I just joined LJ and I was wondering if I would find a place to fit in. As a middle school Teacher Librarian (new title, same job), I often have "issues" to discuss and no one to discuss them with, so this should be a nice, relaxing place to jump in.

question: i just returned from the ala conference. i have a lot of thoughts and ideas i'd like to share with my library director. any advice on approaching him? |

hey. i'm support staff at a library in southern louisiana, and i'm in library school @ lsu.
am i the only loser who doesn't look through donations and take things i like?
what would you do if your manager ate in the temporary facility in which your branch is housed, even though she knows you have a roach problem?
how do you feel about cataloging graphic novels? |

hi...i'm sharon, a san francisco living, oakland public library working librarian. i am currently a children's librarian and acting branch manager at a lovely carnegie library in a very diverse neighborhood. once in awhile (more often in some branches i have worked than others) i'll have an interaction with a patron that is just super unpleasant. and it's hard because i can vent a little bit here, but as a branch manager i have to be careful about that. and i can vent a little bit to friends. but i get this horrible feeling in my chest and sometimes i almost want to cry and it can just affect my mood so strongly.
this happened just moments ago with a particularly troublesome patron. in this case it was a really upsetting interaction and it made me think that it would be nice to have somewhere to just come and share and get some kind words from folks who understand. and maybe i will share in a minute, but for now, i'm gonna work on getting some members for this community!
