How to demonstrate your intelligent, liberal, free-thinking attitude.

Lesson #1

Damnit, you beat me to it. I was too busy trying to see if it was against the community rules. :)

Hehehe, nice.

Thing is... I checked the rules first.

Or at least I tried to, couldn't find any, so just posted.

^_^

Are there rules?

Yep - already pointed this out on the previous post that DID allow us to comment:

I'm intrigued by: "Im interested in your responses re: the post I made earlier." - but I won't allow you to voice them...?

Yeah - i don't care what people say about anything I post but I'll always let them say it. In fat, I enjoy it when people disagree with me, as it force me to question my own views.

I hate people that make posts in communities and then disable commenting. To me it smacks of: I'm right, you're wrong and I don't wanna read your opinion lalalala.

it wasn't peoples opinions she has a problem with, its the attitude and sarcasem that comes with it. the consern she had is a valid one, whether it is true or not, it still happens and we are all responsible to try and prevent it.

I think the problem is that the 'alleged' offending book seems to be just that - a totally unsubstantiated comment about some book being peddled by Amazon.co.uk that's "basically" a guide book for paedo's... however one translates 'basically' seems to be the issue for dissent.

If Amazon are publishing a 'paedo guide for dummies' then yes, it should be withdrawn - but until such times as a: the Radio 4 report can be found, b: the book can be identified, and c: it's contents confirmed - the original post just seemed to be a bit of a scaremongering witchhunt...

The original poster recommended we all 'looked into it', and so far there's no comments on the Radio 4 message boards, nothing in their pre-8 am broadcasts, and so far it all seems a bit wishy-washy... I personally, would welcome something to indicate the opposite...

i think what bothers me most is the fact that people take the micky and are sarcastic towards someone who is just concerned. even if she did get it wrong, there is no need for people to be rude about it, and belittle them. if it happened at school, they would be called bullies. i don't know this person but felt very bad for her. it is not nice when people reply with such comments, and then be made a show of. I have noticed alot that people are quite bitchy, and arragant on some of the posts in this community, and i just don't see the need for it.
why is it so impossible for people to just get along. live and let live.
i'm sorry if this offends people but i think that people could be less rude about it.

No - you're right - people shouldn't be bullied... but people should also be aware that when they raise their hands and yell 'OMG!' that they will then be put on the spot as to why they're waving their hands in the air in the first place...

The whole 'I've written them (Amazon) an email telling them what I think of them' when the writer then went on to say it was 'basically' about where to go as a paedo...didn't know the author, or the actual content of the book, it kind of left me with the impression they'd gone off a bit 'half-cocked'...

Surely if you start a thread on any forum without any substantiation, people are going to start prodding for some..?

ok, i'd like to direct your attention to the comment left by jayed at the bottom of the page, click the link and read the entire article on amazon and toys r us. you will see that her concerns are well based. it may not be happening in england, but it is happening, and in turning your back with a "it's not my problem" attitude, your helping them. true it's not amazon who are writing this, but they are supporting sexual acts with children. which is wrong and makes me feel sick.
just out of interest, is there anyone on this post which actually has children, and if so, how can you support this, and make no mistake, if your taking the piss out of the OP, you are.

I did read the entire article, as you suggested. And, I noticed you missed a couple points.

* The article was actually not an article, it was an opinion piece.
* The opinion piece in question was about a toy web site, not about Amazon.
* The claim being made was that the toy site, by linking to one children's book on Amazon, was enabling the unwitting to poke around further in Amazon and run the risk of stumbling across another book with questionable content.

There are a couple problems with this line of reasoning:

* Amazon contains links to a staggeringly huge number of books, and so the chance of someone coming across the few that do contain questionable content without really, really trying to look for it are indeed vanishingly small.
* Faulting the toy site for linking to one book on Amazon and claiming that that would be a gateway to another specific book is like saying "British Airways flies to the US, the United States has a space shuttle, and so therefore you can buy a ticket to Venus on British Airways."

Your concern about pedophilia is comendable, but it seems that over-reacting to the situation is just as much of a detriment as under-reacting.

Or that maybe I've discovered multi-tasking.

have you ever thought that she disabled comments because of the likes of you

Yes, people who don't like having their opinions commented on are often averse to having their opinions commented on by people who like to comment on people's opinion, a type of person of which I am.

it wasn't peoples opinions she has a problem with, its the attitude and sarcasem that comes with it. the consern she had is a valid one, whether it is true or not, it still happens and we are all responsible to try and prevent it

This is a community blog. Not everyone is going to agree with what you say. Is it patronising or condescending to tell someone who is ranting about something on a community blog that you'd like to have a bit of substance with regards to the thing they are ranting about? I don't think so. Was I being sarcastic? No, I was making a good go at satire. It's in a grey area, so I'll take the safe option and go with post-irony if you like; I love post-irony.

JUst my opinion.

And do you know what the punch line is? You're able to post your opinion because I left the comments on.

*gasp*

Just a Q, has the commenting stopped on this post because you've all read the link jayed put on and feel really stupid, or is it just time to patrol the streets for unwilling victims. i hope to god it's the former. i would repeat to you what i've posted to the rest of them, but as you seem espesially ignorant i 1. doubt you'd understand it, And 2. even if you did, i'd probably only get a comment on comparison between this and an uncomparabale subject as petty as cannabis legalisation, which only harms the person doing it and not destroy the lives of young children.
so how about you just read the above comment from me, and please, for the sanity of normal people, realise that paedophilia is very very wrong, and should not be taken lightly under any circumstances. if i were you i'd feel disgusted that i'm supporting this.

(Reply to this) (Parent)

well said, these people are making me very concerned, do they realise that in taking the mic out of someone who is trying to bring attention to a problematic issue. the fact that amazon.com have been and are still selling pro-paedophile material, adamantly, despite public outrage. the fact that people are accusing her of not looking it up, well, means that their research is as bad as hers.
