Last year, Carter Burwell took the Twilight world by storm with his wildly appropriate compositions for the film's score, and, this year, Alexandre Desplat is all set to do the same with his score of The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

If you've listened to the New Moon soundtrack, you've already heard one portion of Desplat's work, "New Moon [The Meadow]," but the score for The Twilight Saga: New Moon will much more fully purvey Desplat's musical trappings.

The album is set for release on November 24th, and its cover art was only recently revealed.

Music supervisor for hit TV shows including Gossip Girl, Grey's Anatomy, and Mad Men -- along with the Twilight movie series -- Alexandra Patsavas has quietly made herself one of the most influential figures in the industry, helping to break new bands and shape the aesthetics of popular drama.

With the indie-all-star New Moon soundtrack currently the No. 1 album in the country, Patsavas talked to SPIN.com about how the project came together, what makes for a good soundtrack moment, and which new bands you should watch out for.

How you go about something like New Moon, which features original songs from so many artists who don't often appear in projects this high-profile?
The work starts as soon as the script is finished and distributed. Chris Weitz, the director, had a very specific point of view about how he wanted the music to feel. There's a lot of separation and longing and loss in the movie; the bands and lyrics and sound and arrangements had to reflect that. Some folks, like Lykke Li, the Killers, Grizzly Bear, OK Go, and Anya Marina all came into the cutting room and sat with Chris to watch the movie and talk about their contributions. Other tracks were submitted with the movie in mind. I think it's very difficult to succeed without any context.

A lot of people were surprised by Thom Yorke's inclusion. How did that come about?
A Radiohead song ["15 Step"] played over the end titles of Twilight, so we had a relationship. I believe this is the first soundtrack he's been on in a long time, so that's exciting. A lot of bands were interested in submitting great material, which helps a lot.

It does seem like music that the characters would actually listen to, which is certainly not always the case in soundtrack tie-ins.
I think the music has to be inspired by the characters' lives, but it's not always just used as source material—it's used to score as well. Chris used the Bon Iver/St. Vincent track ["Rosyln"] and Thom Yorke track ["Hearing Damage"] in spots that would have traditionally been scored. I grew up in Chicago in the ‘70s and ‘80s, so those John Hughes movies were important to me. He created a world but also cleverly introduced mainstream kids to non-mainstream kids.

Comments @ the Weitz/Desplat Billboard Music Conference thead gave me inspiration to open this. I've been kind of noticing things for a while now and I think they can be useful for some confrontation in this fandom.

I love this fandom. That's a premise. I love it very much. Love the books, love the movie(s), love the fans.
I'm not opening this thread to fight or anything. Just want to understand what's going on.

'Cause I'm not sure I'm linking where it is all going lately.

Why do I get this feeling that, for a big part of this fandom, all of a sudden Twilight the movie is crap and NM instead is gonna rock big time (and it's not even out yet!)?
I mean. Ok, Twilight the movie might be not Academy material, but we all liked it. Don't deny it. We all have the dvd an re-watch it monthly, if not weekly.
So why I keep on reading people thinking it needs to be re-shoot by Chris Weitz who supposedly will make it a whole lot better?

There's some facts:
- First of all. Catherine Hardwicke is the ONE we should thank profusely because she was the one who made RPattz and KStew possible in the first place. And I'm sure that - apart from dream-team supporters ;) - we all can agree that that was a hell of a casting pick!

- Twilight had 1/5 of the budget NM had. Catherine had to come up with the best she could with that. And I think she did great. I honestly think Chris Weitz couldn't have done anything different with that low budget.

- Sure we all can tell Chris Weitz did a great job so far, with CGI and colors and Italy and all that. But we still have to see the whole thing together.

- Continuity HAS to be kept into consideration while working on a movie franchise like this.
That's why I don't think replacing/editing/whatnot Carter Burwell's lullaby (if that's where Alexander Desplat's work lead to) is a good idea.
I like Alexander Desplat's piece in the NM Ost (didn't get a chance to listen to the score yet), don't get me wrong. I think he's a great composer, but I just wish they keep Bella's lullaby as it is.
If they're going to change composer (as well as they changed director) for each of the movies and each of them changes the main theme completely, then there's not going to be any continuity in the OST.
I see Bella's lullaby like Harry Potter's main theme. They do new arrangement/remix of the main theme in each movie of the saga, but you can tell it's the very same as the first, right?

So you guys tell me what you think about this. Don't be harsh or rude, it is really just to know if I'm the one who sees things this way.

Mods, I hope I tagged this right ;)

  • There were themes (musical) created for for each character. IE one for Bella, one for Bella and Edward, one for Jacob
  • To reflect the confusion in Bella’s mind after Edward leaves, at times the “Edward” and “Jacob” themes are “blurred” together to help created “subliminal confusion” in her mind
  • Jacob’s “theme” features electric guitar. Alexandre used a guitar that sounded very similar to an Indian sitar and Chris jokingly reminded him that Jacob is Native (Indian) American not Indian from India
  • The score will not featuring any of Carter Burwell’s score. (I’ll expound more on this decision in a later post)

"Take that, Bublé! The really-quite-good New Moon soundtrack just took the Canadian crooner’s place atop the Billboard 200 after selling 153,000 copies in its first full week in stores, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Along with last weekend’s receipts, that brings the vampire-flick soundtrack up to a nice ten-day total of 268,000."

Muse are apparently fully embracing their status as the "Twilight" band. They've already had their track "Supermassive Black Hole" on the first film's soundtrack, and come Friday, Twilighters can get their hands on the "New Moon" soundtrack, which features the group's remixed track "I Belong to You."

Now it looks like there's a good chance the British rockers will be back for even more vampy fun on the "Eclipse" soundtrack. "It's great to have the feeling of being a new band again in so many people's eyes or minds ... we might even do something for the third one," drummer Dominic Howard told MTV News. "How about that for a scoop?"

Nothing is set in stone yet, but Howard noted that besides being a favorite of "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer, they also have an in with "Eclipse" director David Slade.

"[Slade is] kind of a friend of ours 'cause he directed about three or four of our videos for the second album, and he's a really great video director," Howard explained. "I know he did that really great kind of sick horror [film '30 Days of Night'] which was a bit of a vampire/zombie vibe, wasn't it? So I think he's a great director, and he's quite a funny character as well. So, yeah, we might do something for him as well."

Although Muse have no problems selling albums without the assistance of "Twilight," Howard notes that they're not going to pass up the chance to work on music for the hugely popular franchise. "That's not the sole reason why people know about us, because this is now our fifth album," he said. "But it's a nice side project to be involved with."

The official soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: New Moon might be making its debut before this year's American Music Awards, but that will not stop the Twilight soundtrack from continuing to make waves at the event.

The official soundtrack for Twilight is nominated in the category "Favorite Soundtrack," alongside the soundtracks for Hannah Montana: The Movie and Hannah Montana 3.

You might recall some of the brilliant pieces included on the Twilight soundtrack including those by Paramore ("Decode" and "I Caught Myself"), Robert Pattinson ("Let Me Sign" and "Never Think"), and Muse ("Supermassive Black Hole") - to name a few.

The awards show will take place on ABC on November 22nd (two days after The Twilight Saga: New Moon's U.S. release), and voting is still ongoing. You can vote for the Twilight soundtrack to win the AMA here!
