Twilight Zone Mofo

Perhaps it was the 'full moon' (cue the eerie, ominous music) or perhaps it was the fact that some cranky John McCain-ish dude was off his happy meds, who knows...?

Here goes: Sir, the fact that you are passive aggressive doesn't interest me. Nor attempting to find out my name (when it is against library policy to give such info out). Nor playing Nazi cat and mouse games with me. When I told you that I would not give my name, you refused to listen and then proceeded to ironically insult me by saying that I "had a sexy voice", while your tone of voice belied the fact. When I point blank asked you if you had a question you were pleading with me to treat you humanely and pissed alternately and finally asked for the phone number of  Oshkosh library. Thanks for giving me the address, at least that was clear. Since this is a thankless profession, you didn't thank me for the info. I didn't care about that....

What I do care about is that you proceed to call me a faggot for not telling you my name, and tried to insult me further. At least I told you why I was hanging up. I was WAY TOO LENIENT! You, sir are a cretin from hell, a verifiable MOFO in the worst sense of the world and I (after I hung up on you) I warned all of my collegues about your crude, abusive ways,so that the next time you call, I will take down your number and go medieval on your ass. You apparently haven't learned lesson no. 1: which is that there is a limit to treating people like crap...if you're so clueless I will have you banned from this service and you will have to stay within your four walls for life. Quarantined is a better alternative for mofo cretins like you.

Oh, have a great day. In your own personal hell, cretinous slimeball whacko from hell.

I love that your library policy says you don't have to/ can't give out your name!

I'm glad that our library has a policy of only putting your title on "name tags", even though we get shit about it from the occasional customer. Strangely enough, it's always an old guy who complains about it, and they never quite understand my more subtle explanations. I just don't want to be blunt and explain that we do it because stalkers, etc. are pretty common in the public library biz and we care more about the safety of our employees than the "right" for customers to know our names.

Ah, I gather that immediately after he called you a name, you told him that the conversation was over and that you were hanging up. Wonderful! You were right on the money! Good for you.

The only way it would've been more 'fun' for you would have been if you were able to tell him (before he called you names) that if he didn't have a legitimate reference question, that you would end the phone call.

I applaud your library's policy of not giving out names.

Like everyone else said, that's awesome! I wish my library did that.

We're allowed to limit to just our first names, but we're required to give them something - to be accountable, to be reachable again later, whatever. I thought that was a basic tenant of customer service?

I'd be pissed if a customer service rep anywhere wouldn't give me their name. Though, I understand that lots of call centre people use fake names. that's fine - I can still call back and say 'so and so told me xyz...'.

Him calling you sexy-voiced is where he went over the line, and that's where I'd have stopped him cold.

I really want to thank everyone for responding. I should really make one thing straight and that is it's a laissez-faire policy on giving your name for the library I work at. Usually I only give my first name if someone is appreciative or wants to thank me.

This guy was definitely not.

When I said that it's "against library policy" I was trying to protect myself and realized this loser was just f*cked up. I agree, it's usually good customer service policy to do that, but if someone is really wanting to play with your head, or abuse you in any way: (i.e. call you names, get your goat, insult you): you really don't have to give your name. You can even lie (like I did, and I'm not proud of it) and say that library policy says that you don't have to give your name. It's another form of protection.

Yep, I could've handled this call differently, or not stayed on as long as I did. If you're a librarian and handle difficult patrons like the asshole I had to deal with, 1) develop a thick skin and 2) know that you can hang up when you need to, as long as you tell the person why you are doing so.

No one needs to be abused at work: in person or via phone. Just remember we serve the public, if the public decided to screw around with you, don't play their game.
