clothes show. [Nov. 8th, 2009|11:15 am]

fuckthediet
Anyone know if you can just 'turn up' on the day instead of booking tickets ahead for the clothes show? Been looking on their website but can't seem to find anything.

Also anybody know places where I can find a flower girl dress with butterfly/fairy wings for a 2/3yr old for under £50? We saw one we loved but think £130 is a *bit* much to spend (it was the cutest damn thing I've ever seen though).

P.s Why do people always seem to call just after you've made yourself a nice cuppa? Then you're on the phone staring at your tea as it goes past the nicely infused to perfection stage and enters the cooling down stage... argh. Need cordless phone.

Spotify plea [Nov. 7th, 2009|10:50 pm]

spooforbrains
Does anyone have a spotify invitation to spare? I'm st s party and there is a distinct lack of decent music!

Thsnks!

I already had a Spotify account, but was at a friend's house and just wanted the installer. I didn't initially see the download link at the top of the page, I was just presented with some bollocks about invitations.

Of course, as any moron could have worked out, I could just click "download", download the app, then use my existing user account. Which I eventually figured out, and music was had.

(To mitigate the foolishness somewhat, I was browsing on an eeePC, in very bad light, while slightly drunk)

Thanks for your assistance, all!

For whatever crazy reason I have decided to spend my birthday this year in London. (I'm not really a fan of cities)

I have tickets to see the matinee of Wicked and will be going out for dinner after that, but am a bit stuck as to what to do in the morning.

We will arrive about half 10 so will have about 3 hours to do something.

Any suggestions on memorable birthday type things? I was thinking that Christmassy things might be up and running by the end of November. (I looked at iceskating by the National History Museum, but for some reason Ticketmaster is not selling tickets for the day I will be there.)

I don't really want to do a museum because I won't get to see much in the time we will have.

Oh and also... I'll be with my Mum so nothing too outrageous.

Thanks in advance to any London folk with suggestions!

Tiscali? [Nov. 7th, 2009|01:08 pm]

drusillamac
I be thinking of getting this package from Tiscali so I can get a shiney TV recording box. Also it will save us a bit of cash on our internet as well. We hardly use the phone for calls so that's not an issue.

Any thoughts on Tiscali? Good? Bad? Ugly?

Has peepshow ended already?? [Nov. 6th, 2009|09:51 pm]

bengirrl_tiger
Does anyone know what happened to Peepshow? It wasn't on last friday and it's still not on today! Whyyyyy???

It's only been on for about four weeks and I was just about settling into it and looking forward to it every week, and I refuse to believe that it's over already?!  I'm sure previous series was far longer.  :( :( :(

I love war literature and history, but I feel as though I've hit a dead end with what I can do with my love. I want to remain pro-active but I don't know how. The major problem is I'm not in education anymore so I have absolutely no excuse to write any kind of essay or analysis. One day, hopefully, I'm going to do an MA in First World War Literature (Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol offer exactly that), but Liverpool at least is way above my price range; you have to pay a lot of money upfront for a year long course and there's no grant available to me.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Including reading material, but also excavations (I have a BA in Archaeology and English Literature), places to visit, good museums and...well, I don't know, that's why I'm asking. Anything really.

Secularism 'means fall in births' [Nov. 6th, 2009|10:35 am]

czarny
[mood | amused]

Europe is facing a population crisis because of attacks on religion by secular writers, Britain's chief rabbi has said.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Lord Sacks blamed Europe's falling birth rate on a culture of "consumerism and instant gratification".

He said the continent was "dying" and accused its citizens of not being prepared for parenthood's "sacrifices".

He made his comments in a lecture for Christian think tank Theos in central London on Wednesday.

The 61-year-old, who took his seat in the Lords last week, said: "Wherever you turn today - Jewish, Christian or Muslim - the more religious the community, the larger on average are their families.

"The major assault on religion today comes from the neo-Darwinians."

Negative Reference [Nov. 5th, 2009|11:31 pm]

spooforbrains
I've heard (repeatedly) that an employee is "not allowed" to give a negative reference, or that it's "against the law".

Does anyone know if this is true? I haven't been able to find anything online to substantiate it, much less anything that a friend of mine who has just been given a negative reference can use to metaphorically beat her former employer round the head with.

Oh, Oracle, your (anticipated) assistance in this matter is, as ever, greatly appreciated.

Remember, remember... [Nov. 5th, 2009|08:49 pm]

archimedesuk
It's been a quiet day in lj_uk so...

What does November 5th mean to you? Are you doing anything special, if anything at all? Did you make a Guy - if so was it of someone specific and why? Even if you didn't make one this year who would you make one of? Do you like fireworks?

Is bonfire night still relevant in the 21st century?

Halp! [Nov. 4th, 2009|09:06 pm]

crawling_angel
This place is the quickest way to find out anything. I've had a quick look at O2's website but it's still pissing me off.

My phone has been showing 'limited service' for over a week now. It's a Samsung from approx 2003 so is old, I know. Does this mean that it's in the process of dying? I love my phone and don't want to replace it but feel I may have to as I can't even top up (even though I know there's approx £4 credit still on it).

I can still use the phone for taking pics, alarm etc.

My other half uses O2 and has had no problems at all.

Please help people!

Geeky website uploading problem [Nov. 4th, 2009|04:16 pm]

sophia8
Does anybody host their website with Easyspace? I'm doing a site for a client who has his site hosted there and I can't connect to upload anything. Every time I attempt an FTP connection I get the message "An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host" - that's via my FTP program; attempting to directly FTP via the browser gives me a "connection reset" error message. Going via the Easyspace control panel doesn't help either - my client previously used the pisspoor Easyspace Sitebuilder software to upload a holding page and the Control Panel insists that I use that!
I can connect with all my other websites, so the problem's not at my end. Googling isn't much help - just suggests that it may be some sort of "network problem". Their server is running Linux, if it's any help (although most of my other sites are hosted on Linux servers as well, so it may not be anything to do with the problem).
I've spent hours today trying to get through to their tech support on the phone, without any luck. I'm supposed to upload the site by Saturday.
Can anybody HELP???

I want to test drive a new car...does anyone know if there are any special requirements?
My google-fu is failing me this morning...
Like, do I have to have held my license for a certain length of time?
Or have specific insurance? Or be over a certain age?
or does this vary from dealer to dealer?

TIA

Modernisation vs Morality [Nov. 4th, 2009|01:07 am]

muffinwoman88
Modernisation comes with the problem of machines being able to replace jobs previously carried out by human beings therefore reducing the demand for labour and creating less jobs.

Should progress be halted for the sake of giving a family their bread? Isn't this just what is going on with the Royal Mail?

A small quiz [Nov. 3rd, 2009|10:47 pm]

the_jubjub_bird
"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest . . . . become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance."

Who said this, when and where?
