabis in Canada.

Of course I am not going to explicitly advocate anything illegal on LJ, but I'd also like to do my part to help counter misinformation and inaccuracy.

Details and a picture )

Minimum bid: $4.20 ~_^

Buy It Now: $42.00 -- July 13 update: One BIN claimed! Two still available!

I will accept up to three separate buy-it-now claims or higher bids. If the bidding does not go that high, only the highest bidder will win and receive the offer.

Important disclaimer: This offer is posted with the permission and support of our fabulous mods, but the mods and I are NOT condoning any illegal behaviour by the making/allowing of this offer post, nor by the delivery/implementation of it.

This offer is intended for display purposes fictional use only. Winning bidders must take full responsibility for what they choose to do with the information I provide.

Be aware of the laws in your area. Be aware of how our discussions of your fic or fictional ideas may look to your parents, roommates, cops, Big Brother, or anyone else who may ever come across logs on your computer. Don't be stupid.

Extra-additionally: Anyone who has a personal interest in medical marijuana for their own health issues, how to become a member of a compassion club in Canada (the one I belong to serves members from all over the country), or how to apply for federal Authorization to Possess in Canada -- feel free to contact me at no cost (though it would be very cool if you could donate $1).

Copying wholesale from [info]kate_nepveu, whose offer is here.

Offer: I will read up to 50 manuscript-formatted pages [*] of a fiction work or of a description of a fictional scenario and give you my opinion of it from a legal perspective.

I cannot give you legal advice and am unlikely to be able to nitpick specific details of an existing legal system (see below for the exceptions). I am a lawyer: I graduated from Yale Law School, clerked for a Supreme Court justice and a court of appeals judge, and practiced intellectual property law before going into teaching. I can give comments on Supreme Court and federal court of appeals practice, and on civil trial-court issues. I can also give general comments on constitutional and family law. Other areas, please ask.

Offer: I will provide a book review (samples of already-published-novel reviews here) for ONE UNPUBLISHED work. There is no length limit, no type limit; fanfic, original fiction, fantasy, SF, romance, literary fiction, novel, short story, whatever. I'm not great with poetry, though. The book review will be intended to show you how a review of your work would be, were it published in its current form. It is intended as critique. THIS IS NOT AN OFFER TO HAVE A BOOK REVIEWED AT MY WEBSITE. (I do those for free.)

I would prefer works that are complete.

I will help edit OR beta-read a written work of up to but not exceeding 10,000 words (as I have, sadly, to work on a dissertation). If it is for a work in progress, please check with me; I intend to finish critiquing by September 1st.

This will involve feedback via e-mail; I try to give 'first-impressions' as well as more detailed commentary/criticisms of what works and what might be a bit awkward.

Original stories are fine, poetry is fine. Fanfic is fine also but please contact me first.

Delivery: starting from initial email and settling on what is to be critiqued, to be finished by September 1st as stated above.

Offered:  I will beta up to 50,000 words of either original fiction or fan fiction (or any combination of words from either, with a maximum of 50,000, although I can be flexible on this if you're a few over).  As an experienced original-fiction writer, I have a good grasp of the finer nuances of English grammar, which translates exceptionally well to editing fan fiction.  I do not edit other languages except French.  Summaries of the story or stories are appreciated.  Stories of all ratings will be accepted.  If submitting fan fiction for anything other than well-known series (i.e., Sailor Moon, Harry Potter, etc.), links to resources about the series are greatly appreciated.

Minimum bid: $5.00

Delivery time:  Not more than seven weeks after initial purchase, depending on the length of the piece or pieces submitted.

I offer beta reading/editing for up to 50K words. I'm a certified beta reader at Perfect Imagination, and I'm a moderator at OWL. If you want a canon/characterization check, I'm familiar with The Sentinel, Harry Potter, Babylon 5, Star Trek: TNG, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: TOS, and Yu-Gi-Oh. I mainly read h/c and slash. I am willing to do spelling and grammar for any fanfic or original fic, however.

Delivery: 24 hours for every 10k words. (That's an overestimate, most likely much faster.)

