yeah - it seemed a bit out of control, some folks' gnarlyness to your post. there are ways of confronting/questioning someone on post content without being a total troll or assuming the worst about the poster's intentions.

by including the n-word in the content of your post, I suppose you kind of asked for getting razzed to some degree, it seems inevitable anytime anyone wants to have any sort of discussion about it, not matter their asserted intentions. but I think it's unfortunate that you got so railroaded as there certainly are some useful and interesting conversations about the linguistic aspects and phonetics of American urban-black vocab/usage/pronunciation in that could've been had.

s/times we're all so hyper-PC and flame-happy towards eachothers' race/ethnicity questions and fumblings, even when the intentions are good, that we end up not able to cross-culturally communicate about anything.

Sorry to hear that. One should think that in a community like this where one should be able to discuss LANGUAGE in a neutral way (and to me, the concept of language doesn't only include what some people consider politically correct, but it embraces ALL aspects of language) there wouldn't be such one-sided hateful comments. It seems I was wrong.

Some people seem to forget that those words they so harshly condemned in your post are every-day-speech of certain people (to confirm this, one would only have to look through the booklets of my little brother's hip hop CD collection where the same word is written in the same way as in your post at least 100 times in each booklet). Now that we can't even discuss that anymore... It's sad that some people like to play "PC police" when others just like to discuss the way language is used.

People may discuss anything they like related to language, including the terms in the post that was deleted. You apparently did not see the deleted post, as the post discussing the word "niggah" is still available.

However, if people feel the need to post several dozen highly offensive terms in extra-large, bolded black type with little to no explanation, they had damn well better expand their explanation and put the offensive text behind a cut.

No, I didn't see the deleted post, I wasn't referring to that, since I thought it was the first post that had been deleted. Of course I'm also not in favour of people just posting offensive words for the sake of it. Thank you for clarifying there was another post.

What I found highly offensive, though, was the reaction of certain people to the first post. I think certain people should grow up a little before calling others "retarded" or whatever other words were used. That, in my opinion, doesn't show much maturity or the will to discuss things in an intellectual manner.

I understand that someone can be offended by certain words, but that doesn't justify that they themselves pick out other offensive words to insult the original poster.

Unfortunately, no one pointed out the first post to me. I'd seen it earlier in the day, commented, and gone on my merry way. Then I woke up this morning to complaints about the second post, and in my very limited getting-ready-to-rush-out-to-work time, I dealt with that—it was the only thing I looked at on LJ. I didn't see what was going on on the first post until tonight when someone on this post mentioned it. Which brings us to the whole "How the heck am I supposed to deal with things if no one ever points them out?" thing I keep harping on. Anyway both posts have now been dealt with in a way that I hope will discourage the particular people involved from doing the same thing again.

Hey, I was on your side in the initial thread with anarchy's saviour or whatever his name was -- he's the one who should be deleting and apologizing, ideally -- but the latter post you put up was simply inappropriate and flame-baiting. Context, ulvesang, context. It's OK by me to have a little heat in comments to an otherwise serious post, but to start a post intentionally irritating already-irritated readers? -- take it to [info]agitprop pls!

That said, again, I agree with your position, mah niggah.

Objective summation:

First post: ulvesang's post (still available on the linguaphiles recent posts page) asks about how authors in various languages spell regional dialects. Uses the word "niggah" in an example of BEV/AAVE.
Comments to this post were at first academic, bringing up various literary styles. Somebody objected to the use of the word "niggah". A long series of arguments ensues.

Second (now deleted) post: ulvesang questions why his first post was deleted (I can still see it on the recent posts page, so I don't know that it was?) and makes some immflamatory comments about "niggah" and racism.

Third (this) post: ulvesang mentions deleting that post.

His first post is still available.

His second was deleted by me for intentionally offensive language (in font size=+2 bolded black type) without an lj-cut, warning, or explanation.

If there was a third post asking why the second one was deleted, it was deleted before I saw it.

If such a post existed, the current post is his fourth.

Ah, that would explain my puzzlement. In which case, to re-number my summation above:

First: "niggah" post
Second: Large, bolded offensive words. (deleted by mod)
Third (referenced above as 'second'): Questions why earlier (second) post was deleted. (deleted by poster)
Fourth (referenced above as 'third'): this post
