Because, who doesn't want their work environment coated in piss?
Hey there, new to this community, but I could have a backlog of posts.  However, here's today's....

I work in the Children's Dept. of a public library.  Today (actually 2nd day in a row that this happened) a little girl peed her pants.  Okay, accidents happen.  The adult with her, a woman who was not her mother (I heard her say the mother was upstairs in the Adult Section)  was additionally "responsible for" 3-4 other kids (if by responsible you mean, sitting at a table across the room yelling back and forth with them while they trashed the play area, with no regard to the teenager working on one of the computers or the child working with a tutor a few tables away from her).  This woman doesn't even tell us that the little girl peed her pants--she sends a few of the kids to do it.  And then proceeds to allow the little girl with urine-soaked pants to sit on various chairs, touch her pants and play with toys.  Does not take her to the bathroom at all to try to clean her up a bit (which must have been fun for the child).  'Cause in addition to all the other stuff that I need to do today--like a shitload of shelving--I got to spray down toys and chairs with bleach water.  Yay.

Seriously, though.  What the hell.  I'm feeling better and better about this being my last month of work.  Seeing so many parents/caregivers/guardians neglect their children on a regular basis is really wearing my down.

As a side note, I don't know how many times I've seen parents just lay their 2 year old down on the floor in between the stacks and change that diaper.  Seriously.  It's not like there isn't a restroom with a changing table just out in the hall.  I don't understand how it is acceptable to do something involving human feces in a public (enclosed) enviroment where other people work.  Grrr.

Thanks for the space to vent.

I feel your pain. Today's pain was a stinky toddler's nappy that required the opening of the emergency door for a good hour after they'd left. The baby change facilities are a couple of metres from the children's area.

That poor little girl - was she upset about her wet pants? I would have been at that age. :(

She couldn't have been happy. I don't know how upset she was, 'cause there was so much chaos with the other kids in this group. But, yeah...

Re: diapers--it amazes me how many parents let their toddlers walk around for a half hour or so with a dirty diaper stinking up a room where other people are trying to coexist. I don't have kids, but I asked my mom about it, and she said she would never have let that happen--especially because of diaper rash. I just don't get it.

Thanks for the empathy.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, urine is sterile . . . xD

My boss talks directly to the toddler. "Hey little guy, is that you smelling like a rose?"
Most parents get the hint. Of course, not all.

Oh God yes! I know how you feel.

We have a regular computer user who completely ignores her 3(ish) year old son. He is given no toys, no books, not even put in the children's area. He sits near her pushing his pushchair about until, out of sheer boredom, he tries to get her attention. Repeatedly yelling "Muuuuuuuuum!" as loud as he can gets the attention of everyone in the library (which is one large room) except his mother who is right next to him. Today a man had to point out to her that the kid was playing near the automatic doors, she didn't seem interested.

Had another woman in today who left a 2 year old girl wandering around the whole library (including behind the counter) unsupervised. Later the girl was definitely getting a bit smelly.

It's just such poor parenting. And you know that if anything were to happen to the kid the parents would be on at us that the library isn't safe enough.

I know!

For some people "public library" is synonymous with "free daycare." Why, oh why did you have kids?!

Where I used to work - an academic library - one of the librarians used to bring in her toddler and newborn to scream and cry and smell all day.

AND she used to change their diapers on the floor - right behind the circ desk.

My sister and cousins have just started having kids, and apparently (most?)new parents get so used to changing diapers that it doesn't seem weird to them at all to just whip off the kid's pants and diaper in front of God and everybody.

I used to wet myself a lot, and it's tremendously unpleasant. It's humid and sometimes sticky, and if you keep urine-soaked fabric next to the skin for too long, you can get ammonia burns (especially on younger, more sensitive skin). And you smell. It's not just lazy to let a kid languish in wet pants, it's inhumane. At that age, wetting oneself can just be a matter of physiology--the body hasn't gotten itself together enough--and it is likely enough to happen that if the kid isn't in diapers, you shouldn't take him or her out without a spare set of clothing. It's just cruel to leave a kid like that. And that's totally aside from how leaving the kid in those clothes ends up getting pee on stuff, which is just nasty. Makes you want to break into this idiot's house and pee on her furniture.

You might want to invest in some of that spray they use to neutralize odors and stains from pet urine.

Some businesses open to the public have strict rules regarding human feces. It is a biohazard, frankly, and your library should have a policy on it. It's a health/safety issue, and I think it might be covered in state workplace safety laws.

But when all else fails bring the biohazard to the patron, by going to their doorstep and pulling a Jim Carrey in Me, Myself, and Irene.