Offer: I will edit up to 20,000 words (can be divided into multiple pieces) of fanfiction and/or original fiction. I have been a fiction editor for friends for years, and have offered my services for fanfiction betaing over the last three and a half years. My specialties are spelling/grammar, word choice, sentence structure, characterization, dialogue, and plot continuity. In my fandoms (Harry Potter and Supernatural) I can also offer critique on how it fits with canon, if desired; in Harry Potter especially I am somewhat obsessive about fact-checking and know how to find information if I don't know it. For fiction in the sci-fi category, my biology major and extreme geekiness about all things science may or may not come in handy, depending on the story; I also have random skills that may be helpful, like a fairly good (albeit rusty) grasp of Spanish and a tiny bit of Latin.

Aside from Harry Potter and Supernatural, I have watched House M.D., The Office, and Dr. Who, though I am not active in those fandoms; for fanfiction based on books other than Harry Potter, please feel free ask if I've read them, since I may have at least a basic knowledge of the canon you're working with. I've also seen quite a few movies, but for manga/anime, it's pretty safe to assume I haven't read, seen, or even heard much about it. I would prefer to edit fanfiction from a fandom I know at least a little about, but I will definitely accept offers from fandoms I don't - so long as you don't mind that I have no previous knowledge of what you're working with.

I am thorough and brutally honest when editing; I edit to help you improve as a writer, not to boost your ego. That said, I will tell you when I think you've done something really well. I will read any rating, and I'm not easily squicked. For my short list of squicks and a few other HP/Supernatural specifics, please see this post - but in a lot of cases, I'm willing to read things that disturb me, if they are for the purpose of disturbing me. So if you have a piece that contains one or more of my squicks, feel free to tell me about the story, and I will let you know if I'm willing to read it.

If you have any questions about the specifics of your work and whether I would be able to help you with them, please feel free to get in contact with me. Also, if you write in one of my fandoms and we have many of the same tastes (pairings, genres, etc) I would be willing to consider being a more long-term beta, assuming you like the way I work.

NOTE: Please give story details (most importantly, word count) in your offer. I would be willing to entertain multiple offers if the word count does not exceed 20,000 to be edited in total (10,000 words each from 2 people, or 5,000 each from 3-4 people).

Delivery: depending on my schedule, the length of the story, and how many corrections it needs, I generally get drafts back to authors within a range of 1 week to 1 month after receiving it.

Beta services for a fic or original piece of any length, including novel length. I'm a big spelling/grammar buff and also good at pointing out awkward sentences and plot problems. I do beta work regularly for a friend and my turn-around is very swift (though this obviously depends on the length of the piece). I will take a shot at canon/characterization beta as well if you're writing from any of my fandoms (mostly anime/cartoons).

DELIVERY: Depends on the length of the piece and my schedule, but it should be pretty fast.

MINIMUM BID: $5 (Please bid higher for a longer work-- this is for charity after all!)

Beta services on a fanfic, any length. I am particularly good at grammar-picking, plotting and pace. I'm a natural grammar whore, I have experience editing others' work in school, and I will also be manning the beta booth during artists' and authors' night at Terminus 2008. The fandoms I'm most familiar with are Harry Potter, Joan of Arcadia, His Dark Materials, CSI: Vegas, House, RENT, John Hughes movies, and Pride and Prejudice. Those would be the easiest in terms of characterization, but I'll do my best with anything that comes my way.
I will also critique original fiction, of any length.

DELIVERY: Depending on my schedule and the length of the work, it could be between a day and a week.

My fandoms include Highlander, Quantum Leap, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Smallville (I'm current through season 5), The X-Files, Lost, Northern Exposure, Ghostbusters, Star Trek (original and TNG), and Power Rangers (through PRLG).

Offer: I’ll critique the opening (about 50 pages) of your novel with an eye toward pacing, character, narrative tension, structure, world-building (too much or too little?), and other detailed considerations including the all important question: is the opening you’ve written on page one the place this novel should actually start? I can likely be most helpful with original fiction, but I’ll happily work with fanfic as well.

I can take an rtf file or a paper manuscript, and the format must be 8.5x11 (or A), double spaced, 12 point, with 1” margins. I prefer Courier or Times Roman or something in that line.

