From the always brilliant Mike Luckovich.

Can I just say, I always considered Jerry Falwell the most embarrasing person from my adopted state until this week. I do believe Pat Robertson is the new winner! ::slow clap:: ::sobs::

Jeez, that didn't take long.
A federal panel voted today to close historic Fort Monroe in Virginia and move more than 2,000 jobs to the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland from New Jersey as part of the Pentagon's plan to restructure hundreds of U.S. military bases and facilities across the country in an effort to save billions of dollars. The nine-member Base Closure and Realignment Commission also voted to shut major Army bases in Georgia and Michigan and to close nearly 400 Army Reserve and National Guard facilities in dozens of states.

[...] Most of the Army's proposals were quickly approved. Still to be decided is the fate of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Northwest Washington, which the Pentagon wants to close, and whether Arlington and Alexandria will lose almost 23,000 defense workers housed in leased office space.

The commission did overrule the Pentagon on two of its biggest requests, however. It voted to keep open the Portsmouth shipyard at Kittery, Maine, and the submarine base in New London, Conn., despite the recommendations to shut the facilities. It also spared an army depot in Texas.

Constant updates are being posted on Yahoo News. I'm holding out hope for Walter Reed and Arlington, but just barely.

++ Anti-War Protestors Cheer Salt Lake City Mayor. BTW, did you know the mayor of SLC is a flaming liberal?
But the dispute is just the latest example of Anderson's brash style during his seven years at the helm of this city. He has criticized state lawmakers for stringent alcohol laws and for banning same-sex marriages. He tussled with leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over the right to free speech on a church-owned plaza that was once a public street. Anderson, 53, has poked at Bush before, too, chiding the president for opting out of the Kyoto treaty to reduce greenhouses gases.

In Utah, where some Democrats are jokingly referred to as moderate Republicans, Anderson's mere presence makes some wonder how he could even get elected.

"Anyone who asks that question doesn't understand Salt Lake City," said Democrat county council member Joe Hatch. "The city hasn't elected a conservative since the 1970s."

I love it. Maybe Utah doesn't completely suck after all!

Scariest.Book.Ever.
Would you let your child read blatantly liberal stories with titles such as "King & King," "No, George, No," or "It's Just a Plant"? Unless you live in Haight-Ashbury or write for the New York Times, probably not. But with the nation’s libraries and classrooms filled with overtly liberal children’s books advocating everything from gay marriage to marijuana use, kids everywhere are being deluged with left-wing propaganda.

"Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed" is the book conservative parents have been seeking. This illustrated book — the first in the "Help! Mom!" series from Kids Ahead — is perfect for parents who seek to share their traditional values with their children, as well as adults who wish to give a humorous gift to a friend.

Hailed as "the answer to a baseball mom's prayers" by talk radio host Melanie Morgan, "Liberals Under My Bed" has already been the subject of coverage in The Wall Street Journal and Harper’s magazine. Written by a self-proclaimed "Security Mom for Bush" and featuring hilarious full-color illustrations by a Reuben Award winning artist, it is certain to be one of the most talked about children's books of the year.

++ Oh, and now Robertson is denying he said "assassination". Motherfucker, we know what you said! Let's recap:
You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war. And I don't think any oil shipments will stop. But this man is a terrific danger and the United ... This is in our sphere of influence, so we can't let this happen. We have the Monroe Doctrine, we have other doctrines that we have announced. And without question, this is a dangerous enemy to our south, controlling a huge pool of oil, that could hurt us very badly. We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with.

The part about "I THINK WE OUGHT TO GO AHEAD AND DO IT"? makes it a wee bit hard to deny, ya know?

++ Wait wait: "I said our special forces could take him out. Take him out could be a number of things including kidnapping"!!!

++ If ABC Family "strongly rejects" the statements of Pat Robertson, then why are there "no plans to drop 700 Club" from their programming line-up? Make you you let ABC Family know you disagree with this.

Bush rebuts calls for U.S. to pull out of Iraq, and basically says "Fuck Cindy Sheehan".

Also, the Pentagon just ordered 1,500 more troops to Iraq, joining the 138,000 troops already there. The additional troops are supposed to help keep the calm during the October referendum on the new constitution... but I can't see how 1,500 troops are really gonna help if the country breaks out into CIVIL WAR like some Sunni Muslims are predicting. I don't see what we're doing here - it's like, imagine if the Mall of America made this huge deal about needing to send in mall cops, NOW NOW NOW!, but then instead of hiring the 50 or so rent-a-cops neccesary to protect the mall, they only hired 1 guy 3 days a week. How do you expect anything to get protected if you don't have the tools and manpower neccesary? Gah, I suck at analogies, but you know what I'm trying to say.

If you look at the US casuality numbers, the numbers always go up dramatically when there's an election or some big event like this. I'm scared October is going to be a bloodbath for American troops & Iraqi civilians.

::sighs::

Oh, and oil hit $67.40 a barrel today. Good times!

Yeah, yeah, I realize this is my 8th post today and you're incredibly sick of me, but I had to mention this real quick.
The American Legion, which has 2.7 million members, has declared war on antiwar protestors, and the media could be next. Speaking at its national convention in Honolulu, the group's national commander called for an end to all “public protests” and “media events” against the war, even though they are protected by the Bill of Rights.

"The American Legion will stand against anyone and any group that would demoralize our troops, or worse, endanger their lives by encouraging terrorists to continue their cowardly attacks against freedom-loving peoples," Thomas Cadmus, national commander, told delegates at the group's national convention in Honolulu.

The delegates vowed to use whatever means necessary to "ensure the united backing of the American people to support our troops and the global war on terrorism."

WHAT THE FUCK.

Here's a fun flashback from Whiskey Bar: Click to read )

These motherfuckers have an awfully short memory, don't they.

I'd also like to point out, this group (which my Navy-Veteran grandfather gives about $5,000 a year to) has a history of supporting fascism, at least back in 1923. Nice.
