Planned Parenthood is tax exempt, correct? I had to share this with someone...

I found on the Drudge report they were selling THESE t-shirts. Thing is, that link I provided is cached from google.com. They CHANGED the original link(posted on Drudge report), before to many people could see the item in question.

Shady.

Who the hell would buy/wear a t-shirt like that?

I know some people in CampusNOW that might...

They protested an article in the school paper about abortion.

One picketer was holding a sign that said "I'm proud of my 4 abortions"

So she's proud that she was so irresponsible that she had 4 unintended pregnancies? Doesn't she realize she'll probably wind up infertile and not be able to have any babies at all in the future?

There's a difference between pro-choice and pro-abortion... Planned Parenthood provides info on contraceptives, etc... that shirt just sucks.

I think if someone has that many abortions they really should not be allowed any more.. that's one of my few pro life feelings. Pro choice doesn't mean pro-abortion.

All sorts of organizations can be non-profit. I think that you have to have a constitution or charter showing you are providing some service to the public and not have any money left as profit come tax time. However, I am not up on all the details of being tax-exempt.

What's shady about it? Lsat I checked, the requirements to qualify for non-profit status did not list "Complete lack of humor."

They obviously removed the shirt due to the negative PR it will generate. PP has already been hit pretty hard since the conservative Christian views found a way into the Whitehouse, this shirt was a pretty poor idea for a joke on the part of the PP staffers that did this.

Someone probably realized what a stupid idea it was to sell such a tasteless item. They are an organization that depends on the goodwill of its donors. Someone higher up the chain probbaly looked at their online store and wondered "Who the hell authorized that? Get it off there now."

AND they are a huge lobbying group...that sells shirts like this at a profit...while being tax-exempt.

They are a non-profit group. They can sell things at greater-than-cost, it's where that extra money goes that's important to maintaining their status. They don't have to balance to zero at the end of every budget cycle, they're allowed to maintain a reserve of operating capital.

What does that have to do with them being a tax-exempt non-profit? I think the shirt's in pretty poor taste, but regardless of my opinion and of their status, they have the right to both sell the shirt and to pull the link when they realized they were getting ready to get embarassed.

And if your issue is with the fact that they're selling something, non-profits do have to make money, you know, to pay rent and employees and operating costs, and selling t-shirts, posters, books, etc. is a very common way for them to do it. It is very, very rare that a non-prof can survive on donations alone.

I'd wear a shirt like that. Of course I'm a guy, but I do support women's rights. And I do have shirts that are worse than that that I tend to wear. But I really don't understand how this is at all shady, or has anything to do with being tax exempt. I think it's a nice shirt. I'm actually considering getting it.

Personally I think it is a good idea to let people know you have had an abortion. No right is easier to take away then a right politicians think nobody utilizes. The only reason drugs were able to be made illegal is drug users were cast as Mexicans and blacks, and the whites who used drugs were unwilling to stand up in mass and say that they use drugs and didn't want to see them made illegal. Same with prohibition, alcohol was cast as only being used by violent antisocial types, and regular people who drank didn't want to stand up and say, "I drink, and I am not violent or antisocial". If the Christians manage to make it so taboo to admit you have had an abortion then they have won, because the politicains will only see the people who are against abortion and won't see all of the millions of people who have had abortions and want to make sure women in the future have that option.

Personally, I have two problems with that shirt. First, it trivializes something that is, for most women who undergo it, the single most agonizing decision of their lives.

Second, well, it's just tacky. It doesn't make the slightest attempt at convincing, it's just there to piss people off. It's the raging left wing feminist equivalent of a "God, Guns and Guts Made America Great!" shirt.

Do they have a right to sell it? Absolutely. Do women have a right to wear it? Certainly. Do I have a right to dismiss anyone wearing one as about as open to logical discourse as a herring? Completely.
