chiark unhappy? It hung at about 00:10 as I suspended a screen session, and stopped being pingable a minute or so later.
I'm going to feel very embarrassed if this was a scheduled downtime 8-) |

Is it just me (or my client ...) or is chiark irc rather unwilling to allow clients to connect?

chiark down or inaccessible Since I happened to see it happen, chiark crashed at 18:27 this evening. Sysadmin made the following announcement on IRC immediately beforehand I'm going to kill all udptunnels on chiark as other people may be affected. I may drop from IRC (but I hope not). This induced the same kernel bug that was one of the causes of the problems during the upgrade. Hopefully it will be back soon.
ETA: And indeed it was. |

... if it ain't got that ping Anybody know what's up with chiark? It's returning pings, but I don't seem to be able to log in... Or is it just me? |

FYI 15:36 < Emperor> chiark is being put back into its rack.
15:36 < steph> What was wrong with it?
15:36 < Emperor> LILO doom. IWJ has asked me to ping it and when it starts
answering, to log in and see how doomed it looks before
calling him back. So, err, don't all start your ssh clients
just yet ;)
15:37 < Emperor> it'll take a while for them to re-rack it and for it to boot,
tho'.
Edit: yes, chiark is back up, and it is possible to log in. Ian apparently can't log into it from Redbus, but is on his way back to Cambridge. Of course it's still in mid-upgrade, so not all may be working. Use your own judgement as to whether to log back in or not.
Remember that for irc it's possible to use a local irc client with rapun as your irc server for chiark-irc instead - if your machine is not in ox or cam.ac.uk but you have a trusted fixed IP address ask Emp to add you to the ACL. |

I'm wondering if I can maintain my unblemished record of causing chiark to return within minutes by observing its unavailability here.
chiark@status.chiark.greenend.org.uk reports
Hard crash during upgrade, not fixed by power cycler. Investigating. -iwj 20:30 19.02.2006 Appears to be down or unreachable.
Which doesn't sound like a fun time ... |

Another attempt to get #chiark to return to life by pure unadulterated coincidence, by posting something here.
At the moment, login.chiark.greenend.org.uk is un-pingable, chiark@status.chiark.greenend.org.uk takes a long time to respond and then reports "Appears to be down or unreachable." Looks like a crash rather than a routing problem? |

Madder flake Is anybody else having trouble with chiark today? It's been more flaky than a 99 for me all day, and I've lost the connection completely about 6 times so far (twice in the last 20 minutes). Sometimes I can ping chiark but can't log in, other times I can't even ping it. All other connections to the outside world seem okay. |

Chiark routing problems Blackcat's dodgy router struck again at about 09:40 this morning, causing an approximately 7 minute routing outage to chiark. |

OpenID and Dave Holland Dave Holland and I have been playing with OpenID this afternoon (well, rather, he's been playing and I've been dumbly clicking), and appear to have got things up and running so he can see f-locked postings and leave authenticated comments on my journal. LJ's support for proactively adding and managing OpenID users is patchy to say the least. But if you want to give Dave access to your journal in this way, the only way so far that I've found to be able to do it is to go here: http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?userid=8290436&t=Iand then click "Add Friend" in the usual way. |

Hmm. Is chiark off-air? From inside Janet, I get
From rbi-lon-xchangepoint.blackcat.net.uk (217.79.160.35) icmp_seq=1 Destination Net Unreachable
and I also get packets blackholed when pinging/connecting from within btopenworld.

Network problems There appears to be a networking problem to the machines in Redbus. Blackcat are aware.

Morning messages. When I came down to my computer this morning, this message was waiting for me in a Putty window, and I felt that I had to share...
chiark will shut down automatically in 5 minutes. it can walk, talk, climb trees. It's a lot more professional |
