Intro post/FAQ
Hi, and welcome to [info]lgbtfest, a fest for fanfic that focuses on the experience of being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. This fest is multi-fandom and open to stories about any characters you want to write as LGBT, whether they're canonically LGBT or not.

FAQ

We're looking for stories that deal with issues like:

Coming out (coming out for the first time, or in a hostile environment, or to a heterosexual partner, or negotiating how open to be with various people and in various social worlds).

Figuring out sexual orientation and gender identity (deciding you're LGBT, making a gender transition, moving between labels, dealing with other people's labels that don't necessarily fit you.)

Dealing with prejudice (job discrimination, hostility from family or friends, legal problems, violence, and what characters can or can't do about them.)

Being part of an LGBT community (gay bars, student groups, social groups, activist groups, LGBT neighborhoods, networks within the military or a profession, circles of friends, etc.)

LGBT history and politics in fictional worlds (What real-life history have characters lived through? Who might they see as role models? What's the LGBT history of the future? What are LGBT politics like in the wizarding world or on alien planets?)

And there are plenty of other things you could write about -- we're looking for a wide variety of prompts to give people plenty of choices.

We're not looking for:

PWP smut. Stories can be any rating, and can include or be about sex, but if there's no point to your story other than "these characters having sex is very hot," this isn't the place for it.

Stories that are about straight non-transgender people. If you think your main characters are straight and not transgender, this isn't the place for your story.

ETA: Because of LJ's policies about depictions of underage sex, we also ask that stories not include sex involving pre-adolescent characters, and not include explicit (NC-17) sex involving characters under 18.

What's wrong with slash that doesn't focus on LGBT issues?

Nothing! We like lots of different kinds of slash. We like fluffy romance where there are no hard problems. We like pure smut. We like stories where the characters' sexual orientation is totally irrelevant to the plot. We like stories set in worlds where no one cares about the gender of people's partners. We like crack!fic where aliens make everybody have sex.

We just also like stories about what it's like to be an LGBT wizard, or mutant, or space pilot, and that's what we want to see for this challenge.

Can I write gen?

Absolutely. Or slash, or femslash, or polyfic, or het in which at least one partner is LGBT and that's a central issue in the story.

What about characters who wouldn't use these labels (for instance, characters in historical/alien settings)?

You can certainly write about characters who wouldn't describe themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (for instance, because their culture doesn't have those terms available). If your main character is attracted to people of the same gender, or doesn't identify with the gender they were assigned at birth, and faces some of the issues above, you're fine. If none of these issues are relevant to your main characters at all, this probably isn't the place for your story.

Schedule

Prompt submission: February 27 through March 7
Prompt claiming: March 8 through March 15
Posting begins: April 10
Posting ends: May 10

When you claim a prompt, you'll also give us your top three choices of posting dates. You'll be assigned a specific date on which to post your story, to spread the stories out throughout the month.

Please feel free to pimp the fest around; we'd like to see a lot of fandoms represented here!

Please don't submit your prompts to this post; submit them here, instead.

I have a query. I find the idea intriguing and there are various characters in my fandom (Blakes 7) who would work quite well with this.

But I am not LGBT and would not wish to offend through ignorance. Could you possibly put up a Beta readers post in which people who feel qualified to judge whether a story reflects the LGBT experience properly volunteer to read stories to point out anything which is wrong or ignorant or offensive?

Yes, we can definitely put up a post for people who are looking for beta readers (or for pointers toward resources for learning more about various issues/historical events.)

New stories only for the actual fest, yep, but we've talked about it this evening, and we're thinking we'll put up a post where people can link/rec existing stories in comments. We'll probably do that after prompt claiming is over, to give people something to read while everyone's writing. :-)

Is RPF allowed? What about other fannishly controversial themes (incest, underage sex, cross-generational sex)?

RPF and fannishly controversial themes in general are fine; we'll ask people to use warnings as appropriate. I'll get back to you about underage sex as soon as possible -- I want to talk to the other mod first about what our policy there is going to be.

Okay, we've talked about the underage sex issue, and because of LJ's policies about depictions of underage sex, we're going to ask that stories not involve sex including pre-adolescent children, and that stories not involve explicit (NC-17) sex including people under 18.

Oh, man, I've had a coming out fic in my head for months that's been waiting to be written. Maybe this is the kick in the pants I need to get it done. How awesome of you!

RPS is okay, yes? I always like to check as some challenges like to leave it out.

This... is awesome. I really look forward to reading the fic, and hopefully writing some as well!