My expertise? I’ve had eighteen sff novels published (and a few short stories), have been nominated for awards and been on best seller lists. I’ll do my best to help you figure out where your weaknesses lie and how to fix them, as well as how to enhance your strengths. I will be honest but kind or, if you prefer, kind but honest.

Offer: A detailed professional critique of up to fifty (50) manuscript-formatted* pages of fiction (original or fanfic, though I cannot guarantee that I will be able to catch character details in fandoms I am not familiar with), including line-editing and structural and character discussion.

I will endeavor to be gentle and fair, but I will be truthful.

The manuscript may be a portion of a novel or it may be made up of shorter pieces.

If you are curious about my credentials, I am an internationally published, award-winning novelist and short story writer. You can read my CV here, on my website.

* Manuscript-formatted means 8.5 x 11, 1" margins, double-spaced, 12 point Courier or Times New Roman.

Delivery: Within a month after you email me the manuscript, as long as the manuscript reaches me on or before December 1, 2008.

Offer: I will give you a good, thorough beta of any story up to novella-length (let's say up to 30k words). I'll promise two rounds (but more if we hit it off), and I'll cheerlead too if it helps you. This is not just spelling and grammar; I'd love to chat with you about characterization, pacing, structure, tone...

Fandoms: I have written in SG1, SGA, SPN, and CWRPS. Good canon knowledge in plenty of other fandoms (HP, Torchwood, LotR, some smaller fandoms- ask me!)

Contact: My email and AIM is in user info.

Delivery: Email will work, but I am also always around on AIM and gTalk to discuss your story. I will promise a one-week turnaround each for two drafts of your story (but it's likely to be a bit shorter depending on your length)

Minimum bid: $5.

Offer: one (1) critique of your fantasy novel.* I am not professional, but I am perfectionist, well-read, and historically knowledgeable.

*WIPs OK, but in that case I'd also like to know what you have planned for the rest.

While I cannot send samples of my on-text critique for the sake of the privacy of the author (a friend of mine with whom I worked very closely), I can send parts of the critique that are not directly attached to the text with certain details redacted.

I tend to critique for accuracy, style, and "things to think about" like gender, politics, and clichés. I'd prefer that the draft be proofread for grammar and spelling first.

Contact: nicklausse dot muse at gmail dot com

Delivery: Please send me an electronic copy (MS Word best) that I can mark up with text in red, which is my usual method. It will be returned via e-mail attachment within 3 months. Alternately - this is actually preferable for me - I'll do a slightly less detailed critique in ~2 months and we can discuss via e-mail for another month.

I will critique the first 50 pages of your fantasy, paranormal romance, mystery or thriller manuscript (in standard manuscript format) and offer a line edit and an overall critique.

I am a published, agent-represented author with five urban fantasy novels published or forthcoming from St. Martin's Press as well as a dark fantasy series appearing in June 2009.  I'm also the author of a collaborative novel with Jackie Kessler, coming in 2009 from Bantam Spectra.  My short fiction has appeared in the New York Times bestselling anthology My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon and I have pieces in two more anthologies in the next year.  I also have an English degree and extensive experience critiquing novel-length fiction.

Offer: I will critique up to 5,000 words of original sf/f or fanfiction in a familiar fandom (Angel, Buffy, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Princess Tutu...check with me for others). If original fiction, I can also give some pointers on potential markets. I can do this critique either over email (inline text, .doc, RTF) or via snail, whichever you find more comfortable.

My sf/f has appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet, among other venues, and has been reprinted in Science Fiction: The Best of 2002, ed. Robert Silverberg & Karen Haber, and Year's Best Fantasy 6, ed. David G. Hartwell & Kathryn Cramer. I am a member of the SFWA and a graduate of Viable Paradise VIII. Offer:

I will give you a critique of your fantasy/science fiction novel. I am not a published writer (yet) nor an editor (yet), but I have experience, and my estimate of what is publishable and what isn't usually matches that of actual paid professionals pretty well.

I don't read romance, horror or erotica, so you don't want me to critique those genres, but other than that, I have no restrictions on what I'm willing to read.

I will give you detailed notes on up to thirty pages of prose or 50 pages of script. I have taught writing professionally, and am a professional writer of nonfiction, television, and manga. My students say I'm helpful and supportive, and very honest but not in a mean way.

I have no content restrictions on what I'll read.
