    The Corolla
    Mansfield Recreation Park

Sent my car in for servicing yesterday evening. Odometer is at 85,582 miles. They are also going to repair the driver's side door weatherstripping, which has come loose. They need an additional day to order that part so I'll be keeping the loaner car for two days. This time, it is a Toyota Corolla LE. This is a comparatively fuel-efficient vehicle. According to this review, it gets around 38 MPG, which was what my previous car, a 1995 Saturn SL, got. Downsides are it's a bit underpowered (it struggled to get up to speed merging on a bit of an incline onto Route 17) and the seat is rather low. Of course, on those two points, I've been spoiled by my car so I'm not a good judge there. On the plus side, the Corolla LE has 2 glove compartments! The space above the glove compartment that goes unused in many cars, flips open to reveal another compartment. Brilliant!

I'm now on the Postcrossing leaderboard for USA. It's not a stable situation though because there are a few Postcrossers with around the same number of postcards sent, so the rank depends on mail delivery timing.

    Yahoo annoyances

Something that's really annoying is the following - when you chat with someone on Yahoo and send a message that's over some specific length limit, it gets truncated silently.

WHOEVER thought that this was a good idea? There's so many things that could be done to handle this in a more graceful manner. Right off the top of my head, I can think of at least the following, in order from "more kludgy" to "more elegant":

    • Instead of silently truncating messages, alert the sender to the fact that his message got cut-off (and tell him WHERE it got cut off, too).
    • Split the message into several pieces automatically and send each as a message of its own, ideally with a notification that this split was automatically performed by the software.
    • Get rid of arbitrary size limits altogether - at least arbitrary size limits that people will typically run into. I don't mind a 64k character limit on messages, for example; a 512 character limit, on the other hand, would be annoying (I have no idea whether this is Yahoo's actual limit, but it's somewhere within that order of magnitude, I think).

Really, anything would be better than just *silently* failing.

CSO tickets now available for MFF performances
I just checked the CSO's website, and it looks like tickets are now available for the performances of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, which will be taking place during MFF. If anyone would like to go ahead and purchase tickets now, please let me know which night you prefer. I'm aiming for the Friday night performance myself. Thanks!

    Cleaning
I was in a bit of a funk again this afternoon, mostly since I didn't really have anything to do and since I couldn't really go anywhere (after having returned the car I borrowed to my parents last night), but I eventually ended up cleaning the bedroom a bit - something I'd wanted to do for quite a while already.

There's still a number of things there that could and probably should be done, but at least the bed's got fresh sheets again, my plushies (the ones on the bed and the nightstands) are de-dusted (although there's probably still dust in their fur), and so's the windowsill and all that. And also, I hoovered the floor - which also was quite necessary.

I still wish there was a good way to prevent dust from accumulating in the first place, though. Of course, keeping things stowed away instead of in the open would already help (insofar as that cleaning would be easier), but why isn't there some sort of air filter that you can run that will remove dust from the air?

    A Conversation with Delframber [18 Thory 4262]

Delframber was kind enough to seek me out at lunch (at Quelldrie House) the next day.

Delframber:"They say ... you were looking for ... me on .. Morleyfuck Street."

    Me:"Yes ... I didn't get a very kind reception."

Delframber:"No ... they say ... that they drove you off ... and that thus ... I must pay ... for their protection. ... Fortunately ... the fee ... was modest."

(For the curious: I'm transcribing Delframber's words correctly and the other Khtsoyis' without the breaths. This is because Delframber's choice of words is not very Khtsoyis.)

    Me:"Protection against me?"

Delframber:"They see you ... as a sorcerer ... of the city guard. With a tame ... nendrai ... as backup. ... And the duke's ... left ear ... and the secret master's ... right ear. Visiting the ghetto ... on official business ... and of course ... official business ... is not well-loved ... in the ghetto. "

    Me:"Secret master?"

    Delframber:"Your half sibling ... Hezimik .. kinen"

Zemi isn't the Secret Master of Vheshrame. Zie's pretty important, but the Duke's really in charge.

Me:"That's a very strange way to see me.

Delframber:"How should ... my thuggish neighbors ... see you?"

Me:"Well, I see me as a small and unmenacing lizard surrounded by very large mammals."

Delframber:"And, maybe ... transaffectionate ... and thus exposed ... to assorted dangers?"

