Phones
I think my phone is about to give up the ghost. Only half the keypad lights work, it occasionally vibrates for no discernible reason, and it is now completely invisible to my computer.

So, what I need to replace it is: something small, without the slider parping about, decent camera (ideally usable when on a bike), with a reliable connection to a PC (ideally USB, no fancy wires), works on O2, battery lasts yonks, and I can get it on PAYG. MP3 player / radio might be nice.

This strikes me as a hot ticket. Not too sure about the waiting around for it to appear in the post though.

Anybody got a better suggestion?

Their delivery is actually really bloody fast. It took 2 days for my phone to get to me.

Yeah, when I ordered mine I could chose the day I wanted it delievered and I'm sure you could chose it for next day delivery.

Plus that phone is the phone my dad said I should get but I went for the 6500 classic on pay monthly in the end, but two of my friends have it and seems prety decent.

I'm not a fan of Nokia, so i got this one.

I'm glad i bought it from an o2 shop rather than online because as an existing customer (PAYG) i had the option of money off the handset or free credit.

Hmm. I'm on the simplicity tarriff, which works great for me, but my handset is about to croak. I wonder if they might do me a deal if I rolled into the shop?

Wouldn't hurt to try. I'm on the online tariff whereby paying online rather than in a shop gets me free texts as well as the credit that i've bought.

I'd recommend getting a new handset before it croaks, mine died 3 weeks ago and deleted half my contact list off my sim!

There's a shop not far from me as well - can't hurt to try! Thanks for the pointer :)

Everytime my wife wants a new phone I say to her "Get a Sony Ericson or Nokia", she always poo-poo's, choosing a fashion phone (LG, Samsung) and ends up whinging about how bad it is (although they do look fab).

I've never been dissapointed by a Nokia or Sony Ericson.

I've never had a Nokia, so I don't know about them personally, but judging by the numbers of them about, they must be doing something right. The 6300 above is similar to one a colleague has, and it felt like a quality bit of kit.

The Sony Ericsson I have now has put up with about two years of use, and the dents, scrapes and bashes are testament to it being a hardy thing. What puts me off another similar to this is the proprietary cable for transfer between phone and computer (something I do quite a lot).

The LG Viewty is a striking looking thing, but I don't think I could take myself seriously with something called "Viewty" in my pocket, you know?

As for Samsungs, they all seem to be sliders, which I'm not keen on. The less moving parts, the less likely I am to snap the thing in two :D

Can you not use bluetooth for transfer? I bought a USB dongle a few years back, which everyone in the house uses for transfer... except me as my phone (T-Mobile Vario III) has standard mini USB!

No, for some peculiar reason I can bluetooth to the phone, but not from it. Or I could, if I knew where it was. The dongle, that is.

Scratch that. I've figured out how to move files from one to the other, but it's one at a time. Which is very bad. Not that it matters, as I've apparently just deleted all the pictures apart from one. Bugger. Buggerbuggerbugger.

I always go Nokia by default (currently got the N95 and it really is the best phone I've ever had). My husband had an LG a while back and it was so crap he ended up smashing it on his desk one day - just a shame he was on the phone to me at the time! He now swears by Nokia too :)

Yes the N95 (esp, the recently revised one - bigger screen and storage) is lovely.

Haha yeah I got my Samsung X820 because it looks delightful, but non-aesthetically speaking, it's a pile of wank.

I just got a nokia 6300 at the weekend. I was offered the nokia 6500 classic, but the body seemed a little flimsy in comparison. I wanted a phone that was quite small, well built and easy to use - ticks all the boxes. Only downside I can possibly see it having for you is that there is no flash on the camera- works fine in daylight though.

I am finally glad to be free after a year of samsung touchscreen nonsense.

No flash? That might be a problem. :/

My daughter got one of these a couple of weeks ago. Though there is no flash, it has a "night" setting for the camera which actually takes better pictures in poor light than her (good quality and expensive) digital camera does with the flash.

It's a lovely phone, though the menus are a bit chaotic, she says.

I have a Sony Ericsson K750i and my daughter has just bought a Sony Ericsson W810i. Both are great and very user friendly. The W810i is also VERY loud when it comes to playing music or the radio, not to mention annoying ringtones :/

It's a K750 which is currently going wrong; The W810 looks good, but it shares the same weakness as the 750 (the SE cable to attach to a computer).

The 750 is a doddle to use though.

fits your specification really well :D

I have a Nokia 6300 and it's the best phone i've had (I've had a fair few over the years!) But the only downside, like someone said, is the lack of flash but other than that, I love it :)

What's the picture quality like? I suppose I could cope with a lack of flash - digital cameras at the lower cost end tend not to be too much cop in the dark.

See my comment above, and, the screen is huge (for a phone) and beautiful and very clear and bright. It eats batteries, tho! I have the Samsung d900i which I love and is good, but the screen is not as good as the Nokia 6300.

I'd say it's pretty good yeah, on par with other 2mp camera phones I've played with :) And glassruby mentioned the screen? I agree, it's lovely and clear!

If you know your way around a PC and detest gadgets that offer very few possibilities to play with settings or customise the look and feel of your phone, go for a Nokia. The 6300 is a fairly good one, but the operating system (s40 3rd ed.) is very limited compared to the s60 3rd ed. phones and the camera isn't so great... There are hundreds and hundreds of resources that offer free software for s60 phones. I like this one for the N95...

Anyway, if I were buying a new phone right now I would probably go for the N82... Actually i'd go for the N81 to be honest, but it doesn't meet your requirements.

Key features of the N82:

WLAN
HSDPA (faster than basic 3G)
5mp camera w/ xenon flash
TV-Out
uPnP
Intergrated GPS (and AGPS)
Sex
