52 Comic Challenges #9: 24 Hour Comic
24 Hour Comic #3: Rescuing Arugula

Start date: 10/20/07 at 10AM; Completion date: 10/21/07 at 2:15AM

The 52 Comics Challenge for the week was to participate in 24 Hour Comic Day (in short: make a 24 page comic on the fly within 24 consecutive hours). I've completed it twice before and loved every minute of it, but I haven't done one lately on account of my chronic "not carpal tunnel but it ammounts to the same thing" injuries that restrict my drawing time.

Still... this time, I took the plunge. My only condition was that I had to let the quality of the comic suffer so that I could take breaks/not freak my wrist out with detail and precision/generally not fall apart. That brought about some entertaining and challenging art restrictions: I had to draw straight up in pen without pencil, so no second guessing. I had to cheat in every way possible, so I included my dusty boxes of rubber stamps, collaged a little, and invented a brilliant plot twist to not require backgrounds for over half the pages (hah).

I find the result kind of cool, and I only broke my health rules for the last three pages (the urge to sleep overrode self preservation) so while my arm is pretty achey, it's still functional today! Hurray!

Also, for some reason I thought it would be keen to use construction paper and Mr. Sketch markers for "selective coloring". I can't remember why I made this decision but it brings a certain 4th grade chic to the whole thing. Enjoy.

Eeeee! Colors and robot bunny and collage construction paper and kitty stamps! Why the crap is your ghetto comic so much cooler than my non-ghetto comics? Seriously, I really like this one. The sparseness of some of the pages looks intentional instead of a means to save your arms, and the different colors of construction paper make me so happy. Honest. Seriously, why are you so awesome? Pass the awesome, please, it is not fair to hog it!

Gosh, Gina, thank you. That's incredibly humbling to hear and quite encouraging about the whole affair :) If things look intentional, then I think I've achieved what I set out to do!

I find the awesome comes to you if you use wierd paper. Like moths to my reading lamp, you cannot keep it away for long.

Those kitty stamps were really creepy! But yes, totally rolled with the multimedia thing -- stamp!Allegory was hilarious, especially with the crayon added in.

And Arugula. Hee! (Spicier than spinach!)

I know! I'm trying to remember what holiday/who gifted them to me, but it's all a horrifying blurr.

I'm so pleased you enjoyed my Harold and the Purple crayon moment :D

I did too! I was actually going to ask if it was deliberately Harold, but it seems I've been beaten to it :P

haha, wow! that was fantastic. It was amazing how much personality and different ... expressions?... allegory had even though he looked exactly the same in every panel.

were they climbing up a beanstalk on page 18??? And kaitoujeanne is right, the kitty stamps were majorly creepy.

multimedia is awesome!

(Also, was that a veiled Switchblade Kittens reference, or mere coincidence? I tend to believe that armed kittens are NEVER coincidental.)

Actually, I find the coincidence of a butcherknife wielding cat far less surreal than the fact I somehow had a butcherknife stamp in my childhood stamp collection in the first place.

At least the disturbing cat-set was a gift and had been unused previously (no ink stains). The knife has no excuses (covered with ink stains).

*grins* I had planned to ask whether the knife was a new addition. I secretly hoped that you'd run out and bought it recently. But no, no. Chibi Sae's childhood stamp epics needed that butcher knife.

The specialness of you.

BEST COMIC EVER

No seriously it's like the best thing I've read in days. Months, possibly.

I like the use of different colored paper and stamps. Some of the pages were hard to read on my screen though. I also like the different color squares used to make doors to other dimensions and the photo collage.

Good work!
