Epic levels of frustration
My co-workers and I are absolutely frustrated with the head of one of our campus libraries.  This Director doesn't like our main jobber and prefers to order from aLibris.  Which is fine, however, they are either ordering whatever is the cheapest copy available, or just blindly accepting every order unconditionally.  We've had items coming to us that have pages falling out as well as needing serious spine repairs.  Let's not even go into the ink marks and highlighting.  I even had one paperback that was literally in 2 separate pieces!

While it's bad enough to have to catalog and process something that needs repairs before it even makes it to the shelf for patron use, the last straw was a book that was moldy.  It absolutely reeked!  There were lovely green rosette splotches inside where it was growing.  We've complained about the poor condition of the books they were buying and accepting before, but it's gotten us nowhere.

What really took the cake was when they sent it back to us complaining of the mold!  I sent it back with a terse note explaining that our department was not able to accept or reject any books they ordered and that they should take it up with the head of their library who ordered it (and accepted it).

I should have sent the damn thing back to them in a ziplock bag with rubber gloves and a mask taped to it.  Mofo.

We tried at our library a very short trial of ordering OP replacement books with them, with the understanding that they were going to be in "not new" condition, but with lengthly talks with them as to what conditions were and were not acceptable.

Needless to say, our experience with them was similar to ours - the books we were getting were worse then the ones we couldn't salvage - and they would often say they couldn't take them back because of their condition!

Yeah...luckily we quickly decided to STOP dealing with them.

aLibris is perfectly willing to take them back, but the one who is checking it in (or the Director) has to be the one to do it since they placed the order. Why the hell they won't is beyond me.

They have a stunning, new facility that has tons of room to expand and it's being filled up with books that have crumbling pages, mold, and other condition problems. Gah.
