Welcome to Linked By Letters, the place to join if you want to get in touch with people through letters, postcards or any other form of friendly, non-electronic mail. This community is designed to connect people all over the country and, eventually, all over the globe with other people who enjoy engaging in the nearly lost art of letter writing. If you love to make new friends, love to write, and love to get mail, this is the place for you.

A few ground rules:

1) This is not an open community. All members must be approved by me,

liebschjen, your friendly moderator or by

icemaiden013, your friendly co-mod. Why? Because we are dealing with people's real names, addresses, and contact information and we want to keep everyone on this community as safe and comfortable as possible.

2) If you won't reciprocate, don't participate. Or, in slightly more verbose terms, if you want to receive letters and postcards but don't want to take the time to send them back to the person who sent them to you, do not participate in this community. It's not fair to any of the other members who have put time and effort into writing a letter or card not to receive anything in return. It is understandable to everyone if you're having a hectic week and can't reply right away ... but if you intend to reap and never sow, then please exit stage left.

3) Friendly, positive mail only. Under no circumstances are you to send hateful, rude, offensive, or unpleasant messages to anyone you're in contact with. This community is for the purposes of enjoyment and friendly contact ONLY. Anyone intending to send hate-mail should also exit stage left ... security will be waiting in the wings.

4) Posting rules: Please post under LJ cuts whenever possible. If you have any misgivings about posting your mailing adress or name anywhere on the comm, please use filters. Filtering your address and/or name only to the people you are keeping in contact with is just a smart idea. By the same token, please be aware that not using filters is okay, too. The reason I'm moderating who joins the comm is to keep out the sickos, if there are any.

5) Content of posts: When you first post here, write a short bio on yourself to get people interested(or just post the link to your info page). Give some basic info on your likes, dislikes, fandoms, hobbies, interests, etc. This will help other people looking for a pen pal to figure out what they have in common with you and whether to strike up a correspondence. Put your best foot forward. You're looking for new friends, right?

If you're keeping in contact with someone regularly, feel free to add a post letting them know that you've just put a card/letter in the mail or that you got their card/letter and will write back as soon as you can. Any post designed to help you establish or maintain contact with a fellow member is acceptable. Please, no personal rants or raves or bitching. Those go in your own journal. No movie reviews or book reviews .... though in presenting your bios you may pimp your other communities to your heart's content.

6) Challenges: Occasionally to keep the creative juices flowing I'll present a challenge. It's fun to get letters and cards, especially when they're out of the ordinary. So perhaps in the middle of summer I'll challenge everyone to find an old Christmas card and send it ... just for fun. Or to send someone an un-birthday or half-birthday card. Or to blow up a balloon, write a short note on it in Sharpie and then deflate it and send it to your pen pal ... creative ways to send mail, to keep in touch, and to cheer each other up. Feel free to present your own creative ways to keep in touch to the community.
