tutorial #4; sara sidle

I've had a couple people ask me about my colouring, and unspell suggested I do a tutorial, so I did one for one of the icons from my last batch. :)

to in PS7. Uses curves and some selective colouring so sorry, but it's not entirely translatable. :(

A large chunk of the main settings are borrowed from this tutorial by nightcomes, so a shout out to her for that. ^_^b Also, I'm very futzy when I make icons, which you will learn shortly.

First we take this cap (courtesy of followtheroad @ csi-caps.com) and crop how you want.
Duplicate your base twice and set both to screen at 100% opacity.

Now create a new curves adjustment layer.
I like to separate the RGB and the other colours because it gives you
more flexibility when playing with opacities to get the final effect you want.
So, first layer: RGB: first point: I:255 O:231
second point: I:241 O:222
third point: I:162 O:179
fourth point: I:117 O:147
fifth point: I:62 O:53
sixth point: I:29 O:0
Set to soft light, opacity 68%

Second new adjustment layer
RED: first point: I:124 O:152
second point: I:93 O:14
GREEN: first point: I:209 O:255
second point: I:124 O:162
third point: I:99 O:129
BLUE: first point: I:175 O:209
second point: I:94 O:165
third point: I:55 O:117
fourth point: I:8 O:3
Also set to soft light, opacity 17%

Create a new colour balance adjustment layer:
midtones: C: +13, opacity 100%
>

Create a new colour fill layer and fill it with #2A6995, set it to soft light, opacity 65%.
Now this layer is a good one to play with, ie: if your image has more blue lower the opacity more,
if it has more red you can leave it at a higher opacity.

Make a selective colour adjustment layer. Leave this one at 100% opacity:
REDS: C:-100
M:0
Y:+100
YELLOWS: C:-21
M:0
Y:-100
NEUTRALS: C:+4
M:-7
Y:+8

Make a new hue/saturation layer: saturation +23, leave the opacity at 100%

Now for the last major layer, make a second selective colour adjustment layer, 100% opacity:
NEUTRALS: C:+15
Y:-19

You can obviously leave it like this at this point, but here
are a couple of little things that I pretty much always do,
it's in the .psd file I use and I never touch it.
It just softens the icon without losing the colour saturation.

Paste this texture from wash_when_dirty twice, set the first layer to soft light at 20% opacity
and set the second layer to multiply at 16% opacity.

I also add some sort of dusty textures (like from peoplemachines) set to screen. For example add
at 53% opacity, at 100% opacity, and (from wash_when_dirty) at 13% opacity.

Now, I have to say that I love the dusty/scratchy textures except when they're
really rough and icky and cover the person's face, because that's really not necessary.
So play around with opacities and placement, and remember: moderation people! :D

This is really a tutorial that lets you see that you're not bound to
certain steps that you are given, you're allowed to play around! Play with layers,
fiddle with opacities, add something that wasn't mentioned anywhere in the
original tutorial. I mean, if I'd followed the steps verbatim and left everything the
way it was with the images I was working with, I would have gotten this:

Hmmmm...NOT QUITE THE SAME IS IT? UM NO NOT RLY. :p

Here are some other icons made with similar settings so you can see the variety of cap that this tutorial will work with. :)

Wow, I usually don't have icons out this soon after an episode airs, and I also like how they turned out. Weird. Anyhoo, a little bit of a lot of people this time and a couple of other randoms. Also, may I just say that I'm glad that Crackhead Mendelsohn's idea of Sofia as Grissom's "lurve interest" didn't pan out, because otherwise I wouldn't have enjoyed her character in this ep as much as I did. ^_^b

a grissom/sara mood theme for el-to-the-jay

So, you guys get something good out my aggravating week that I spent without internet, which was when I started this.

A Grissom/Sara mood theme! PWNED! Yeah, I don't really know what's going on most of the time. ANYHOO, here:

Installation:

1. Download the file above, and please upload the images to your own server. I use photobucket.com and it has served me quite well. :)

2. In your downloaded .zip file there should be a file called "copypaste_g-s mood theme.txt". Open that sucker up.

3. Now, the fidgety part. In each line where it says http://yourserver.com/whatever, going in alphabetical order, replace it with the URL of wherever you uploaded the images to. You should end up with something that looks like this:

moodtheme_setpic 280920 90 http://yourserver.com/accomplished 100 50

I've written everything up so that in the copypaste file, all you have to do is input the six digit code that the admin_console generates for you (the 280920) and your link to the corresponding image. Everything else stays the same. :)

4. Now, go to LJ's Admin Console and enter the following:

moodtheme_create "almost_october's grissom/sara mood theme" "grissom/sara mood theme"

5. First of all, remember to keep this window open, it makes things easier later. Click 'execute' and you will be given the six digit code I mentioned above. Copy down the code # and go back to the "copypaste_mood theme.txt" file. Replace the six digit number in that file with the one that you were given by the admin console. If you have everything open in Microsoft Word, the 'edit' > 'find' > 'replace' option is very handy here.

6. Now that you've done all that, copy everything (and if you're in Notepad make sure that 'word wrap' is turned off).

7. Go back to your Admin Console and paste everything into the box that's there. Click 'execute'. Do a quick scroll through the page of code that it gives you to make sure there aren't any errors (it'll tell you did wrong if there are).

8. So now that you've gone through all of that, to set the mood theme for your journal go to modify journal and under the pull-down menu for 'mood icons' select "almost_october's grissom/sara mood theme". Then just click 'save changes' and you're done!

LJ also has a FAQ page for custom mood themes that explains things in more detail, so you can poke around over there, and you can always let me know if you have any questions. :)

And I should also note that you don't have to have a paid account to use a custom mood theme. You can get a sponsored account and be able to have one as well, you just have to put up with a few ads and the like.
