Can I call MoFo on a TV show?
Dear stupid writers from the once enjoyable show "Scrubs,"

I work very, very, VERY hard to get my residents, fellows, and doctors NOT to use Google for medical information. I tell them about the wonderful free site PubMed, and introduce them to the databases that we pay oodles of money for to search for medical information. Google is very useful in many regards but NOT FOR MEDICAL INFORMATION!! Do you not have medical advisors on this show? Did they not learn about the actual medical databases from their friendly neighborhood medical librarian? Or did I miss something and is Google now a sponsor of "Scrubs"?

Not so sincerly,

The Cranky Medical Librarian who quit watching "ER" when they screwed up Dr. Green's diagnosis and treatment and is about to quit watching "Scrubs"

it's just a TV show...
I have a girlfriend, and several friends who all work in the Medical field..
I can't tell you what a nightmare it is to watch "Scrubs" or "House" with
these people, without hearing about all the innacuracies..
if It was a documentary i would see your point, but it's a comedy
TV series.
I don't imagine that shows with Police Officers,Military Personell,Chefs,
Sanitation Workers,Strippers or Rodeo Clowns all have accuracy that
the people who do those jobs would like..
Scrubs is just a TV show..they make errors, but no one expect the show
to have any accuracy.
In some ways I would expect ER or a serious show to have some accuracy,
but scrubs is just a Comedy show..no one takes this stuff seriously.

take a deep breath..and give the writers and producers a break.
And shouldn't you be reading anyway.

*I hope you realize that this reply was written tongue in cheek. I don't mean to diminish your point or piss you off. I apologise if I have done either. Just after years of living and working in the Medical field and hearing these complaints I have had to snap, but not seriously*

I'm with OP. Using google for medical info will get you herbalife and snake oil to cure your cancer.

It's the kind of thing that makes a librarian say "motherfucker!", ya know?

Me too. I work in a med school and it's a neverending battle trying to wean these people (med students and doctors alike) off Google.

ER namechecked MEDLINE once though :)

C'mon, the people on Scrubs are doctors the way Dr Pepper is a doctor. They are to medicine what Phoenix Wright and Apollo Just-ass are to Law. It isn't supa cereal, as the kids are saying. It kind-of peeves me when the creators of serious works get things wrong, but Scrubs has a musical episode with a song and dance number about poop.

Fo'shizzle.

Scrubs does have medical advisors, btw. Also, Google Scholar searches PubMed (amongst others). It's not so much that Google is bad, it's that Google is bad if it's the single source of information for ANY subject.

I know - I've used Google Scholar. But to give the impression that you can put in "purple pee" and get a diagnosis is what really aggrivated me.

Kittengirly, where do you work? I used to work at a medical library on Pitt's campus when I was an undergrad there.

I work at the "rival" hospital in Bloomfield. But I did my graduate work at Pitt, so I know where you're talking about. :)

It's gankable, but for the life of me, I can't remember who originally made the icon.

Apparently there ARE patrons that don't know Google. I haven't gotten one myself, but I've heard stories, and showing such patrons Google seems like the monolith scene from 2001, from what I understand.
