I couldn't find anything on Snopes (http://www.snopes.com/) or AskMetafilter (http://ask.metafilter.com/) either to support or discredit it. Also, it seems to be covered in European media (in Dutch, French, and German at least) as well as American, so it sounds legit. Try searching with the inventor's name; I got more hits that way.
