Doing a little experimentation with ink washes. Did these on unstretched cheap-o paper, so that's why the wrinkles. |

Spreading common knowledge
As everyone else already knows by now, The Dark Knight kicked ass. I admit to being a bit scared of Comic-con next week. Last year's con had the worst crowding to date (this was confirmed by the attendance records and the fact that they actually sold out of tickets, the first time in the con's history, I believe). This summer alone saw Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Hellboy II, and The Dark Knight all hit theaters. All of which, in this author's opinion, were good. Some better than others, sure, but all good movies nonetheless. It's going to be a friggin' madhouse at Con. P.S. I found a book at the book store (right next to the theater) called "Are you a miserable old bastard?" that's all about, well, being a miserable old bastard. I bought it so fast I left flaming tracks at the cash register. Books are fun!

We went to see Dark Knight last night at the Westside Pavilion. Mark worked on it for New Deal Studio, which bought a block of tickets. I got to watch them film the scene he worked on last December in an old aerospace facility in Downey...one of very few model shots in the movie, which also employed, of course, an army of digital media experts. It was great! Funny thing, it's almost 3 hours long, I drank too much water with my popcorn, hit the restroom at a sprint after 2 1/4 hours and almost missed the scene he worked on when I mistakenly ran back into the adjacent theater in the multiplex. Thankfully I got back just in time. It took perhaps a hundred model makers, set designers, painters, cameramen, engineers and other technicians a month to film that scene, which is 15 seconds long and wouldn't be memorable, buried in all the other incredible visual effects, if one didn't have a reason to pay attention! |

Live at The Flying Blogspot
Pub + football + Indian takeout + TIMEZONE (YAY) + movies based on comic books = just about my perfect evening. More of this, please. The Dark Knight is plenty of fun, by the way, and all posthumous credit to Heath for making an exceptional Joker. That said, I really can't bring myself to rate this interpretation up there with the glorious Tim Burton ones. (A bit more ruthless hack and slash in the editing room, and I think it might have come closer. But apparently all those car chases were not at all gratuitous and totally essential to the plot. In which case, I've just given away half the plot - THERE ARE CAR CHASES - and probably ought to have put a spoiler warning in there.) For those who prefer my points in, um, point form: 1. Tim Burton pwns all. 2. Maggie Gyllenhaal is hotter than you, where 'you' = someone who is not Maggie Gyllenhaal. H.

Dr. Horrible and other things that start with "D"
I got someone hooked on Joss Whedon yesterday, based on the strength of Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog alone. This is, I might add, a person who has traditionally turned up their nose at the whole "sci-fi/fantasy thing." Mwahahahaha! In honor of our new convert, I have changed my default userpic for a little while... which I have stolen shamelessly, without shame, from someone in another community. And you can't stop me. Because I have a PhD in horribleness. In other news, and in no small part why I've been scarce around here, is that I recently learned that while we had our little hiatus a few months ago, Daisy found this journal. So everybody say, "Hi, Daisy!" Obviously, I'll be playing closer attention to my privacy settings from now, but I have to confess that the discovery of this place make it feel less like home. It would be hard to start again somewhere else, but not impossible. I have other usernames that I reserved years ago for just such an occasion. If I pick up and leave, I'll let some of you know. As for the rest, I can't say life has been terribly good to me lately. Nothing I feel like whining about here — just the usual heartbreaks and tragedies. It gets old after a while. But the business is going well. It keeps me busy. Beyond that... I suppose the other two things that I could mention are: 1) I'm thinking about starting up a local chapter of Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School. 2) I'm starting to plan a trip to Italy in about six months. I thought I might try something different this time. Normally when I go overseas, I go alone. I thought I might like to... I don't know... organize something. A little group meet-up in Rome. Hand-pick a few of my favorite people and see if they'd like to share a cappuccino or a bottle of wine. Nothing so structured as booking a group tour. No, no. Just a casual thing, but maybe we could get a better rate on a block of hotel rooms. That second item is probably a pipe dream, but I'll put out a few feelers and see what comes of it. It all started because I was chatting with a friend of mine in China and we were up late sharing our tales of loss when she said, "If you weren't so far away, I'd buy you a cappuccino and give you a hug." Never one to turn down an offer of either of those things, I suggested we meet in the middle. The beverage made Italy the obvious choice. So we decided we'd try to meet there in six months. Of course, she gets paid in RMB, so I don't know how likely it will be, but I'll be going nonetheless. File that last item under "D" for "Departure plans." Just to stick with the theme, you know?