    Me:"Definitely."

Delframber:"And ... from what I hear ... in the tug of war ... between the duke and .. Hezimik .. kinen ... you play ... the rope?"

Me:"What a horrid way to think about it."

    Delframber:"An ... unenviable ... position ... though my streetmates ... might not ... find it so. "

Me:"And, oh, I'm more the nendrai's favorite toy than she's my backup. And certainly she's not allowed in the city."

Delframber:"Khtsoyis often ... have reason ... to leave the city. "

Me:"Vae mostly fights with Gormoror, I think. Or, rather, mostly Gormoror fight with Vae. She's not very aggressive exactly."

Delframber:"A fine point ... that may elude ... many thugs."

Me:"Anyways -- thanks so much for coming here. Would you like some lunch?""

Delframber:"I should be grateful ... of a few mouthfuls ... but I do not ... wish to impose ... if, indeed, it will be ... an imposition."

Me:"Jarmiet usually has plenty of food around; we would not let a guest go hungry!"

So we flew into the Lightly Scaled Refectory. Jarmiet didn't seem all that surprised -- oh, of course she's not, she let him in and it's lunchtime. She served beetle soup, and some nice seed bread from Floosh's bakery, and mixed pickles, and, because there was an extra person of substantial appetite eating, she made some cheese and herb pancakes for everyone but me. Everyone being Anoof and Dustweed, and Narngi after a while.

Delframber:(On the way in)"Is the topic you sought ... me for, a topic ... that can be discussed ... in company?"

Me:"Oh, absolutely. Just a minor favor I'd like to ask."

Delframber:"We have asked ... more substantial ... favors of you ... in the past."

Me:"This should take you much longer! But fewer cley. I'd like you to wear this cloak for a full day, without taking it off."

    Delframber:"Is it safe?"

Me:"There's no magic on it now, I'm just using it for an enchantment. Later on it will be expensive and powerful."

Delframber:"It is delightful ... to watch a ... blooming enchanter .. at work."

Anoof:"More of a blooming idiot, some people say."

    Me:"Mainly in matters of love..."

    Anoof:"Which is to say, constantly..."

Me:"And mainly when I follow your advice."

Which reminded me of something for some reason...

Me:"Oh, Delframber? How is Ysgwyd doing?"

Delframber:"She is pregnant ... by her husband ... and generally happy. "

    Me:"Generally?"

    Delframber:"We have ... to move."

    Me:"Oh, why?"

Delframber:"The Khtsoyis ghetto ... is not suitable ... for raising ... a young Orren ... or anyone ... who does not ... levitate ... or self-heal."

    Anoof:"Where will you live?"

Delframber:"We are still ... seeking a place ... for a Khtsoyis ... and an Orren ... outside the ghetto."

    Anoof:"That sounds rather hard."

Delframber:"Ilottat has ... offered to help ... even at ... a certain sacrifice. ... He may ... co-sign the lease ... with his wife ... and her ... adulterous lover. ... though not of course ... move in. ... A count's child ... is a better ... sort of rentor ... than I am."

Me:"That's very nice of him, indeed."

Delframber:"He is capable ... of surprising ... acts of decency ... considering what ... we are doing to him ... "

    T-Rexes Don't Scare Ya, Huh?
    How about this guy?

    Dragon (CL 20 / 64,920 XP)

This stat block is for the classical "giant, flying, fire-breathing brute," rather than for sophisticated riddle-telling tea-drinkers. To make a sophisticated riddle-telling tea-drinker, increase the Int to 18, giving the dragon five additional trained skills (presumably in the Knowledge or Perform arenas, or Spellcraft if you want it to cast spells). You can also give your dragon levels in Scholar or other appropriate classes.

