For the last part, I specifically heard Torvalds say "Lie-nucks," and so I feel vindicated in my pronunciation. :p

I am fully aware of what the documentation says. However, I have heard, with my own ears, what Torvalds said, and it was lie-nucks.

look again, thats not documentation, it's a sound file. Listen to it:)

I don't think you understood me.

That is a sound file within documentation (/pub/). I have heard it.

I am stating that I heard, separately, Torvalds pronounce it differently -- which happens to be the way I pronounce it -- and as such, do not feel any need to change my pronunciation.

It sounds more like lee-nucks there. (Like the pronunciation of the beginning of the scandinavian name Linus). I saw a documentation with him in it (and his accent isn't nearly as heavy as that au... wonder when it was made...) and he said lih-nucks. But it is a very small variation. And it certainly isn't lie-nucks (where lie is said like the English word).

Bleh.. why don't we just use IPA so this is less complicated? ;P

I pronounce "fsck" the exact same as "physic" (with more of a schwa than an "i") - and I pronounce "linux" as "lee-noocks", like Lee-noos.

vi.

vee-eye?
vee?

I say the first.

...even though I use elvis. heh.

emacs.

ee-max?
emucks?

The first. But it usually has a suffix of 's-uh-k-ss.'

It doesn't matter how you pronounce some things, just as long as you can spell them correctly. ;)
It's all a potato/potato'h' thing, the developers may have a special way to say some things, but that's their take. Everyone mispronounces stuff.

I feel like punching people's faces in when they say 'Orey-Gawn' when referring to the state of Oregon. I'm from there, and I know how it's pronounced. Or when they say 'Wustah' when referring to Worchester.

fucking new england primitives.

Same here. vee-eye and e-max. But I say vim "vihm" (not vee-eye-em). Joe is so much easier as far as pronunciation goes ;P