One question, though; what about original fic? I have a number of projects going on with many characters who identify as some variety of LGBTQ or another, much of which is available online in one form or another (for example, one is backstory for an RPG that I run, and others I post excerpts of on a filter on my LJ). Obviously this doesn't qualify as "fanfic," so would writing with my characters from these projects be acceptable?

We're going with fanfic only for the fest -- original characters are fine, but not entirely original fic (unless it falls under the handwavy umbrella of "historical RPF.") Sorry! I hope you can still find something you'll enjoy writing, or at least have fun reading!

Not unless the character is lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. If s/he is a non-transgender straight person, that's outside the scope of the fest.

Couple of quick questions:

What about intersex characters? Do they fall under the "trans" umbrella?

What about Weird Alien Stuff? *g* Stargate SG-1 has the possibility of symbiote characters who identify as a different gender from the human bodies they're currently inhabiting (for example, Osiris identifies as male, even when using a female host). Would it be legitimate to explore that as transgender?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]penknife
2008-02-28 07:51 pm UTC (link)
Intersex characters are included, yes. For Weird Alien Stuff, use your own judgment about whether it addresses transgender issues, or at least what we'd perceive as transgender issues, even if the alien wouldn't use that term. If the alien is trying to figure out their own gender identity or sexual orientation, or has to deal with people's reactions to their gender identity not matching their biological sex, you're probably good.

Question: do you have to write off of a prompt? What if you have a good idea that works and you want to write it? (I already have some ideas for the Doctor from Doctor Who exploring his sexual orienation and his gender identity.)

Yes, you do, but if you already have an idea you want to write, please leave it as a prompt! You can claim your own prompts, and that way it may inspire someone else as well.

What about gender issues in general?

The scope of trans is more than just MtF or FtM. What about a character that's wanting to get in touch with their opposite gender side? What about a genderfluid character? A character with more than one gender? A character trying out different genders to explore those sides of their psyche? What about exploring the genders of "butch" and "femme"?

You said no crossdressing, but that leaves out a whole side of trans-gender (as opposed to transgender) experience.

Prompts about being genderfluid, or having more than one gender, or trying out different genders are all fine. Stories about lesbian/gay/bisexual people exploring "butch" and "femme" are totally within the scope of this ficathon (and I'd love to see someone write about that!)

Let me get back to you as soon as possible about your other questions -- I want to talk with the other mod about them, and she is away from her computer until sometime this evening.

Probably should have asked these before I started writing prompts, but now that I've started, my mind is teeming with ideas, so, in order from least obnoxious to most obnoxious (:P) :

1. I put in some prompts for canonically eunuch/neutered characters, assuming that was close enough to count as transgender. It is, right?

2. On that note, does asexuality count?

3. If the focus of the prompt is GLBT issues and characters, does the main character have to be explicitly GBLT? (For example, can a story about coming out to a straight spouse be from the spouse's POV? Does the story of Hermione barging into to Hogwarts' GSA group in her trademark SPEW style, and being taught the error of her ways, only count if you specify that she likes girls? I can see how you wouldn't want stories about straight peoples' experiences taking over the fest, but they could be such fun stories!)

4. Do "woke up straight"/"woke up gay"/genderswap stories that address GLBT identity issues count as having GLBT main characters? Do they they at least count if the characters were GLBT *before* the deus ex machina? Or would you rather stay far away from their tendency to turn heteronormative or formulaic when carelessly done?

If the focus of the prompt is GLBT issues and characters, does the main character have to be explicitly GBLT?

Seconding the question -- I was thinking it could be interesting to do a Stargate SG-1 prompt about Cassandra Fraiser's experiences as the adoptive child of lesbian parents (canon looks amazingly close to "Cassie Has Two Mommies" at times). Would that be a problem if Cassie herself isn't specified as GLBT?

Question: I see that the prompt is focussed on the problematic/political/social issue of LGBT. Can we submit a story in which the characters are LGBT but where it is normal? (i.e. a character dealing with self to ask out for a date, or two others breaking up, or two talking about their bisexuality?)

You can certainly write about positive rather than problematic aspects of being LGBT. However, it should matter to your story that the characters are LGBT. If you're just writing a straight-up relationship story, where nothing would be different if this were a heterosexual couple, it's probably not for this fest.

If your point is "same-sex relationships are a lot like heterosexual relationships," I think that's fine if you explicitly raise that question in the prompt or your story ("Hermione tries to figure out what it'll be like dating women, and discovers it's a lot like dating men.")

Question...Other than the popular fandoms I'm in, I'm in a very tiny one - the book has only sold a few hundred copies, but there is a official fan group, the author started it, as well as an official PRG - there are two characters I'd like to write about, one a canon character, one my RPG character - is that ok?