    Huge Beast (dragon) 20
    Sanity Loss 1/1d10
Init +15; Senses Perception +19, Low-Light Vision, Darkvision, Scent
DR 10/magic; Immune fire; Resistance Spells +15

    Defenses Ref 20 (flat-footed 20), Fort 17, Will 14
    hp 210; Threshold 27

Speed 8 squares, fly 30 squares
    Melee bite +26 (2d6+21) and 2 claws +26 (1d8+21) and tail slap +26 (1d8+21) plus snatch or
    Melee crush +21 (1d10+21) area effect: 3 squares x 3 squares
Ranged flame breath +17 (6d6+10) area effect: 10 square cone or 20 square line plus catch fire
Fighting Space 3 squares x 3 squares; Reach 2 squares
    Base Atk +15; Grp +36 (+10 size)

    Abilities Str 33/+11, Dex 10/+0, Con 23/+6, Int 2/-4, Wis 19/+4, Cha 18/+4
Feats Cleave, Improved Defenses, Power Attack, Skill Focus (Perception), Skill Training (Acrobatics), Skill Training (Initiative), Weapon Familiarity (Natural Weapons), Weapon Focus (breath weapon)
Skills Acrobatics +15, Initiative +15, Perception +19, Survival (tracking) +19

Crush A dragon may attempt to land (or jump) upon its foes, crushing them under its body. Moving into its foes' space provokes an attack of opportunity. If the crush attack is successful, the targets take the crush damage immediately, are considered pinned, and begin to suffocate. They continue to take the crush damage every round until the dragon moves, at which point they are left prone in the square they occupied when they were attacked. Any foe that is not hit by the crush attack is immediately moved out of the crush-effect square to the nearest unoccupied square.
Flame Breath A dragon's flame breath may be spread in a 10-square cone or a 20-square line, automatically attacking everything within the area of effect. Any creature that takes damage from the dragon's breath catches on fire and begins to take normal fire damage on the next round (see the normal fire rules). The dragon may not use its flame breath again until 1d4 rounds have passed.
Natural Armor A dragon's thick scales give it +10 natural armor and DR 10 (bypassed by magic weapons).
Snatch A dragon that hits with a bite or claw attack may immediately attempt a grapple check against that target as a free action. If successful, the target is considered to be carried by the dragon, taking damage automatically until it escapes. The dragon is not considered grappled; a common tactic is to fly to a great height and drop the target.
Spell Resistance A dragon's inherently magical nature gives it +15 to all defense scores against the effects of spells. The dragon may choose to suppress this ability.
Tail Slap A dragon that successfully hits with its tail slap moves the target 1 square any direction as with a bull rush. The target cannot be moved into a solid object or another creature's fighting space.

    Picture Puzzle
    srp-3

This afternoon's excursion was to Saddle River Puzzle, which was in a small park in the nearby town of Saddle River. The puzzle part was to reassemble a bunch of rectangular pieces to form an image with the coordinates. I was going to print and cut out the pieces and reassemble them by hand, but I realized that it would be too much work. So I did the puzzle in Paint.NET.

Once I had the answer, the park was a mere 2 miles away and the cache site was a quick walk around the pond to the banks of the Saddle River.

    Wanna See Something REALLY Scary?

Dinosaur, Tyrannosaurus Rex (CL 15 / 36,920 XP)

    Huge Beast 18
    Sanity Loss 1/1d10
Init +10; Senses Perception +16, Darkvision, Scent

    DR 5
    Defenses Ref 16 (flat-footed 15), Fort 16, Will 12
    hp 189; Threshold 26

    Speed 8 squares
Melee bite +23 (2d6+18) plus grab or
Melee charging bite +27 (2d6+27) plus grab, -2 Ref defense
Fighting Space 2 squares x 2 squares; Reach 1 square
    Base Atk +13; Grp +32 (+10 size)

    Abilities Str 28/+9, Dex 13/+1, Con 21/+5, Int 2/-4, Wis 15/+2, Cha 10/+0
Feats Dodge, Improved Charge, Mobility, Powerful Charge, Weapon Familiarity (Natural Weapons), Weapon Focus (bite), Weapon Specialization (bite), Toughness
Skills Perception +16, Survival (tracking) +16

