Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
the code that defined a generation
We debated posting this at first because it ALMOST falls into our "don't break the 4th wall" policy...but it's pretty dead on, and Jeremy does a clever job of incorporating the 'real world' stuff into the gameworld.

Check out more funny and observational comics by Jeremy Arambulo!

I think I personally clocked more hours playing Konami's Contra and Life Force than any other two games that have come out since. 2-player bliss.
Thanks Jeremy for taking me down memory lane!

I saw a bunch of his stuff over at JHU and was amazed and said "I hope he's at SPX, I wanna just hand him my money for stuff"... if he isn't? At least it's at JHU and he's already been paid or however they work it.

I don't really see this as fourth wall either, he totally figued out how to incorprate it. The needle thing... BRILLIANCE!

Really, really nice.

Whenever I wear my Contra tee shirt, I always have people telling me about how they always used the Code as kids. See, they're preying on us as children with their codes!

It's nice to see being weak in contra from the character's position :)

Didn't the 'Konami Code' work on every Konami game in some capacity?

As far as I knew it was just Contra and Lifeforce.

But I never really tried it on too many others. Really could have used it on Russian Attack.

BTW on the code always feels a bit empty to me with out the SELECT start.

I never play Contra alone.

Dude, it was RUSH N' ATTACK. As in Rush AND Attack. Anyone who thinks it was a thinly veiled hate vehicle from the 80's is sooo mistaken.

thanks so much for the comments, y'all! this was a really fun comic to draw.

dave: it's funny you mentioned the SELECT start... i was never quite sure whether hitting Select actually did anything!

Select makes it two players. This leads me to believe that the Konami code ends at A.

Wait wait wait. Aren't you supposed to put in the code while the logo is sliding onto the screen? When you finish the code with Start, it puts the logo in place and the music will play as if you skipped the animation. THEN you can push Select again to make it 2-players. So if I'm correct, the code ends at Start, not A.

Somebody verify this for me. :|

It also worked on the contra game for gameboy Operation C. Plus Nemesis which was the Lifeforce game for gameboy.

Konami screwed with you hardcore in Gradius IV (SNES). Plug the code in normally, and your ship self-destructed. You had to substitute the shoulder buttons for the arrow buttons (in L R L R) to get it to work (Instant full power ups). There was a separate code that I don't remember for 30 lives.

*Adding this comic to my watch list, BTW*

yay!
I got to the point where I didn't need the code because contra was the only game I had for a whole summer one year.
You could use the code in other konami games but I don't remember which ones. I know it was more than just a couple. I guess "konami code" is something to look up on wikipedia.