Improved Grab A t-rex that successfully hits with its bite attack may attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity.
Natural Armor A t-rex's thick hide gives it +5 natural armor and DR 5.
Swallow Whole A t-rex that begins its turn grappling a target of size large or smaller may swallow that target whole as a standard action by making a successful grapple check. Once the target is swallowed, it is still considered to be grappled, although the t-rex is now free to act normally. The target takes 2d6+18 damage from being swallowed, then automatically takes that damage damage each additional round from muscle constriction, stomach acid, and so forth, and begins to suffocate. Targets with acid resistance or DR vs. bludgeoning do not apply the resistance, but only take half damage. The swallowed creature may attempt to cut their way out with a light slashing or piercing weapon. The Ref defense required to effectively cut through is 12, and the target must do 20 hp to cut through the gullet. This immediately moves the t-rex -2 steps down the condition track. Once the hole is made, any additional creatures still in the gullet may attempt to escape by making Acrobatics checks against DC 16, or by doing 10 hp total. Alternatively, a swallowed target may make a Climb check or Grapple check (whichever is higher) vs. the t-rex's Grapple check to climb back up into the mouth, where it may be bitten or swallowed again. A t-rex can hold 1 large or 2 medium or 4 small creatures in its gullet, and will not swallow another creature whole if it has been cut open.

All that and it only came out to be CL 15. Can you believe it?

In other news, congrats to the Star Wars Saga Edition team on your Ennie awards! They're well deserved!

    Stuff

    Some good things...

I got more books in the mail today - specifically, three copies of the Improvisation Playbook, one of them signed and dedicated to me, and the other two copies "just" signed. ^.^ I'll definitely start reading this one soon; I'm still in the middle of another Raymond Feist novel now, but I'll start this one afterwards. ^^ (Yeah, I could read them in parallel, of course; but for the most part, these days, I read in bed prior to falling asleep, so it'd not be very practical to read several books in parallel right now.)

Outside of that, I bought some more Febreze today - I usually use the antibacterial variant for my gym clothes (it's pretty much necessary to keep them from starting to smell - I neither can nor want to wash them every day), and I saw an ad mentioning that it was an sale at one supermarket chain this week, for 2,99 EUR per bottle rather than the regular 4,29 EUR. So, knowing that I'd use it sooner or later and that it couldn't spoil or anything, I bought every bottle I could get (8 in total - it's been going like hot cakes, apparently), saving over 10 EUR in total. :)

Also, my parents came back from their vacation a few days ago, so they brought me some things - a pack of Fristi, some packs of Dutch yoghurt (with 35 and 40 kcal per 100 g, respectively; not the lowest I've ever seen, but VERY low, with only the Studiomilk/Yogana yoghurt beating the former by a mere one kcal per 100 g), and a pack of chocolade vla.

I really need a flessenschraper, though. Will anyone from the Netherlands who's reading this come to EF, per chance? ([info]gryphe? ^^)

    Neat anecdote

    From Wikipedia:

When Germany invaded Denmark in World War II, the Hungarian chemist George de Hevesy dissolved the gold Nobel Prizes of Max von Laue and James Franck into aqua regia to prevent the Nazis from stealing them. He placed the resulting solution on a shelf in his laboratory at the Niels Bohr Institute. It was subsequently ignored by the Nazis who thought the jar—one of perhaps hundreds on the shelving—contained common chemicals. After the war, de Hevesy returned to find the solution undisturbed and precipitated the gold out of the acid. The gold was returned to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Nobel Foundation who recast and presented the medals to Laue and Franck.

    Quite a nifty idea indeed.

    Lehigh Valley
Another sunny day with temperatures in the 80s. Went to Lehigh Valley again. This time, I went a bit further west, to Bethlehem, Hellertown, East Allen, and Whitehall. I visited some cache sites in downtown Bethlehem but I ended up just skipping those because those were not to my liking. In particular, one cache was apparently right next to a homeless encampment. I saw the clothes, bags, and cardboard box tents and decided that proceeding any further would not be advisable. The funny thing is that place was very close to where I used to get pizza at Picasso Pizza. (which apparently changed ownership) The difference is about 100 vertical feet. (cache site is at river level, while the shopping center is at street level a few storeys up)

Far more enjoyable was the Nor-Bath Rail Trail series of geocaches. I found five geocaches from "Preemie" to "Pre-teen". There were a few more stages of life remaining but I left those for another time since the sun was heading down by that time. Since I ended the day in Whitehall, I planned on going to Old Country Buffet in Whitehall for dinner. After the last cache, I called them and found out that they close at 9pm on Sunday. It was already 8:26pm, so there definitely wasn't enough time for dinner. However, the last cache of the day, "M-T-O WhiteHall", was near a Sheetz store so I had Grande Nachos with every topping from the menu. It was piled so high that the Sheetz lady had to push it down to close the takeout container! Now, that's what I call made-to-order. :)

    The caches... )
